A few of you have heard (read) me mention that I am writing a novel. I wouldn't call it a big deal. It's just that I always had ideas for stories but never wrote them (or typed them) and I finally decided that if I never do anything about it nothing will ever come of it. So, two years ago I began writing it and I have worked on it on and off since then.

Well, the story is coming to an end and that means once I finish it I will have to go back and read it over and check for inconsistencies and any other errors that stand out before I submit it to any publishers. I am on the third last chapter and building up to the climax. The stage is set for action and chaos but as it happens, along the way I have reached a point where I haven't decided exactly how the story should go to reach the big finish. Often while writing, the story will take off on its own and I will just try to keep up with the flow as I type. But now I have to stop and think a little.

The other night I went to bed thinking of how to move the characters to the next main scene. I thought about it so much that I began dreaming of what would happen next. After each dream I would wake up and think, "Yeah, that's awesome. I'll go with that." But then I would really wake up and think the idea was silly.

For example, one time I woke up and thought, "Cool. That'll be really exciting." Then I realized my characters were not young apprentice Jedi and they did not have light sabers. Another time I woke up thinking, "Great. Yeah, they are in school and about to take a test but they haven't studied for it and..." Wait that was me. Oh, right. I often have dreams like that. My characters have also suddenly developed magic powers and were able to deflect flying furniture with a force field, or they could suddenly fly past their enemies. Each time I woke up thinking what a great idea it was and then realized it was preposterous.

It's at a time like this it is best just to let the story stew in my mind for a while and then sit down and attempt to carry it on. Usually then the story moves on its own and once again I am left just trying to keep up with it.

hmm, i don't know, morphing the characters into jedi to finish the action probably hasn't been done before. it would make your novel unique! :-)

actually, i'm really impressed hot, i've started probably 12 books in 20 years, and never got so far as to finish the first chapter. btw, what are you going to do about the fact that when it comes out and we all read it, we'll all know who you are?

It is great how the subconsciousness works and it helps us I am sure. Good Luck with your novel.

Maybe your subconscious is telling you that you need to write a book about magical superheroes with special powers? If you did, you'd have some great ideas! Good luck with the novel, man. I hope it's a best seller!

travelr712, well that is a bit of a dillema, isn't it. I'd love to hear feed back from the SC crowd but then you guys would associate all the dirty secrets with the real person. I might just keep it quiet or I'll write a post ripping the book apart with criticism.

I know what you mean about starting but never getting far. I have a friend who is in the same situation. That's why I figured I should just pick an idea and go with it. Otherwise I would have a lot of chapter one's on my computer.

skald, I think my subconscious mind is just having fun with me. Thanks for the encouragement.

silverW, K said the hardest part about writing a first novel must be being able to stick with it and not give up. So far it has been fun. I don't expect it to be accpeted but I sure as heck will try to push it.

Alyss, stewing sometimes takes weeks or months. I want to finsih before the baby is born so I have to hoof it a little.

evilT, with your ghost stories and my magical superheros I think we could start a new comic book!
