I downloaded Opera a few months ago to test out a javascript thing that I had written, but then I never really used it for anything else. It just kind of sat there in my quicklaunch tray like some of the other forgotten and forlorn icons, saying to itself, "Pck me! Pick me!" whenever I would move the mouse nearby to pick a more favored program, such as Firefox.

So I've determined to use Opera from home for the next week or so. I've already been using it for a few hours. I still need to use some of its features.

Right now, while it seemed pretty fast when I started it up, its become a bit sluggish and is using quite a bit of RAM -- just over 200MB right now with 7 tabs open. Of course, I don't have FireFox's numbers to compare to it, I know that I've had FF up to almost a Gig (and my comp only has 512MB) and I've had a few crashes lately, but still.

Oh, and I have to type in my own HTML on SoulCast. That's a bit of a negative, but not too much.

You know, I've been having Firefox crashes lately too, but I still like it a tad bit better than Opera.

I used Opera for years though, with hardly any hangups. I still like it, but I went "Oooh, shiny!" when Firefox came out and I haven't been back.

i'm glad you're trying it out, TS. as you know, i like it a great deal. for me it simply outperforms firefox: renders faster, i prefer the placement of the tabs and i find the keyboard shortcuts more intuitive.

i've seen opera get as high as a quarter gig, but when i see it's that bad, i re-start the app. like i said, for me it's all about the performance so when that starts taking a hit...

This may not be the right place to make this kind of comment but here goes.

For years I raged against the monopoly of Microsoft. I tried my best to get around the intentional limitation that are apparent when trying to use other software in a Microsoft environment. My last attempt was doing a Linux/Windows dual install that went catastrophically awry. I somehow ended up wiping the hard disk clean with a Linux OS installed.

How's that working out for you? Because I've had similar experiences -- and I've been futzing with Linux on-and-off since 1996.

I currently have a program called VirtualBox in which I can run a Linux session under Windows much more easily than in a dual-boot situation.

I think that VirtualBox also works under Linux and you can put Windows on it.

First, I forgot to go into Opera instead of Firefox just now when I checked my email. But I did before I came here.

But then in order to read one of bloc's most recent posts, I still had to go into Firefox to view the video.

Is Opera incapable of viewing Youtube videos?

weird--i've been. perhaps you need to check your preferences?

I'll have to check -- I haven't done anything with the prefs yet. For several days I had the Opera tutorial page open, but I never did finish reading it.

    RTFM, man!

Okay, videos actually do seem to work. Even without RTFM. I just have to click an extra time on embedded videos.

For a web browser, or even for most general programs, one shouldn't have to "RTFM" you know...

So... I switched back to Firefox.

    Opera pluses:
    • Starts up fast.
    • Fast rendering if you only have a few tabs open.
    • I like the magic wand. I don't usually have browsers memorize my passwords but I found this to be convenient.
    • I liked Opera's speed dial -- very cool. Not perfect though -- I could access it either by opening a new tab or by typing a number from 1-9 in the address bar. I didn't see a menu option for it though...

Why I went back to Firefox:
    • It may be slower on individual pages, but it is pretty consistent with several tabs open.
    • I don't have to manually enter HTML in a comment box. Usually.
Okay, so that's it. I still experience slowdowns or crashes with FF, but they had a different character than Opera's slowdowns which also frustrated me. I think that I will mainly miss the magic wand and the speed dial though.

I may go back at some later date.

how many tabs do you keep open, TS? and i gotta confess, i'm unfamiliar w/ the speed dial feature you speak of. i do use the keyboard shortcuts for bookmarks, which i really dig (and resent not having in 'fox).

Usually between 3-7 tabs. Sometimes more but not usually.

I only have two tabs open now, but I've just gotten started for the evening.

I think the "speed dial" is a new feature in the latest version of Opera -- v9.24 build 8816. Whenever you open a new tab you get a picture like a phone keypad with a thumbnail picture of your nine "speed dial" favorites.

Here's a (flash) demo on the Opera site: http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/flash/speeddial/

One other thing that I've grown to like about FF (but that I always hated in word processors): automatic spellcheck with the wiggly red line.

I'll probably try it again. I'm just returning to the familiar, but I was glad to finally actually road test it.

o! is that what that thing is? heh...i installed it on the desktop but not the laptop and it was confusing the hell out of me. :>

i routinely run with 4-6, myself: 3 here, 1 elsewhere and research-related other tab(s) as needed.

btw, note that 'fox 3 is now in beta. :>
