fallyn- I feel an affinity to Florence, Italy; Paris, France; London, England; and New York City. I've never been to any of these.

I feel an attachment to (other than my home town) St. Louis, Missouri.

I really like my city, despite the craziness of it. But I have a fondness for New York City too, even if I've only visited there once. I love Seattle and if I had to move, it would probably be there. And I liked Orlando Florida because that's where Disneyworld is, and I spent many summers there with my family.

New York City is my home town, whether it is Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan. Didn't spend so much time in the other two boroughs. In their own way, each one is the world in microcosm. For example, you drive through Brooklyn, you go a few blocks and the writing on the stores changes from Turkish to Hebrew to Spanish to Russian to What The Hell Is That. Seems that every country on Earth has a solid presence in Brooklyn. And as for Manhattan, every country on Earth is represented by a restaurant, which is great.

I like the Pennsylvania Dutch area, and New Orleans, but I can't say I feel any affinity for them. They make me feel like an outsider but I like it there. I guess the only places I'd feel totally at home now, considering that my childhood neighborhoods are unrecognizable, are midtown Manhattan, the Village, my current shitty little town in Jersey, and my prior home of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Anywhere else, I'd feel like a visitor.

rupert thanks. i've never been but that looks awesome.

beyond if i chose a city in italy it would be Milan......or Naples...(my family came from a village close by)

ET seattle is so awesome......people laugh at me...cause it reminds me of the jetsons cartoon.

iff you've got a good point there....if you feel like a visitor then it's not your city,.  that makes sense to me.

I grew up halfway between boston and new york.  I've only been to each one a few times and I can't say I feel that connected to either one.  new york seems to full of itself, like its the most important city in the world.  I like boston  but its such a pain to get to/from/around, I never go.  I used to like new orleans, and then I went there.  The french quarter was nice but so touristy.  Outside of that area, I saw a poor crime-ridden city with less of the culture I was expecting.  Don't take offense if I bashed your city, I'm really just not a city person at all.

I guess the only cities I like, that I could ever see myself living in, are Burlington, VT or Portland, OR.  My brother lives in burlington and my cousin in portland.  I've been to both and they are very earthy, hippie, cities.  I could see myself ending up in one some day.

I can't really say that I have a love of one particular city.  I find several interesting, but not enough to go out of my way to learn about them.  I'm not very well traveled.

    San Francisco,  US

sweetsoul.....curiosity here......why istanbul....what is it about that city?
  • sweetsoul said on Nov 18, 2007....
It's beautiful with the eastern influence. The mosques particularly...also Topkapi Palace, Haigha Sofia, the Blue Mosque. It's on the Bospherous River. The only city that's in Europe and Asia.

It's alive, has wonderful history, friendly people, great food.
  • TinSoldier said on Nov 18, 2007....
    I hate cities. I'm a country boy.

However, they are apparently a necessary evil and I would be lying if I didn't say that some had an effect on my life.

Portland, OR, of course. I was born there, although I hate visiting. There are still things there that I simply must see one of these days.

Everett, WA. That town just has a feel to it that I love. It feels to me the way that Portland should feel. I can't really put it into words though.

Otherwise, there are cities that I would eventually like to visit such as Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and maybe some others.

But I wouldn't want to live there.
  • gingersoul said on Nov 18, 2007....

Sweet Soul........Instabul is on my list too...go figure....:-)

I feel an instictual attraction to Lisboa, Vienna, Prague, Dublin, Barcelona, Wittenberg, Marrakesh, Athens, Bejin.

I left my heart in Rome, Florence, Milan, Sperlonga, Positano, Lucca, Venice, Gallura....well, all over Italy....:-)

I have a strong affinity with Paris, London, New York.....in each of these cities i have been at least twice....

  • Fallyn said on Nov 18, 2007....

I feel a real affinity for Boston as it was the first really "big" city that I ever knew. Never been to Paris but feel an affinity for it as French is my second language. Other places that I have enjoyed are San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon.

Places on my list that might draw me in are London, almost any city in Scotland, Rome, and Paris.

Cleveland, Ohio -- now stop laughing... I grew up there.

Nashville, Tennessee -- for many reasons, among them, I feel an affinity with a lot of cities in the south although I am a northerner, I'm interested in the history of country music, and the Grand Ol' Opry is there.  A great deal of history, not just of country music, but of the south, is associated with Nashville.

Never much cared about NYC, but I would love to visit the UK, especially London.  Now if they just had an accessible bathroom on a transatlantic flight, I'd be there in a flash.  Since they don't, I doubt I will ever see it.

  • Fallyn said on Nov 19, 2007....
that seriously sucks....but have you thought of a cruise?
  • MissMimi said on Nov 19, 2007....
I've never seriously considered it because of the time commitment, but when my husband retires (Oh jeez, did I say that?  Let's hope not for a while.), that might be an option.

Anthony Bourdain did a food show from Cleveland. He described it as a working man's town, a town that saw brighter days a number of decades ago, but then lost a ton of steel jobs and is never getting them back. It seemed to me like a rough and ready kind of town a bit like Chicago. Make that the south side of Chicago, the part where Bad Bad Leroy Brown came from. Seemed like a town with lots of blacks and lots of Poles eating sausages. I like pierogies but not sausages. Too greasy.
  • MissMimi said on Nov 19, 2007....
You're right, 7.  Pierogis = food of the gods.   Mmmmmm

    Hmmm...

Definitely Seattle, lived just outside of it for 3 years, and it is still very *Home* to me

The town I grew up in just outside of LA and many of the surrounding communities (LA, Hollywood, etc)

Its not a city...but I am definitely drawn to Jamaica as well

I like smaller cities, Seattle is great but i like the warmth of Olympia, Jackson Hole, Steamboat Springs, Bozeman and yes New Orleans. Dead Wood. Thanks
  • TinSoldier said on Nov 19, 2007....
    *sigh*

I used to want to go to New Orleans. Now -- not so much.

I was there in 2005. It was hot and humid and dead. Yuck. Have you ever seen a dead city? It's probably one of the most depressing sights ever. I kept waiting for the zombies to come out, but this wasn't a movie. It was real.

I don't know if I'll ever want to go back. The idea of a big party and good music and food appeals to me. Weather and crowds do not.
  • gingersoul said on Nov 19, 2007....
