As I said in Ed's post about snow, we've been snowed under here in a matter of days!  I can't believe how fast winter has hit, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it.  I could write a whole post just about my thoughts and feelings on winter, but I came here to post photos!  And there will be lots of them. You have been warned!

For those of you that are living in warmer areas and dreaming of white Christmases, you have my permission to live vicariously through me for the rest of this post! But really, the photos don't do it justice. I kept thinking that the whole time I was taking these. None of these can really show you how deep the snow is, or how the wind has sculpted it, or how it silences everything, or how magical it feels to be out walking in it. But Infernal (because I was thinking a lot about you while I took these), I hope that one day when our lives are more settled, you'll be able to come see it for yourself and we can enjoy it together - or maybe you'll end up in a place where you have some of your own! I would love that for you.

But on to the pics!

First off, I thought I'd go snap a few shots off the back terrace of our apartment building.  But I was greeted by this!

Here's more of an establishing shot:

And another for good measure:

It's not that there was that much snow, although there was a TON of it. It had more to do with the wind blowing it into the little alcove where the doorway is. More evidence of wind out the front side of the building:

Next I headed downstairs to take a few street shots. I wish you could have seen some of the things I didn't get pictures of - the wonderfully comic stances people had to get into to be able to feed their meters, for example! But this will have to do:

And the other way:

More evidence of the wind:

Next I came to an intersection and took a couple of nice distance shots of the water. Just a few days ago there was no ice, or maybe just a little skin. A few days or weeks from now it will be solid white!

Next I went to a small municipal parking lot and "green" space (in summer it's green anyway!)

Glad neither of these cars are mine:

I thought the bench facing a giant snowbank looked whimsical:

Closing in on the snowbank to get an idea of how big it is:

A little closer...

and this is just one of two or three this size cleared off this lot - and the lot had been recovered in snow that needs to be cleared off again. These things get HUGE by the end of the season!

I had a few more shots in mind I wanted to get, but right about then my camera battery died. It's just as well; I was getting a bit overzealous with my photography! Got a lot of weird looks from people walking by, like, "What is she doing taking pictures of plain old snow?" Most people here are very utilitarian about winter; they have to be to get through it. I'm a hopeless romantic and I think snow is terribly photogenic! ...but ask me again in three months and we'll see ;) These are far from my best photos, but let me know what you think anyway :)

I really liked the pictures! It's beautiful there. Having never lived in a place it snows though, I'd probably have no idea how to actually get around in that stuff. But I would love to wake up and find all that snow piled up outside. It would be awesome. At least until I had to shovel it out of my way!

Thanks for the great pictures :-)

I was born in Ohio and now live in Tucson, AZ where I was stationed makes me want to Cry and miss home when I see the snow like that.  I miss snowman, and snowball fights, and making Angels and the feeling of stepping in the snow and it getting inside your shoe.  When your feet go numb and feel funny and you can't wait to get inside to get Hot Coco.  Wow those were the days.

I'm Envious of you right now LOL.

    OMG, SNOW!!! :-D

    [happy dance of snow joy]

How awesome!!! I mean, it might not be to somebody who has to sludge around in it and has for decades, but wow! I hope by next winter to be someplace where we at least have a chance of the white stuff.

I love the shots of the bench by the snowbank. I would sit there! :-D

I forgot to say it in my comment, but you bet I'll be up there whenever we can reasonably do something like that! :)

E_T: Heh, yeah, shovelling is no fun.  The upside to living in an apartment is that we don't have to!  We don't even have a car to shovel out right now.  It does change how you do pretty much everything - dressing, walking, driving, how long it takes to get out the door or get somewhere, how often you have to mop the floor - but you learn and get used to it and then you have a blast!  If you're anything like me anyway.  I know lots of people don't like it, but I have always been one of those hardy people that loves the cold, and getting through our winters becomes like a point of pride for me!

Cyphonik: Hello!  It's nice to meet you.  I know exactly what you mean.  A good snowy winter is sometimes uncomfortable, but somehow that's part of the fun of it!  And when it's something you grew up with, you always miss it.  Most of my family is from the south, but I spent a lot of my childhood years up north.  It killed me to go back south.  I missed the snow, and I missed the ocean.  I love where I live now, because I have both of those things again.  I think one of the reasons I get so excited when it snows is that it's like a part of me that was missing before, and now I've got it back.  It's a lot like coming home.

I hope that it didn't upset you too much to see this post!  Or that if it did, you will feel better soon.

Infernal: we were posting at the same time!  I need to get some actual snow boots and pants so I can go tromping fearlessly through the snow.  And I need to talk DH into buying a sled and going to the city park!

You know, every time it snows, I think of you and I wish you could be here to see it.  Not in the sense that "I can't enjoy this because you're not here," but more of a, "Wow, it would make her so happy to see this!" :D  I am really looking forward to seeing you again and meeting your wonderful family!  And if you ever reach a point where you need to get away by yourself, you're welcome here then too!  I don't have my "travelling papers" yet but it should be soon (there is some more red tape that we weren't expecting; nothing serious but it extends the timeline a bit).  As soon as I can leave and reenter the country, we will be saving for a vacation stateside, and after my grandparents, getting to see you is my priority!

I think the awesomeness of snow depends a lot on your attitude.  People who get grumpy about it are the kind of people who see the glass half empty to begin with, you know?  The kind to see everything as a problem or an obstacle to begin with ("God, I've got to put on my gloves, and then I have to scrape the car, and then walk through the snow")  But I know when I'm older it will be harder to get around, and I'll have less energy, and maybe I'll like it less then.  And I also know that I am "hot-blooded" - as a baby, my parents would be turning up the thermostat for themselves and I was already sweating! and even now, even here, I am one of the last people I know to switch to a winter coat - and that not everybody can tolerate the cold.  So maybe it's just easier for me ;)

And I totally have no idea where I was going after that thought, so I think I'd better leave it alone :p

First when I saw your post I though it was my post.I had a post with the same name a few days ago  Old pictures from a newpaper. I live in Iceland and it has not snowed yet here. Great pictures and amazing how much it has snowed. Thanks for sharing.
  • Mamie said on Nov 24, 2007....
wonderful! Wait, did I miss this part? Where the heck are you? I too love the bench in front of the snow bank..kind of like the human having to sit and speak to Mother Nature! Funny!

Crybabylu: I bet it's cold, lol!

Ed: Well, this was considered a storm, because it all fell within a day or two and it was snowing constantly the whole time.  We'll probably have a bunch more storms like that during the winter, plus some more gentle snowy days.  The city carts it off or it melts under the sun, so it's not like we're buried up to the gills or anything!  But I'd say it's a pretty standard snowstorm for us - enough to still be amazed ("Look at that! It's still snowing out there!") but nothing we haven't seen before, either.

The bench shot is probably my favorite of the batch.  This town is competely different in winter than in summer.  By midwinter, you can't tell where the sidewalks really are.  Half the trash cans and benches are completely buried, and you have to do special calisthenics to get to a parking meter or a crosswalk button!  It doesn't feel like the same place at all.  And in the summer there's no indication of what it's like in winter.  I though the bench had a certain comedy to it, but it also illustrates that idea :)

Skald: I just went and took a look at your post.  I am a history buff and I love seeing old photographs!  Thanks for sharing those!

It's weird for me to think that we might have a "harsher" winter than in Iceland, but I have read in several places where you say the weather is really unpredictable.  I think that would be the worst.  If it's going to be winter, I'd rather it just go ahead and BE winter, instead of never knowing what the weather will be!

Mamie: I'm in Quebec (I don't like to say what town, but it's not one of the two major ones you think of when you think of Quebec).  You know, that bench picture is starting to take on a life of it's own!  It looks a lot more...well, picturesque, than I thought it would when I snapped it.  I'm starting to be really proud!
  • Mamie said on Nov 24, 2007....
thank you NytQ: Quebec is just beautiful!!

Great pictures! Very beautiful, but I am shivering just thinking about it.

nyt: That bench is filling up! ;-) And I have to admit, I did another happy dance upon reading that you expect to have your traveling papers sooner than later. Maybe we'll be in a real house by the time you make it toward wherever we call home! :)

Yes you are right. It would be good to know that the winter was maybe from November until April. Then sometimes we are waiting and May might be cold June too. It is tiring. But we also might have a very good may. You never know. Thanks for your answer.

Sugar! That IS a LOT of snow!!! Pretty, but I am sure hazzardous!
  • wombat said on Nov 24, 2007....
The pictures are beautifully artistic, but I don't want to see snow like this where I live again like last year!  (They plowed it into piles like that in parking lots, too)  It was pretty for awhile, I guess, but then it gets all dirty and ugly from exhaust fumes.  Glad you took the pics before then!

(I especially liked the one of the stairs--the fifth photo.)

Just looking at the photos I can smell the air and feel it. I can here the sound of snow under my feet and no matter how noisy it gets outside the snow seems to dampen all sound, as if a huge silence is trying to make its presence felt. I love snow like what I saw in your photos.
