Something ed posted got me thinking about this: Do you have different styles of communication for email, IMs, text messages, blogging, and/or forum posts?

I tend to use proper capitalization and punctuation in blog and forum posts as well as in emails (regardless of the degree of formality - or lack thereof - between the recipient and myself). I all but refuse to text message anybody, and when I do, I don't slip into "r u there" shortcuts. Those irk me to no end.

However, when I use AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), which I do frequently every day, I drop all capitalization. I still punctuate properly (though I have a friend who doesn't even keep apostrophes in contractions - *twitch*), but for some reason, I don't feel the need to use capital letters, and I never have. I guess I was channeling cummings when I started using instant messenger programs, and the habit stuck.

What about you? Do your communication habits vary depending on what you're doing (or with whom you're communicating) online or via text message?

I pretty much type the same way, no matter what I'm doing. Although I have been guilty of using 'R U ok' shortcuts in text messages. That's only because I don't have a text friendly phone and I have to beep, beep, beep through all the letters. It takes forever. It's sheer laziness. And I'll use numbers like 2 instead of to. I hate it, yet I do it because it's easier.

This is why I don't text anything substantial to anyone. Because I'd annoy myself! But with IM I type just like I type my blog or an email. Although I make a lot more typos because I don't bother to proof read it during a chat.

I like to use abbreviations sometimes when I type. Not text message speak though! I will use w/ for with and b/c for because. I don't type fast enough to always want to spell it out! LOL And I do that everywhere......chatting, email and texts.

I don't capitialize text messages unless it does it automatically though......

i relentlessly use lowercase everywhere. i generally use most regular english although i'll use some online abbrevations (e.g., IMHO, etc) as well as l337 (ya n00b!) but that's really it.

except for in formal communication in which i communicate accordingly.

I text using the most abbreviations I can get way with and still be understood. I cannot use apostrophes in texting because I don't know where they are!
In email, I rely on auto spell check which makes commenting on soulcast to be a little bit unfriendly if I am in a hurry and want to type out a long comment quickly....
other than that, it's all the same from me! mamie

the only time uppercase is ever used is in a formal letter, or when i'm hand writing something. or, when i'm emphasizing a word. i often type as fast as i think....so stuff doesn't really get edited for content......what's on the page is what's comin out of my head. i often misspell words if that's how i say them in real life......i guess i have an obsession to let my personality come through.

in texting i have to remind myself to use shortcuts or it will take me FOREVER. but i forget a lot.....and it does take me forever cause i don't like them.

I do it like you. In im's, speed is important, so it is a waste of time to capitalize. Why make someone wait like that?

Basically I rarely use cyber abreviations except for btw. I always try to write correctly with proper punctuation (to the best extent of my knowledge) and with proper capitalization (I hate after posting to notice i instead of I). With text messages, however, I like to add little icons. A heart, a blown kiss, or a smiling face add a nice touch.

i tend to write all online formats in lower case. i guess i do this because they are informal, and it's just faster and easier to keep up with my thoughts without worrying too much about punctuation and what not. i do, however, use proper case and punctuation when i'm writing my blog, because that's more of a formal medium where i'm communicating with a large audience, rather than informally with one person.
