I think its a distortion of the light reflected in the lens of the camera....

    Very pretty though....

    but then.......strange things happen in your beautiful land, Skald... {hug}

Lovely photo, and I agree with Ginger about the light reflecting on the camera lens.

Hi girls they had a name for this that is so Icelandic that I can not translate but the first part of the word is wolf and the last crises but it means something else. Said to be some phenomenon. I don't know your explanations sound good.  Yes seem to be right.

Nice picture, it looks like a car commercial.
  • rupert7 said on Nov 11, 2007....
skald -  they are wrong! You took this on your home planet didn't you?  lol (joke)

    It is strange and beautiful!
  • skald said on Nov 11, 2007....

Hey guys there were three suns to be seen and they are formed by ice Christalles. This was taken on a heath. High country.
  • Actorguy said on Nov 11, 2007....
Wow! you mean this is not caused by the camera lens but looks this way in real life?  Incredible!
  • queenparanoia said on Nov 11, 2007....
    that looks so cool!!! =)
  • Battycat said on Nov 11, 2007....
     Wow - Fantastic picture :-)
  • kelly said on Nov 11, 2007....
The effect is known as "sun dogs."  At least here in the US.  I used to see it often during the winter when I lived in the midwest.

Your posted picture is a really stunning example, however.

It's beautiful!  Has it been snowing there for long now?
    Daily
  • hotaka said on Nov 12, 2007....
I'm glad kelly knew what it was. Otherwise I would have to say so. I have seen them myself but not so strong and clear. I once saw an amazing photo from Greenland of sundogs. I'd give you the technical explanation but at this point I'd be afraid of mixing up refracting light with defracting light on planar ice crystals.

Btw, skald, the moment I saw the title of this post I knew what the photo would be. :)

Actorguy. Yes Actorguy. Thanks for the comment
    Queen.  Yes doesn't it?
Battycat.  i think so too, It's not mine.
Kelly. Thanks for the word. As we call it Wolfscrises it is so very understandable to me that you call it sundogs.
Daily.  Hello, good to see you I was wondering about you. No, it has not been snoing here. Might have been on that moor hight up. It had snowed when we  came home on the 28th and it lasted 2 days. Now the weather is mild for this time a year.
Hotaka. I w as also glad that Kelly told me. it makes sense to me as we call it Wolfs crises. I read the technical explanation last evening but I could not repeat it in  English only that it is
formed by ice Christals  in th air.  I have never seen it my self you are lucky and so is Kelly. Thanks Hotaka

  • fearing said on Nov 12, 2007....
Skald, I thought it was a reflection of light also and then read your comment that it looked this way in real life.  Cool!
  • quietone said on Nov 12, 2007....
It does look like it is created from the lens on the camera...but if it is not...it is pretty fantastic..either way its cool.  Thanks skald
  • Mamie said on Nov 12, 2007....

I'm not an expert, but that looks like glare off the lense or something.

  • faulty_perfection said on Nov 12, 2007....
Glare or not .... it looks pretty cool.
  • skald said on Nov 12, 2007....
Uniquely.  It is not. It is a natural  phenomena  which is caused by some ice Crystalles in the air. Kelly told me the English name of this which is sun dogs we call this Wolfs crises.
Faulty perfection. Hi to you. Yes it is pretty cool.
