Now this article raises my blood pressure.

The victim of a gang rape in Saudia Arabia is being sentenced to 6 months in jail and 200 lashes because she was in the car of a male that was not her relative.  This is an increase in her original sentence of 90 lashes for the offense, since she used the media to spotlight the insanity of the court system.

The Saudi court also increased the sentences of the 7 men convicted of gang raping her.  It went from 10 mo.- 5 years to 2 years-9 years.

Are we kidding here?!

I have the utmost respect for people who live their religious beliefs, but the injustice of the Sharia law that the Saudi's use is beyond tolerance.  I don't for a minute believe that the beliefs of Islam really intend to punish a girl for getting into the car with a non relative male to retrieve a picture.  I do believe that the male dominant government of Saudi Arabia is flexing it's muscles so that women will remain cloistered in homes, not willing to challenge the abuses they live with.

Would you let this happen to your daughter/wife/mother?

frankly, i think that saudis should vote w/ their feet and leave.

sadly, this kind of institutionalized misogyny is endemic in sharia law, AFAICT.

SW - How do you leave if you're punished for being in public without a male relative?
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 16, 2007....
    trick 'em.

Uni, they're tough over there, when I worked for a Multi National company we had a huge contract with the Saudi's. You would not believe the horor stories and not just about justice for women, but men caught up and thrown in awful prisons for traffic violations.

Yes, it's not fair, it's not right, but it's their country. On Friday's they had the beheadings in the town square and stoning to death as well. It's old time justice and it's not pretty......thank God we don't live there........those people are crazy.

mobil - I'll agree, those people ARE crazy.  Obviously not a place I'd thrive in.

my father worked is saudi arabia about eight years ago and he said there are laws in there that are just absurd. other muslim countries are not as strict as saudi arabia...

just be careful that while condemning a government you are not also condemning a people as a whole.

queen - I wonder what the motivation behind the exteme stance there is.

Fallyn - Yes, that would be wrong.  However, those who promote or allow things like this to stand must be called out when they are wrong.  I'm sure there are many really good people in Saudi Arabia, but it's just a sure that there are some very ego centric power hungry ones.

It saddens me that women are subjected to these laws but I wish that racism was not directed against Arabs because of these types of actions by government.  It is necessary to encourage change and development in the Middle East instead of responding with anger.

This is, in fact, how we know that whenever our politicians move into  a country in the name of democracy that we know they are full of it.  We count Saudi Arabia as an ally.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 17, 2007....
sadly, desert sienna appears incapable of distinguishing b/n anger and outrage.

ui: "I wonder what the motivation behind the exteme stance there is."

This would, in fact, be tantamount to answering the question of what is behind any form of oppression.  I'm guessing it's all about money and power and the absolute lack of the ability to empathize.  What do you think?
  • desertsienna2 said on Nov 18, 2007....
Racism towards Arabs will not aid America's pursuit of change in the Middle East.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 18, 2007....
racism is a pretty serious charge, desert sienna. are you saying that you are witnessing some here? b/c if you are, you should support that assertion w/ relevant evidence.

or are you, as usual, merely blogjacking?

kelly - I'm going with power on the reasoning behind the stance.  The government has it and the victim does not.  Even the convicted had more power than the victim.

desertsienna2 - don't muddle racism with a clear case of injustice.  It speaks poorly for you as an intelligent human being to think that anyone would not be able to tell the difference.

i think you're being unnecessarily charitable, kelly. :>
