I read an article on why some species eat their young.  This paragraph at the end of the article struck me.

"Klug said filial cannibalism could be a way to root out offspring that take too long to mature and therefore require a little too much parental care—this strategy would conserve the parents' energy for subsequent, faster-developing batches of young.

"They initially overproduce offspring and then later remove some of the inferior offspring," Klug explained.

General competition within a species for resources may also limit parents to the amount of energy and time they can spend raising their young, so they force their eggs to grow up fast or get eaten. "

I'm not a big supporter of cannibalism, but there were days when my kids were younger that this might have seemed like a reasonable option.  Even now I sometimes wonder if I should marinate my son before I pit roast his carcass. ;)

Once again, the animals show us that we only have to threaten to eat our children if they don't mature and move out on their own in a reasonable time.  The animals, it would seem, don't suffer from having 40 something year old children living in the basement.

Thoughts?

I have read this kind of thing before about animals eating their young...or killing the weaker ones off so the stronger have a greater chance at survival...but I don't think we as humans have quite reached that stage!  Although I am sure at some point and time...we have had that thought cross our minds!  LOL  I know I'd be a lot richer if it were so...

    quietone - I know I'd be a lot richer if I were a cannibal. :)

Ah, dear unique, you tug at my heart speaking of pit roasting your son. I have two sons I could have skewered four score times  (lengthly bow)....

My wife told me a short time ago about a poll asking parents their number one complaint in raising kids and it was they won't leave home!!

BTV - About 2 years ago I made sure to mention to my children in every conversation that I loved them and that they needed to leave home as soon as possible.  The latter is usually said in a joking way, but it's good to "plant the seed" as it were.  Seriously, I think parents do harm to children they allow to stay at home past a certain age.

I forgot to tell you that my wife would have played the piano for the skewerings with an evil grin on her face.

BTV - She sounds like my kind of woman.  At least you're on the same page.

i suppose that through the cold, infelxible lens of survival that this makes some measure of sense. but still...ugh!

    u-i, you're a very funny lady. :>

SW - I hope you know that I would never seriously consider eating my children.  Just at random moments does this seem remotely viable.  However, try licking someone some time and see how quickly they beat a hasty retreat! (childhood coping tactic learned at about 6 y.o.)

heh...well, the article does add a scary-as-heck subtext to the "he/she's so cute i could eat him right up!", doesn't it? :>

SW - I've always thought that particular phrase was a little strange.  My own mother would "playfully nip" at a baby's feet while playing with them.  It made me shutter.

so long as she didn't read to you (or them) often about hansel & gretel and a certain cook pot, i think that's OK...right?

SW - LOL!! She loved the Hansel and Gretel story.  I did much to keep her away from my own children when they were very small.

I'm sorry, but I'm still trying to stop laughing over, "I'm not a big supporter of cannibalism..." but it's nice to see that you don't judge those who are big supporters. I mean, cannibals are people too, right?

I have to say that my parents threatened me with all sorts of strange things over the years, but neither of them ever said they were going to marinate my carcass and eat it. But if they did, I probably would have found that really funny.

I love my children dearly and still regret the days they grew up and left home. On the other hand there were days I truly believed in retroactive birth control. Thems the joys of being a parent.

ET - well you know, I try not to judge people by what (and who) they eat.

botoni - I'm looking forward to the day that I will regret the day they leave home.

D6fer - I can tell you're in the midst of the child rearing.  No one appreciates the thought of child roast more than the tired parent.

queen - I have been lucky that so far all my pets have raised all of their litters.

    destiny - that's what I'm here for.
