I did some more "investigating" on the wedding cakes and think I've found my cake maker.  I regularly go to this little Italian Pastry shop by work.  They have the best of everything in there.  To make it even more fun they will put your purchases in pink boxes and tie them with string.  (I know, you don't eat the box or string, but it does add to the experience)

So I went in there earlier this week to see if they did wedding cakes.  They do.  In fact they have a seperate binder with all of the styles and shapes they make.  I was a little gun shy to ask how much they might run, but the lady was very nice.  It was considerably less and they deliver for a fee.  Whew!

I then explained that I loved their cakes, but the smallest one they make feeds about 30 people too many.  She thought about it for about 5 seconds and opened up the second binder of "regular" cakes.  Based on the number of guests I'm anticipating she thought they could make a regular cake and just decorate it as a wedding cake.  Perfect!!  As a bonus, the flavor choices tripled.  Costwise I will end up paying about 1/5th of the original price I was quoted by the fancy shop.

We will try to get back to the shop this weekend to taste cakes.  I'm leaning toward the cappucino and Bill really likes Tiramisu.  We may find that something a little less exotic will be equally as good and an easier sell to the whole group.  I've already decided to also order 1/2 dozen cupcakes for the children who will attend.

So here's the question part of this poll.

What is your favorite flavor of cake?

Would you pass on cake at a wedding if it was not a flavor you like?

I really should pay you all for your help.  Thanks for help.

Chocolate fudge cake is divine, a decent Victoria sandwich is delicious and Madeira if heavenly.

    I would avoid coffee cake.

Glad the cake part of the wedding planning is looking promising. ;-)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 15, 2007....
Alyss - Okay, I'm ignorant.  What is a Victoria sandwich?  You're probably right about the cappacino, I should probably negotiate for chocolate raspberry.
  • beyondtheveil said on Nov 15, 2007....
unique- To answer your first question, my favorite cake is German Chocolate (the light kind).

As to your second question, I would pass on one I didn't particularly care for if it was shown most people would like it. I would want one most of the people would like.
  • Alyss said on Nov 15, 2007....
u-i this should explain it. Victoria Sandwich cake
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 15, 2007....
BTV - I like chocolate cakes, and german chocolate if I have choices beyond that.

Alyss - Oh!  I've had that before.  I guess I didn't recognize the name of it.  I love fruit and custard fillings over frosting between layers of cakes.
  • mobil said on Nov 15, 2007....
    Really, really moist banana cake.

No I wouldn't pass on any cake haha.
  • Zayda said on Nov 15, 2007....
Red Velvet is my absolute favorite.

Hmm...I might pass on a cake if I didn't like the flavor. I really don't know.

For me, it's not so much the cake that causes me to pass but the way the cake is frosted. I'm not overly fond of fondant frostings on a cake. I prefer butter cream ones.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 15, 2007....

mobil - Banana is one of our flavor options.  I like it, but I wonder who besides you might like it.  I also like banana cream pie a lot.

Zayda - I can't remember the last time I was lucky enough to have a red velvet cake.  It's been awhile.  I like the way fondant frosting looks, but agree that buttercream tastes better.

I am not real picky when it comes to cake. My favorite cake is lemon though. I love that. The only sort of cake I dislike is anything with coconut in it, like German Chocolate. If someone served that at a wedding, I wouldn't eat it or at least I'd wipe all the frosting off. Otherwise, I'll eat anything cake related.

I think just a plain white cake that is moist with the butter cream frosting is perfect.  okay, now I have to ask...what is a red velvet cake? I have not heard of that one.  I would not pass on cake just out of politeness to the hostess..I'd at least take a bite.  I don't like that awfully over sweet frosting that most use though.
  • Zayda said on Nov 15, 2007....
Quiet: Red Velvet cake is a red chocolate cake (although sometimes it can be made without chocolate).

Red Velvet cake is fabulous with cream cheese icing.  mmmmm....

I don't even like most cakes--too sweet or something.  If I had it all to do all over again--a nice wedding I mean--I would go against the grain and have Cheesecake!

My mom used to make something called "Hummingbird Cake" that called for 1 dozen eggs.  It was pretty good--but I don't have the recipe.  Nor would I be inclined to try to make it....

Hope your cake and everything else falls into place...  Wait,--that sounded like I meant hope your cake falls!  Ha....Not at all!  Hope you have everything like you want it!  That's better!

i like all cakes... that's just it though, LIKE... i LOVE frosting.. like the kind for german chocolate... it's thick and amazing...

at a wedding i'd never pass up any kind of cake though.. not even fruit cake... or pudding cake... im fat... what is to be expected lol (tee hee hee)

I don't think I ever met a cake I didn't like.  Now, like Zee, I am a lot pickier about icings.

I've never had a Red Velvet cake, Zee.  Doesn't all that food coloring affect the taste?  Just does not look appetizing to me, but hey, it's cake.  How can it be bad?

  • Zayda said on Nov 15, 2007....
Mimi--Honestly, I don't think the food coloring impacts the flavor at all.
  • Fallyn said on Nov 15, 2007....
i don't care what kind of cake...so long as the icing on top isn't too sweet and it has something yummy like flavored cheesecake in the middle.....something to add to the moisture.
  • desertsienna2 said on Nov 15, 2007....
Whole-wheat carrot cake with apples and walnuts but no frosting, white angel or sponge cake, white icing
  • crybabylu said on Nov 15, 2007....
my favorite is chocolate devils food.  I would still eat the wedding cake whether I liked the flavor or not.

oh... i love cakes.. i am crazy about cakes... LOL... any flavor, any color as long as its cake... i dive to eat...

but there are times when there are fillings on the cake that tastes like cough syrup that i hate... i just scrape it off anyway...LOL...

one flavor that i seem to like more is super bitter sweet chocolate cake... hmmm so yummy... a touch of coffee on it too...

  • queenparanoia said on Nov 16, 2007....

    i love cake!!!

but my favorite is chocolate and mocha!!! =)

It is a bit sickly but I am fond on the chocolate mud cake!
  • tizzygirl said on Nov 16, 2007....
Ok, I'm not a big fan of eating any chocolate cake....but any other one is good....pound cake any flavor is the best, and cherry chip cake is pretty good....but I love to bake any cake!  In fact it's one of the things I'm quite talented at!!!  I have a lot of professional bakeware from the 30's too (it's been in the family) and I try and put it to good use anytime I have a chance!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 16, 2007....
ET - I'm not a big fan of coconut either and can't say I've ever had a wedding cake with coconut in or on it.  I had a piece of lemon cake last night with dinner, and it was good.

quietone - I am not a fan of white cake.  I might be if the filling and frosting was very good though.

wombat - cheesecake huh?  That actually sounds good, but makes for a messy cake cutting ceremony. (where they smash the cake into each other's faces)

AnaMay - Well, I have to admit I'm not very good at turning down cake either.

MissMimi - Red velvet made right is absolutely delicious.  I don't think I've ever tasted the dye.

Fallyn - I like the whip cream type frostings over the heavier ones.  I also like custard or meringe fillings.

preacherman - Pineapple?  Like upside down cake?  I've had those, though I prefer my pineapple fresh and raw.

sweet - you're pretty much talking about cappucino cake, and yes, it's devine!

queen - another fan of the chocolate and coffee flavors!! Yay!

    katie - [blinks] that's unreal

tizzy - well, you can't fight genetics can you?  I'd love to see the bakeware you have from the 30s.  I'd bet a lot of them are collectors.

rupert - Ohhhh, chocolate mud.  I like the homemade ones that are a heartbeak away from being pudding.  But very small pieces since it's very concentrated.

personally, i've yet to encounter a cake i don't like, esp at a wedding.

i honestly don't know if i have a favorite. zayda mentioned red velvet, which is a cake w/ which i've only very recently become familiar--it's my FIL's favorite, evidently, but i find that i like it, too.

sorry, u-i: i don't have a real fave, i'm afraid. to me, the bigger question is what do you get for a filling b/n layers (if your cake has layers): me, i'm partial to cannoli for that. :D

    ed
  • Fallyn said on Nov 16, 2007....
    ed, what's cannoli?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 16, 2007....
SW - Yummmmmy.  Cannoli.  Since the place I'm having the cake done is very Italian I'm pretty sure I could get a cannoli filling.  I hadn't thought of that as a filling.

Fallyn - Cannoli is God's way of apologizing for the calories in cake.  I'm not entirely sure what's in it, but it's sweet and creamy.
  • Fallyn said on Nov 16, 2007....
    UI. um...okay. *grin*

    1. Basic: Chocolate
    2. I'd never pass up a piece of wedding cake !!

It sounds like an outstanding plan to me.

    Am I invited?

    j/k

Good luck with the cake as well as the marriage!

  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 16, 2007....
Tainted - of course you're invited!  In fact the whole SC community is welcome.  Of course, due to budget constraints, you will have to pay for your own meal.

Oooh.....cake! I love cake. All kinds of cake :) The cake we were looking at (or I should say I was looking at) is dark chocolate with strawberry filling. I tasted this and it was the MOST yummy thing ever!!

But I am not picky about cakes. I will eat anything. The ONLY thing I don't like is artificial raspberry filling. Blech! Fresh real raspberries are yummy.....but the artificial flavor is yucky to me.

I would never turn down a cake at a wedding. How gauche!

Even a sardine cake, if a certain penguin friend of mine was getting married.

    :D

My favorite cake, though, is probably cheesecake. Of course that's actually more pie than cake.

    I've never had a cannoli, I think.

The other thing is -- 99 times out of 100, we don't order deserts at a restaurant. And I personally don't bake so and I personally am not that much into desserts or into sweets. Just not my thing, I guess.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 17, 2007....
TS: you clearly need more italians where you live. :>

    White cake with white frosting.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 18, 2007....
nurse - I agree that fresh fruit is the way to go.

TS - I don't order desserts in restaurants very often either.  I seem to run into all manner of dessert despite it though, and occaisionally will go to this bakery to pick up some tiramisu, cannoli, etc. which they also serve by the slice.

    desert - sounds very sweet.
  • NewGirl said on Nov 18, 2007....

I think probably spice cake.  I love love cake, but I hate frosting. Any good moist cake will do!!!

That pastry shop sounds amazing.  We dont have     anything like that around here.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 19, 2007....
NewGirl - I think I've had spice cake before.  It was pretty good, but I don't think I've ever seen it in a store and I don't back much anymore.  Yes, the shop is almost too amazing.  I ended up there this weekend for cookies.
  • TaintedAtBirth said on Nov 20, 2007....
"Even a sardine cake, if a certain penguin friend of mine was getting married."

    Ha !!
How many penguins are you acquainted with ?

    lol

    BTW
I think I'd have to pass on the sardine cake !!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 20, 2007....
Tainted - You never know who on SC is friends with penguins!  I'd pass on the sardine cake too.
  • dyingman said on Dec 06, 2007....
    Spice.
There was also a terrific walnut cream near my alma mater.
I'll pass on most wedding cake and I'd feel no compulsion to eat any of a nasty flavor or even a boring yellow with white icing for that matter.
    Tiramisu I'd have seconds.
My wedding cake had multiple layers with German chocolate, marble, and carrot.
It was gone before I got a piece!
Folks wanted a little of each flavor. We were sure we'd have leftovers. Nope! Guess again!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Dec 06, 2007....
dyingman - That's the way I feel about the cake too.  I want people to enjoy it so that they're eating it because it's good and not because it's expected of them.
