Someone - Fallyn - posted a question about what people collect.
That led me to some memories and to a followup question.
Say you are collecting a certain item that is relatively expensive. So you find a plate you know is worth at least $100 and you see it at a yard sale with $1 on it.  (realize a $100 plate with a small crack is worth less than $1).

Do you buy it for a buck and smile all the way home, or do you tell the owner?

For me i guess it would depend on my mood and how i felt about the person. If i thought they were poor, for instance, id tell them. But if it was a yard sale in a rich neighborhood, i probably wouldnt.

My brother - a serious antique dealer - would try to talk them down to 50 cents and never blink.

What would you do?

i actually had a garage sale once and i had a small china teapot that i'd had in my basement in a box of things my mom gave me that belonged to my grandmother.

i had a $5 tag on it, and my first customer came in, picked it up, turned it over, and told me i didn't want to sell it at a garage sale.

that's when i began collecting china teapots....

i hope i'd do the same for someone else-

that is a great question....I guess it depends on what it is and how badly I wanted it....I certainly would be tempted to say nothing....but like you, I think it would depend on my mood...if the person having the yard sale gave me a bad vibe.....then I would giggle all the way back to the car!

i think it would for me depend on who it was that was selling it....

whether i could actually afford more....or even wanted it.

i do love a bargain. but if someone really needs the money...i don't think i could do it.

It takes nothing less than a commitment, a truly responsible one, to the customer it serves....
Although it’s painlessly easy to make a profit selling your antiques and collectibles with Recycler.com, “old” does not always designate “antique.” For example: a 1950s radio is a great antique that could fetch a pretty penny....
