yesterday the mrs and i went to church. now, the night before i knew that it was gonna be a lousy weather day: weather.com let me know, and they're very rarely wrong, IMX.

so we got in the car and headed off. after a while, we realized that the rain was turning to something else: what the weather channel has taken to calling "wintry mix" but that i grew up calling "wet snow". or alternately, "useless crap you can't make snowballs with".

what? can you seriously tell me you didn't call it that, either?

anyway: it took us a while to realize it, i guess b/c it's a bit early in the year to see snow. where i live we can go through christmas without seeing any snow, and that's the way the past few years have been here.

because it was a "wintry mix" rather than the one or the other, there was no accumulation whatsoever: it melted as soon as it hit the pavement/trees/grass/whatever. but it did make me wonder: where you are, when do you typically see your first snow of the year?

We usually don't, and I love snow.

If it snows at all, it's usually Jan/Feb. Those are our coldest months.

We had our first snow this year about two weeks ago, and we got some freezing rain and wintry mix again late last week.  It hasn't melted since, so I think winter is official!

That's about normal for our area, from what I've seen.  My husband, who grew up here, says it is generally warmer and winter is coming later than it used to.  But since I've lived here, we usually get our first snow in late October or November, but it doesn't usually start sticking until December.  Then we're buried until March at least and not completely slush-free until sometime in April.   They make a big mountain of snow every year in a storage yard outside of town, where they dump all the snow cleared from city streets, and because snow insulates itself, the snow pile doesn't melt completely away until well into May or June (sometimes even July!)

I could do without the godawful wind, but I absolutely adore our winter weather otherwise :D

We had our first bit of "wintry mix" just over a week ago. It was weird to see the snow that early.

They are forecasting the low 60s for here tomorrow and then snow for Wednesday, Thursday (Thanksgiving), and Friday.

we had some snow in higer elevations a week ago...first day of hunting.  But I noticed one car this weekend that must have came down off the Mt...it had about 3-4" of snow on its roof - yuck...not looking fwd to it.  We can see snow any where from Oct on.  And sometimes it lasts into May.

I live in Iceland and we can go through Christmas without seeing snow. In the 80's year after year it did not show until after Christmas and on my son“s 9th birthday which is on the 18 th of March we saw the first snow that year and oh boy that was snow. Knee deep.
It could snow in October you never know here. This country had unpredictable weather. We had frost two days ago and now it is raining and warm. Anyway we have countless words for snow but they  in Greenland have even more than us.
  • beyondtheveil said on Nov 19, 2007....
Ed- It has been in the eighties until day before yesterday. We haven't had a snow other than a "dusting" in several years, so I really don't expect any. We are just fine with it that way, because we can drive two hours and be in all kinds of snow in the winter. Can't think of a reason to want to live in the crap.

infernal: ah yes, i suppose it would be odd for you to have it where you are, huh? for some reason, i didn't even think about it when posting this--that various soulcasters just wouldn't have much, if at all (e.g., the californians).

nyt: hey wow, i was wondering when you guys get white stuff up there! when i was in high school, the local mall had this part of the lot where they pushed all the ploughed snow and yeah, that stuck around until april-ish, IIRC.

super z: the weather where you live never ceases to surprise the hell out of me, i must confess!

quietone: o right, where you are there are of course mountains and i suppose they must've had some up there. 3 to 4 inches though? i wouldn't have thought so much!

skald: that's weird, for some reason i keep thinking that you guys must get snow somewhat regularly--i guess you can blame leif ericsson for my thinking that!

beyond: dude--in the 80s? i never realized until now that i have no idea where you live! me, i like snow--so long as i don't have to shovel any driveways. :>

Let's see....it's November now....so we usually see snow about.......never! But we do get hail sometimes and that's the closest to snow on the ground we'll ever see here. You can make a pretty mean hail ball, but I wouldn't wanna be hit with that!

It hasn't snowed here yet.  That's fine with me  I don't like the stuff.  There have been times though that we have had measurable snow here by Halloween.  That's been a few years back.

Last year we got snow the day after Thanksgiving, but it's not looking good for this year.  I'm suspecting mid-December.

I grew up sans-snow however, so I get excited no matter when it arrives.

In Vancouver (or just back a bit in the valley where I lived anyway) the was the odd year where snow fell before Christmas a one or two winters with snow. But usually it falls once or twice in January and maybe in February and then once again in March. In most cases the snow doesn't last more than a half-day but if the snowfall is caused by an advancing cold front it can lay on the ground for a few days. Otherwise it usually comes as a cold front is pushed off by a warm front and it turns to useless crap you can't make snowballs with and melts right away.

Here in eastern Saitama I rejoice at the sight of snow. It may fall once or twice a year and lasts about as long as a roll of toilet paper in a convent school where everybody has the runs.

queen, lioness: yeah, kinda realized that belatedly... :p

Our temp's having been running near freezing for the last couple of weeks.  We have had light dustings but nothing that stayed around.  Green Christmases are unusual around here (southern Ontario, Canada), but not unheard of.  I like the snow and I LOVE the cold, I just hate all the slushy, messy in-between stuff.

yeah, ed, our weather can be strange. it's currently in the mid-50s but really grey and cloudy. it's supposed to hit the low 60s today but rain all day.

then the temp is supposed to start dropping tonight and be about 15 degrees color tomorrow and another 15 cooler by Thanksgiving with projections of a wintery mix turning to snow.
  • travelr712 said on Nov 20, 2007....
it depends on the year. sometimes in october, sometimes in february. our weather channels were predicting the low 30's today, and it's in the mid 60's, but sunday was in the low 40's. like they say, if you don't like indiana weather, wait 5 minutes, it'll change!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 20, 2007....

    Ed,
Last year we had snow hear by now.  We were blessed with a long fall this year.  Snow is wiggling into our forecast for this Wednesday.  I would say that late October or early November is the norm for us as far as snowfall beginning.  We get winter storms up until April.  The old timers are saying this will be a mild winter.  I hope they are right.

The day after this post went up, we got a weather alert. It's been snowing almost non stop for 2 days and 2 nights now!  We are totally buried.  I have no idea how much snow has actually fallen, but it's somewhere between 1 and 2 feet. Plus that lovely driving wind we're so famous for...  At least our city is equipped to handle this kind of thing, but that's still a TON of snow in such a short time!

I am thrilled :D  But so glad I don't have to drive, and I can just sit back and sip my tea and watch the snow fall.  Must buy snowpants my size this winter so I can go jump in all the snowbanks! (winter, as you can see, brings out the absolute most mature side of me :p )
