so i woke up around 3:30 or so this morning. it's really kinda honking me off, although i'm happy to report that this is the first time in a while that it's happened to me.

i think i'm gonna be hurting for a nap later. ah, well.

naturally, this becomes fodder for a poll: when you guys find yourselves awake at annoyingly inconvenient hours and unable to get back to sleep, how do you keep yourselves entertained?

me, i show up here and elsewhere online.

    Ugh to that wakeup.

I usually have more trouble initially getting to sleep than I do with wakings after that. Maybe I don't wake up because I'm so friggin' exhausted by the time I get to sleep the first time. :-D

Anyway, if I can't sleep, I putter around here and at my other online haunts, mess with photos in Photoshop, and chat with any other unfortunate souls still on AIM at that hour - though the more wonked I am, the less that appeals.

Ed- If I had insomnia now I'd also probably go on SC, but haven't had much of a problem with it since being here. However, if it strikes me I would split the time in those lonely hours between being on SC and doing what I used to and that is making a pot of coffee and going to the front yard with the dogs.

They loved it when I had insomnia.

You are all gonna laugh, but if I can't sleep, I've found the ABSOLUTE BEST REMEDY for sleeplessness:

    Have an ORGASM!

Assuming I need a bit more stimulation, I pop in a porn DVD or surf porn online for a short while ; do the deed; and then I'm back to dreamland in no time. If I had a man in my life, I'd pop him in instead. ;)

I do the following but not in any particular order and not each every time I have insomnia:
    - make a cup of hot Malt Ovaltine
    - make a cup of Sweet Dreams or Sleepytime tea (If I take this before I go to bed, I usually stay asleep. I don't always remember).
    - write in my journal
    - re-read sexy notes and masturbate--masturbating and having an orgasm ALWAYS relaxes me and I get back to sleep
    - lying awake for hours thinking of things I have to do or about people
    - get online somewhere else on the Net

Sometimes if I really need to get some sleep, I pray. As weird as it sounds. I actually did last night because I wasn't able to sleep. I was tossing and turning, worrying about bills, my car, and certain family members of mine so I couldn't sleep. Plus I'm sick and all stuffed up, which doesn't help all that much either.

It was 1:47 a.m., and I was still laying there. I began to pray for God to help calm my thoughts and heart. It always seems to help and settle me down.

If I am just up during the weekend, I definitely play on the internet. I come to SC, get on my email, and sometimes just look up random things that I'm curious about. And umm... I uh.... also play........ Age of Empires III.... But don't tell anyone k?

I have insomnia so this is something I deal with all the time.  I often spend what time I do sleep right here in this rocking chair.  Seriously.

I will get up and go to work.  It is actually when I do my best writing.   About two hours into it, I am not ready to go to bed but I will suddenly wake up and find that I lost an hour or thirty minutes.  It is one of the reasons that I use a high backed wing rocker instead of an office or desk chair.  It is big, wide and comfy.  I can curl my legs under me, lay my head to one side and I am out for a bit.

Hmmm...sounds it would be a good time to work on my great American novel:

    Trout Smacking in America !!!

Seriously?  I read the Bible (but often I find this stimulating...which can get me wired) or I watch old movies on TV.  Preferably pre-1970.  I can find comfort in both, each in their own way.  But the first thing I always do is check to see if I am supposed to be praying for someone.  (Intercessory prayer and all.  : )  When I am finished praying, I find that I can go instantly back to sleep.

    Interesting post Ed.

I hate waking up early (I rarely seem to have trouble falling asleep). In fact, I woke up this morning between 1am and 2:30am but I refused to do what I normally do.

Sometimes I wake up around 3-3:30am and I'll turn on the TV and find something interesting. Sometimes the extra noise helps me go to sleep but more often than not I get into whatever show is on (news, history, PBS, movie, etc.) and it becomes a feedback loop.

Getting out of bed really isn't an option. Like ed said, for me it's a sign of surrender. Plus it is likely to wake up my wife and make her miserable too.

I play a really silly word game using the alphabet, names (boys and girls), locations, and items. Sound complicated?  Not really.  Here's an example:

    A) "Anna and Aaron live in Australia and sell Apples"
    B) "Brittany and Bob live in Boston and sell brown baby buggy bumpers"
    C) "Carol and Carlos live in California and sell crazy cartoon books"

    D, E, F, etc.

I think up the names really fast--whatever comes to mind. I rarely get through the alphabet, but I can get frustrated trying to come up with words for some of the vowels.

If all else fails, I also masturbate.  But not while playing the alphabet game!

My insomnia gives me a million excuses of things to do at night. Of course the best things happen if my girlfriend is there for the night and after "activity" I will be physically tired, plus sex releases a natural tranquilizer into your body... so that's a big plus. I've found tons of random facebook games, and other internet stuff, and then I've also started my own insomnia blog that you can see here, http://anatomyofinsomnia.blogspot.com/
