short version: there’s a fascinating article about a growing trend among universities of “outsourcing” their e-mail to either microsoft or google instead of using their own proprietary systems for e-mail. long version here.

commentary: although it begins by discussing e-mail specifically, the article goes on to address the role of technology on campuses and even how to use other features available from M$ and google for collaborative work, such as peer-editing in an intranet, perhaps like wikipedia, for a class.

Intriguing. I wonder if my alma mater is jumping at that - for a small state-funded campus, it was pretty tech-savvy.

I think it's smart to use the best option that's written on a public platform.  I've worked with Standford Universities email system and found that it was difficult and unweildy.

infernal: perhaps you should get in touch with 'em?

u-i: well, a core sticking point i believe is one of privacy--the article dwells on that subject for a while, privacy of students' schoolwork, etc. as i don't know much about it myself, i can't speak knowledgeably about that matter but if the school bears liability if the students' work is inadvertently accessed, i can easily see why this isn't already the case on every campus across the nation, you know?

I think that companies like Google and Yahoo and MS and others, who hold information for users in trust (much like a bank), should have their databases of private information encrypted.

Actually, any company that keeps personal information should use strong encryption in order to protect it, as well as anti intrusion measures.

i agree, actually. the question to me however is one of accountability, though. if the universities are liable and there's a problem...
