you're hosting a movie marathon, in which you are showing 3 (or more, as appropriate) films in a film series (e.g., star wars saga)--or if you prefer, up to 12 (sequential) episodes of a single TV show.

for the sake of argument, assume that you and a few like-minded friends have the time to do so. similarly assume that your guests would be equally amenable to whatever options you might have.

what films (or TV show eps) are you showing? be as specific as you like but at least list which films/shows and if necessary, which versions.

and why did you select that series/show?

mmmmm. i'd have a bunch of friends over who like old movies.

    we'd watch
arsenic and old lace -cary grant *swoon*
charade- cary grant and audrey hepburn *double swoon*
    sabrina - audrey hepburn *swoon*

see how they flow into each other? *grin* ....and the why? because i have a crush on both of them.

OR......all the james bond movies from dr. no to casino royale, ........and the original casino royale which was not a bond movie but a spoof. which is still cool. *grin*
why? cause james bond is just awesome!

OR.......all of the elvis movies....though i'll have to find a bunch of imaginary people to watch those with....real people think i'm nuts.
why? ....cause watching elvis be sweet and innocent just makes me feel good.

My top picks for a movie marathon would be:

The original Star Wars trilogy, the Die Hard series, a Tarantino night featuring Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs and Kill Bill 1&2.

As for TV shows, I vote for an Angel marathon.

Why did I choose these? Because they're my favorites.

  • Fallyn said on Nov 26, 2007....
    box......i'd join your marathon!

I wanna go to Mr. Box's house too! All of his choices are on my list, but I'll add a couple more. I'd have to go with the American Pie movies too. And a TV marathon of Buffy and Friends.

fallyn: ah, classics. :> gah, i've seen the original casino royale, let's just say our opinions of it differ considerably. :>

mr box: oo, nice set of movies! :> but wait--really? angel over buffy, huh?

kyle: yeah, the american pie movies were good stuff, weren't they? heh, i woulda been shocked if you didn't list buffy. :>

depending on the mood there are a few marathons I'd stay home to watch.

    For quirky movies:
    Six String Samurai
    Pulp Fiction
    Mad Max

    For marital arts films:
    Last Samurai
    Kill Bill 1&2
    Hero

I'd watch most sci-fi space series (Stargate, Star Trek, etc.) and I like a lot of the CSI series.

  • silverwhisper said on Nov 26, 2007....
    fallyn: o hell yeah!

u-i: never did see six string samurai, will have to check it out.

me, i'm thinking either the LOTR films or the majority of firefly. :>

  • quietone said on Nov 26, 2007....

for comedy I'd have to go with "American Pie" series (at least the first 3)

for drama I would go for the Hannibal Lector series (I like anthony hopkins)

as for tv series..awe, have to be "The Waltons" or "Little House" (cause its a girl thing and we cried with them)

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Nov 26, 2007....
ed, you can do the Firefly marathon and just come over for the LOTR one, because that's my pick (extended version of all three).

We actually did that once in college. :)

Well, I graduated in May of '05, so...yes. :) We did that in January, just after returning from winter break. It took most of the weekend because of all of the extras we watched. Four guys (including bff but not DH) and me, squeezed onto one futon and a computer chair. :-D

Being the sci-fi geek that I am...  I could NOT pick just 12 episodes of TNG, soooo:

Star Trek IV (if you have to pick just one, that's the one, isn't it? though I could totally watch them all, with the exception of "the motion picture" - once every 5 years or so is enough for that one!)
    Star Wars IV (at least)
Space Camp (yeah, I know... but it was my favorite movie growing up! I can still quote large sections of the script)
Independence Day (Jeff Goldblum = <3  Jeff Goldblum + Will Smith = <3<3)
Serenity (I'm sure it's not the same as the series, but I really enjoyed the movie)
    I, Robot
    Bicentennial Man

I know I'm leaving out tons of good stuff here even within my general "space opera" theme (I know Space Camp doesn't fit that but it falls in with the "campy" first half of my marathon.)  And then when you go outside of that, there's even more really great stuff.  But  I am only on my 2nd cup of tea for the day so I'm having a hard time coming up with any more atm!

  • cakebottom said on Nov 26, 2007....
If my options come from my own movie collection, the only marathons I could really do are Star Wars or Monty Python (movies or The Flying Circus).
In school my friends and I were always fond of bad animal horror film marathons.
  • lioneljay said on Nov 26, 2007....
I could get behind a wide range of marathons. For years my family did the original Star Wars trilogy on successive nights each summer. I would have nothing to do with the three prequels though. A few ideas that come to mind:

All the Emmanuelle movies (simply for the camp value as all but the first were second-rate trash).

The eleven great films directed by Preston Sturges. This includes Sullivan's Travels, The Palm Beach Story, The Lady Eve, and Miracle of Morgan's Creek, The Great McGinty among others.

How about a few good war flicks:

Patton, M*A*S*H, The Great Escape, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Glory

And then, just for fun, a few great unsung comedies:

Monkey Business (Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe), Bedtime for Bonzo (Ronald Reagan), Bedazzled  (the Dudley Moore original only, thank you), Smokey and the Bandit.
  • lfbno7 said on Nov 27, 2007....
I'd have The Lady Eve in there, the one with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. I like watching Barbara Stanwyck manipulating him the way she does. She's funny and quick.

I might have City Lights in there. I like the sweet ending, when the poor tramp is finally seen by the pretty flower girl and she loves him.

Maybe I'd have Closely Watched Trains in there, though it has subtitles. Some really funny lines. I like when the young guy is fretting over the fact that he's a virgin, and he decides what he needs is an older woman to break him in, and he turns to his co-worker and says "What about your wife?" Laughed so hard I hurt my ribs.

    cb: oo, a python-athon!

LJ: i don't believe that i've seen any sturges films--i think i have to add a few things to my netflix queue. glory is such a powerful film--i remember the first time i saw that...it absolutely blew me away. :>

lbf: i'll confess, i've never seen a single one of the films you described and i need to address that. :>

  • lioneljay said on Nov 27, 2007....
SW, I'd start with The Palm Beach Story and then go to The Lady Eve, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, and then Sullivan's Travels. If you can find it, Mad Wednesday (sometimes called The Sin of Harold Diddlebock) is a double treat because it stars Harold Lloyd, one of the greats of the silent screen. You'd also appreciate Unfaithfully Yours (but don't even think about getting the remake with Dudley Moore. As much as I loved Dudley, this was a very weak imitation). The Great McGinty is a very funny send-up of Chicago machine politics, and it's nearly true today. Our current governor isn't much different from McGinty.
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Nov 27, 2007....
B-movie marathons are awesome! I'd lead off with some early Roger Corman action:
    The Wasp Woman
    It Conquered the World
The original Little Shop of Horrors (NOT the Rick Moranis one)

Of course, it wouldn't be a B-movie marathon without the great Ed Wood:
    Jail Bait
    Bride of the Monster
    Glen or Glenda
And, of course, the ever-legendary Plan 9 from Outer Space

To cap it all off, one of the cheesiest, worst-produced films of all time, one which never ceases to amaze and entertain everyone, my all-time favorite movie:

    Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 27, 2007....
    LJ: my thanks, sir.

harried: honestly, i don't have much of an affinity for b movies--maybe it's just me. although i do have a great fondness for the kentucky fried movie. does that count?

Ah, Z's list of sports movies takes me to another short list. The list of good golf movies is so short that one has to fiddle a bit to create a marathon. But, here goes:

Follow the Sun (bio of Ben Hogan)
    Tin Cup
    The Greatest Game Ever Played
    Caddyshack
    Caddyshack
    Caddyshack
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 28, 2007....

actually, what did you think of the legend of bagger vance?

  • lioneljay said on Nov 28, 2007....
SW, I've seen The Legend and there is a good reason why it's not on my list. The golf scenes are poorly done and the only real reason to see the movie is to fantasize about Charlize Theron pouring that honey sweet voice into one's own ears.

Vampire and Other Creatures Marathon (well mostly vampire)
Blade Trilogy (Blade, Blade II, Blade: Trinity)

    Sci-Fi/Fantasy Marathon 1:
    Riddick Trilogy

    Mad Max

    Macbeth (Polanski)
    Shakespeare in Love (Madden)
    A Midsummer's Night's Sex Comedy (Allen)
Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh - just ignore Keanu Reeves as he's not onscreen much)
    Ran (Kurosawa)
The Secret Sex Lives of Romeo and Juliet (Buckelew - this one caused some scandal at the Cinema 2000 film festival in Toronto)
