We're visiting my mothers cousin.
and we're talking, and i can't for the life of me remember how it got brought up.....but she says.

"I really do hope that i don't have to live next to any japanese people when i get to heaven."

and i blink.

and my sisters mouth drops to the floor.

and my mom turns red.

and my mom's cousins daughter says. "well mom. i really don't think you'll have to worry about that"

and me and my sister look at each other.....and just try SOOO hard not to laugh.

i don't believe the cousin got the joke.

*heavy sigh*
and my family wonders why i'm not a christian like them.

Not all Christians are like that though - I don't believe that a person's faith dictates whether they're racist at heart. It's often a product of inherited prejudice, yes.

    That said, ugh.

I did laugh at what the cousin's daughter said. :-D

LOL, you have "them" in your family too!!  I have given up trying to educate my relatives about true equality.  Generally speaking they're good people, but just very narrow minded in some regards.

ferny...i do understand that. there are more reasons than that why i'm not......

but i do get tired of the hypocrisy.  jesus wasn't a racist.

UI i sure do. and i think it's hilarious to watch as the younger generation is getting married the choices they've made in spouses and a few are mixed race....and the older generation COMPLETELY turning around when grandchildren are born. i find that hilarious.

my guy and i are different races. and it's funny when we go out together with all the kids. people kinda look funny at us...but. oh well. *grin*

I can tell you that sashimi (raw fish) smells very little and tastes really good, especially with a little soy sauce and wasabi. Your cousin would most likely be welcome to come over for green tea, yokan (sweet bean jelly) and a very lovely sashimi dinner. She shouldn't be so discriminating. Why didn't she want to live next door to any Japanese in Heaven?
  • Fallyn said on Nov 15, 2007....
i really couldn't answer that. it makes NO sense.
    *sigh*
it's so strange the different generations in my family........i can't think of a single one of my cousins that is racist and nearly all of their parents are.

How old was the person who didn't want to live near Japanese in Heaven? Was she in her 80s? Did she live through WW2? If not, why single them out? You can't hate them for sushi and Toyotas, can you?
  • Fallyn said on Nov 15, 2007....
she was in her 50's at this time.
no clue. makes no sense to me.
i'm beginning to think my whole family is retarded.

racism is a very hurtful thing, and I believe that a lot of people don't even know they are racists. But, i will say it is more of "human" flaw than whether a person is religious or not. (some religious people are racists and some are not, likewise some Non-religious people are racists and some are not).  Like I said,
It just seems to be a "human flaw".

oh yeah, Fallyn, this really is the preacherman talking this time.  Ha!
  • Fallyn said on Nov 15, 2007....
preacher, i know. in my family though...they are SUCH devote, bible thumping, missionary type christians...the hypocrisy just REALLY gets to me.

*grin*.......last night it was kinda hard to tell. :P
i have to admit though i was laughing sooo hard.

I think there is a certain type of person, a very tribal-oriented person, who is likely to be both a racist and a grade A Bible thumper missionary type Christian (or Muslim or any other "tribe"). Because racism and religious enthusiasm have some things in common - about identifying with "your people" as opposed to "others". It's the kind of Christian who is not attracted to Christianity for any spiritual benefit, but is attracted to it because it identifies who "our people" are, as differentiated from the worthless nobodies who are not in our tribe.

my family are seventh day adventists...and growing up there was DEFINITELY a cultural thing going on.......i was fourth generation in it......and it's like having your own cultural traditions and foods and practices and everything.

there are still some things i do that i grew up with......
like i feel something special on friday nights when it's time to wind down.....i don't play gospel anymore....but relaxing music,
    saturdays are break days.
i don't buy pork for myself or my family...though i'm no longer opposed to eating it.
i STILL don't have my ears pierced, though i do wear other jewelry.
i never did learn to dance.
i still feel a bit weird about going into movie theaters, bars, or even drinking in general. though i do enjoy a drink.
i now eat lobster and crab...though i still can't stomach other shellfish.

i think that's the entirety of the list...i probably forgot a few things though.
but yeah...SDA is WAY more a culture than just a religion.....in a lot of ways i'd compare it culturally on a daily basis...to being jewish......but without the long history full of tears.

ed. WELL? i mean........just the sheer stupidity of it.
*still shaking my head after all these years*
  • hotaka said on Nov 16, 2007....
You'll find religion oftens defines a culture. Most laws and traditions are based on religion. SDA started as a new way of looking at Christianity and came up with its own rules and traditions. After some time it does becaome more like a culture.
