in your experience, is it uncommon these days for men to have an ear pierced? does it imply anything to you?

Jeez, I've seen just about everything pierced these days.
When my son was in 3rd grade one of the boys had his ear pierced, another had a mohawk.
It doesn't surprise me and it doesn't imply anything because I don't think that way.
I keep asking my boys, when we go to Walmart, if they want to get their ears pierced.
Reverse psychology at it's best!  It's just not cool if it's Mom's idea!
  • evil_twin said on Nov 20, 2007....
I still see it all the time. But usually it's both ears pierced instead of one. And the piercings have gotten a lot more extreme. Like big disks in their ears instead of just a little earring. The single little diamond stud seems to be a bit out of style though. At least around here.

I pierced my own ear way back in the day but I haven't worn an earring in it since high school.

As always, I agree with Mamie.  I think it's very sexy.  One ear pierced with a tasteful bit of earring in it is HOT.

ear piercings are old hat....they just mean they wanted their ears pierced.....almost anything pierced is old hat....I do have to say that I find it sexy....well at least some piercings....I don't like more metal than skin though...
  • beyondtheveil said on Nov 20, 2007....
Ed- I don't see it a lot, but know there are many men who have pierced ears in my area. I don't mind it and look on this the same as a tattoo- I don't want one, but will admire yours.

What I do not care for is pierced noses, lips, and tongues. Those distract me and make me think its solely an attention getter. These are not the same as pierced ears or a tattoo.

pickers: bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! i love the reverse psych! :D

kyle: yeah, i've noticed too that a lot of the time, guys have both now. that surprises me when i see it, i'll confess.

mamie: i'm sorry, you were being kinda circumspect. what did you mean? :D

mimi: i had no idea you liked it so much! :>

tg: i'll confess, i find facial piercings a bit weird still. i dunno, i wonder if that doesn't mean i'm old sometimes.

beyond: i'll confess, i don't quite get nose or lip piercing, although the tongue piercing has a very specific meaning, you know...

i don't think it's uncommon to see men with a single ear piercing or a both ears pierced. i think it can be sexy on some men. some men, it just doesn't seem to work for though.

@beyond...yeah...i pierced my nose just to get attention. [/sarcasm]

although I might add...my daughter got my grandsons ears done...one ear..that is too young.  I don't llike seeing them on young boys.  I don't really know why.
  • fearing said on Nov 20, 2007....
I don't think it is uncommon and it doesn't imply anything to me.  Maybe I'm around too many teenage boys that have their ears pierced for it to seem anything but common.  It simply isn't a big deal to me.  If Sweety got his ear pierced, I may wonder though.  That would be odd.
My oldest had been talking about getting his ear pierced for a while and the day he turned 16, I took him to get his ear pierced and I was the one to suggest it that day.  I think he was a little freaked out by it.   Several of his friends' parents had remarks to make about it - me being the one to take him.  I believe in choosing the battles with kids.  He didn't keep the piercing for more than 6 months.  Must have been a phase.
  • skald said on Nov 20, 2007....
No it does not but I know my husband would never have his ears pierced. Some guys haver really nice little ear rings I think. One ring is nice.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Nov 20, 2007....
I know more guys without than with. That said, it can be quite sexy if it's done tastefully.

It doesn't imply anything to me other than he thought he'd like to have his ear pierced. What's in it says more about the person, IMO, than just having it pierced does. I mean, you can say a lot with jewelry.

  • travelr712 said on Nov 20, 2007....
i still see it sometimes, but it seems to be on the downswing. i don't think nowadays it means anything more than a fashion statement. piercings and tatoos have become the new 'cheap sunglasses'. interesting how we've progressed to physical mutilation in our quest for ever more shocking fashion, dontcha think?
  • pickersplock said on Nov 20, 2007....
They should make press on piercings and more elaborate temporary tattoos.
That way you wouldn't have to commit!

This is a funny story, a very good friend of mine got her nose pierced in New York City.  I saw her a week later and she had removed the piercing.  I asked her why.
She replied, "Well, I got a terrible cold and the buggers kept collecting on the post, so I took it out.  It was just too disgusting."
She never put it back in.

I see earrings on a lot of men.  I don't think it means much, other than the guy wanted to put something on his ear.  I do think it provides insight to men about wearing earrings so that when they buy for women they choose more wisely.

super z: yeah, i imagine it's about the combined effect, huh?

    mimi: you are indeed! :>

CW: i'll confess i'm a tad surprised for some reason. :>

quietone: yeah, as i'm thinking about it, i suppose i can see that. how old is your grandson, though?

fearing: you know, i'm realizing that i don't see it all that often myself. i'm wondering if people see me and think "dude, 1985 called and wants its earring back!" :>

    skald: i had a feeling you'd have a laid-back view on it. :>

infernal: honestly, as i was saying to fearing, i see it infrequently myself. and good point re: the earring itself saying something rather than the piercing itself.

trav: well, i wouldn't go as far as calling it mutilation, myself. but body modification as a means of self-expression is something i freely confess i don't really grok.

pickers: bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! i'm sorry, i'm finding that really funny, if a tad gross... :>

bronx: i believe the response would be "why not", although i shouldn't speak for fans.

fallyn: see, i have the "ow" reaction to facial piercings, like the eyebrow.

moon: someone's been spending time w/ kids, i see... :D

u-i: that's a very interesting poitnt re: insights and gift-giving!

travlr712 -- Hey, I'm geek enough to use grok! I use it all the time!

    Regarding male piercings:

For earrings, when I was a kid, left was right, right was wrong. I notice that that's no longer valid.

In high school a girlfriend at the time pierced my ear with a needle and gave me an earring to put into it. It was pretty cool.

My dad wasn't very crazy about it, but my stepmom had never had her ears pierced. So she was on my side since my girlfriend pierced her ears for her.

A problem came up though -- I enjoyed playing tackle football at lunch. You don't really want to do that with an earring in your ear. So I would take the earring out of my ear and poke it through my shirt to hold it.

Unfortunately, about a month after getting my ear pierced, I dropped the one earring that I had into the grass and I couldn't find it again. The hole closed up and I never again got a piercing.

I also remember when I was in the Marines, a buddy of mine got his nipple pierced. Now, earrings were verboten in the Marines at the time, but other piercings were kind of a gray area. I think that he got into a little bit of trouble over it for showing it off, but the powers that be couldn't really do much since it wasn't codified as being against regulations.

Hmm. I also saw my first tongue piercing while in the Marines -- but that was on a female. Still, it was a little disturbing at the time.
  • travelr712 said on Nov 20, 2007....
fallyn - as i understand it, the point of a tongue piercing isn't to benefit the guy... ;-)

I had my oldest son's ear pierced when he was 2 years old.  My girlfriend's stepfather is from a line of Romanian Gypsies (no shit!).  His grandmother pierced his ear because he is the oldest male and it's a tradition in their family to pierce the oldest boy's ear as a symbol of prosperity and fertility.  I liked that belief and so adopted it.  But I had him take my son to get it done!

Two of the girls I work with have their tongues pierced.  While I can't imagine doing that myself, given the choice I'd rather my tongue than my nose or eyebrow.

  • Lioness said on Nov 21, 2007....
ed, I've seen a lot of guys having their ear pierced. Seldom do I see two ears pierced, though. I am not sure, but guys wearing earrings somehow sends a message that he is a hippie or is a member of a fraternity.

A friend asked me to pierce his ears years ago and he wore an earring... I think it's cool, although it doesn't look good to all men.

I know lots of guys with all sorts of piercings. Ears are usually the first they do because it's more acceptable than some of the other piercings.

I have no current piercings but I used to wear a ring at the top of my ear. It got inflamed really bad once and I took it out and the hole closed up almost immediately.

I never redid it. But I think earrings can be a cool look on a guy if they're done right.

I'm an older guy who works in a professional occupation. My wife recently suggested that I get my ears pierced. "One or both," I asked, and she responded, "Both." They were pierced about 1½ weeks ago, and I wear diamond studs in both, although I plan to move to silver hoops after the healing period. My wife thinks that they're most attractive, and I enjoy the feel of them. But I do have to remove them for when I visit clients. One has to look specifically to see the holes, and very few people who look at men look at their ears to see if they are pierced.
