the giants got humiliated by an underdog yesterday. the vikes played truly inspired defense, turned 4 interceptions into 28 points, and the giants looked like they didn't care. dropped passes everywhere. for the first time ever in the time i've been a giants fan, i turned off the game before it was over (after the 4th pick)--although i suppose one could argue with no small justice that game was over well before that point. suffice it to say that i was disgusted.

i wonder in part if eli's bad day was somehow related to elder brother peyton's presence in the stands, to be honest. i've always had a sense that for as much as the sports media compares eli to peyton, it's nothing compared to how much eli does himself.

holy crap but philly impressed the hell out of me! defensive coordinator jim johnson did the rest of the league a huge favor--i think john madden got it exactly right, that there is now a blueprint for the rest of the league re: how to stop new england. i'm particularly impressed that their secondary took away randy moss while ringing up a few sacks on brady.

OK, granted, they still lost the game, but c'mon: even the colts lost by more than 3. if you ask me, the eagles proved that they can be dangerous. and i honestly wonder how well the game would have gone if mcnabb wasn't on the bench for this game, or if the game wasn't a road game for philly...

what game surprised you the most this week?

no one will watch football with me.
    i don't have a favorite team...but i think it's fun to watch.
the only game i've seen this week is the first quarter of the seahawks, rams game.
i don't even know the final score.

    hey Ed:
I coulda written your post as I had the same experience as you....ugh, the giants were sorrier than sorry. Sorry! The Eagles did give it a good show and I am a little tired this morning for having watched the whole thing, it was exciting and I was impressed with many things...first of all, Feely, came into the game with a little frightened look in his eyes that made me nervous. That he settled into the routine that he did, was fun to watch.

All Villanova alum could be proud last night as Westbrook was the man, once again! Matter of fact, all of those receivers had a helluva game and Feely was able to mix it up quite a bit.

I think Mcnabb is on the slow boat out to be honest. He just doesn't get out there with his shoulders back like he used to. I think he is burnt out on the NFL and we will see him less and less. That's just me. He has subtly changed from playing to win, to playing to not lose, big difference.

ok, gotta get on with things, talk soon, go green! mamie

mamie: i didn't see the entire game--i only came in after halftime but holy crap, did the birds look good!

i haven't seen a lot of mcnabb this season, mamie, but i just can't believe he's done, you know? and feeley--damn! what a game he had, huh?

    and yeah. no body.
my first football game i ever watched was the huskies at the rose bowl after the rose parade on new years 1989 i THINK. can't remember for sure.....and my dad came and turned it off.
and i hadn't even figured out what was going on yet. *laughing*.......my ex's family are RABID broncos fans...they taught me the rules and stuff.....but my family thinks sports on tv is dumb. my dad used to play basketball and football, but won't watch it on TV. hmmmph. i think it's fun.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 26, 2007....
all i'm gonna say is that considering denver's history of having been taught to use illegal blocks, that says something about your ex's family, if you ask me. :D

Ah, so you saw that game too. I wanted the Eagles to win, and I wanted them to win so badly. Not because I'm from South Philly and the inclination to root for them is in my DNA. But because I hate the Patriots. I really, really hate the Patriots. Tom Brady is a smug little pretty boy and I want to see his face buried in the turf. As for McNabb, I do hope he's on his way out. He's a hack who's afraid of getting hit. We shoulda kept Garcia.

Sorry about the Giants, Ed. I didn't see the game, but from the looks of it that game against the Vikings was no picnic.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 26, 2007....
harried: i only started from the 3rd--honestly, i expected the birds to become an oily smear on the turf of foxboro, so when i saw that it was close, well...!

yeah, look at the season garcia's having in tampa bay! but jeez, feeley wasn't exactly having a bad game, now was he?

    damned smurfs!

you might be right about eli being intimidated by payton being there silver. then again, payton totally blew it a couple weeks against the chargers. 6 interceptions? what's up with that?!?!?!?
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 26, 2007....
trav: well, peyton's been in the league long enough not to be freaked out like that, esp considering he's the big brother. and honestly, indy still came out of SD w/ a win, right?

see, that's the quality that peyton has that i keep hoping to see in eli: the ability to overcome problems and still win. he hasn't really done that yet--he got closest in the season opener against dallas in texas stadium.

  • travelr712 said on Nov 26, 2007....
silver - no, they lost by 2. but i agree with you about payton, he's always a come back quarterback. he just couldn't come back far enough that game.

I couldn't believe the Chiefs lost to the Raiders.  That was really the only game I followed this week.   I think Herm Edwards should start job hunting.

Hey gang...I was extremely proud of my birds last night!!! Everyone predicted a huge point spread, so the 3 point difference was incredible. It was an exciting game and they showed up for it! Feeley was fab. As much as I love McNabb, I think he's on his way out. Andy Reid saw some great potential in Kevin Kolb and brought him in, I think, to transition him into that position. And of course, my fave, Brian Westbrook, did make 'Nova alum, and us all, very proud! Thanks for the great post, ed! I love football, and my Eagles!!!

I was on an outing with some friends, so I missed most of yesterday's games.  I did get to watch some of the Eagles and the Patriots, though.

How about Monday Night Football?  3-0 Steelers over the Dolphins?  Dayum!  That field was a mess!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 27, 2007....
trav: holy crap, indy dropped a game to SD?! but still 2 points, man--at least peyton can keep it competitive!

CW: i saw that and was horrified! what the hell is going on in KC?!

wm: ah, you're a 'novan, huh? :> me, i think that we'll see about mcnabb next week, won't we? who do the birds play next? i know reid said mcnabb's starting. ?

eilan: the half of the philly/new england game that i did see was incredible. i'm shocked that pittsburgh scored one lousy FG in the entire game against miami, though!

  • wantingmore said on Nov 27, 2007....
hey ed...the Eagles play Seattle on Sunday at Philly. No...not a 'novan, but a Westbrook fan all the way!!! I'm glad McNabb's starting. I'd love for him to remain as starting QB...he's always been so good in and out of the pocket and could always really move. It's good to know we have Feeley in the wings, though!

Reid: If Healthy, McNabb's The Starter
  • CreativeWoman said on Nov 27, 2007....
    Ed,
The Chiefs have lost something like four straight games at home.  They have lost a couple of key players to injuries.  I think they should do better than that at home though.  I'm no expert, but I were Herm Edwards I would be polishing ye ol' resume.  Those kinds of rumblings are starting to be heard around here.

Ed: Frankly, the whole city was wailing at the idea of the Eagles and the Patriots. But I'm glad to see that the birds almost pulled it off. We were all expecting the Patties to run us over, but HA!

wanting: I read Angelo Cataldi's column in the Metro today, and I'm glad her agrees that Feeley should start against the Seahawks next week. McNabb's glory days are over, he's far past his prime, and both McNabb and Reid know it. It's good for a coach to have faith in his mainstay quarterback, but it's starting to affect the team in a negative light. It's time for Nabby to go.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 27, 2007....
wm: ah, OK. :> and yeah, feeley really acquitted himself well, didn't he?

CW: yeah, KC's certainly been inconsistent...like the old commercial says, maybe instead of the chiefs, they're the chefs these days? :D

harried: hey, mcnabb's arm and legs got you guys to a super bowl. i completely agree w/ the idea that you don't lose your job due to injury, myself. i think the guy's still got some gas in his tank. i say decide when you see how he performs against seattle.

    ed
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Nov 28, 2007....
Dude, we cut through the NFC like butter. It's not that hard. Besides, that was a few years ago. But I would like to see how he fares against Seattle.
  • wantingmore said on Nov 28, 2007....
Yeah...me too harried! I do wanna believe that McNabb still has some gas left in his tank (I like that analogy, ed!), but I think that he's just not that consistent anymore and when he gets hurt, which happens a lot, it's a real crap shoot.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 28, 2007....
harried: i think the man's still got some football in him. of course, i'm kinda hoping you guys drop that game so that the giants can strengthen their claim to a wild card slot... :>

mamie: hey, you never know w/ mcnabb. as a giants fan, i've learned never to count that man out. :>

  • harriedpsychmajor said on Nov 28, 2007....
Ooh! Ed, Giants and Eagles on the 9th of December.

Comparing schedules, it looks like the Giants have it a little easier, except for the whole Week 16 matchup against those precious Patties. We have it okay except for Dallas. Then again, I'm pretty sure the Giants will have the edge against us.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 28, 2007....
harried: right now, i'm not so confident about the smurfs. the season-ender against the pats, my only hope right now is that belichick wants to rest his starters.

    ed
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Nov 28, 2007....
Well, given the track record, it's not likely Belichick will bring in the second-stringers. If they didn't rest Brady and co. when beating their opponents by 4 TD's in the last quarter, they likely won't do it on the last game of the season. The Colts did that a couple years ago when they locked the top spot in the AFC, then lost to the Steelers. I don't think Belichick would take that risk.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 28, 2007....
well, it's not just that though, harried: i think that a lot of defenses are looking to take cheap shots at brady. i know i said resting his starters but what i think belichick should really be worried about is injuries. we see every week in the league a star player go down for the game--or sometimes the season--with an injury.

    ed
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Nov 29, 2007....
Well, let's hope Belichick can get his ego out of the way so he can make it happen. I'm willing to gamble, however, that he  really wants the team to go 16-0.

Oh, and all this McNabb talk made me wonder if you saw this Onion article. Or this one. And who could forget this lovely article? Gee, the Onion really likes picking on Donny.
