I experienced some phantom pain again today where my toe used to be.  I hadn't experienced anything this painful until today.  At first I was wracking my brain, wondering what I could have done to hurt myself then I realized where the pain was coming from.

It went on all day until I discovered by accident what was triggering it.  I went for a car ride with the heater blasting my feet.  When they warmed up, the phantom pain disappeared.

Isn't that strange?

Maybe it has something to do with nerve endings.  I don't know.  All I do know is that the pain was very real.  It was nagging.  Tylenol wouldn't touch it.  It was crazy.

At least I know what to do next time.  I'll get my feet warm and see if it solves the problem again.

That is kind of strange, but if it helps, then keep your feet warm.  Sounds good to me, anyway...maybe it is telling us to keep our hearts warm, to ward off "phantom pain" of the soul...lol.

I will lend you some of my vast amount of socks from my top drawer.....

CW, phantom pain is very real. Although I ve not experienced it myself I have been with friends who have had it. I suggest you ask your MD to refer you to a pain control clinic or specialist. There are ways to deal with it. Good luck.

my dad's best friend had both legs amputated at the knee......he got pain in his "toes" all the time that tylenol couldn't touch. .....it is the nerve endings.

    wombat,
Keeping my heart warm might have a lot to do with it.  :-)

    queen,
When I said "blasted heat" I meant that I focused the heat vent toward the floor board.  The warm air directed that way was what did the trick.  I didn't have my feet in any harm's way.  :-)

    botoni,
If it keeps up, I will ask the doctor about it.  I've only experienced it twice so far. Today is much better.

    Fallyn,
I suspected it was the nerve endings.  Glad to know I'm not crazy.  I switched over to Advil before bed and no pain at all this morning.

    Ed,
Thanks.  It's one of those you never think about until it happens to you.

that phantom pain has got to be wierd.  I am glad that the heat helped it.

Oh this is awful for you. I have heard about it and I don't think this can be explained.

CW I get neuropathic pain in a few places which sounds a little like the phantom pain you describe. I often find it's particularly bad if I'm cold so keeping warm is important.

I'm glad you found a way to stop the pain.

    quietone,
It is a little weird.  I'll get used to it though.

    skald,
It really is hard to explain. I will need to learn to deal with it.

    Alyss,
Thanks for the link.  :-)  It seems to be better today.

I've heard of phantom pain too, but didn't realize that a pain reliever didn't help.  How inconvenient!  I'm glad you figured out how to take care of it.  It makes sense that when you're warm (and assuming comfortable) that you're able to "let go" of the pain.

I'm so glad you may have found the key to turning that pain off. Keep up the good work.

    skald,
Thank you for being so caring.

    UI,
It is the strangest thing.  Tylenol didn't help.  Advil seemed too in combination with the heat.  I don't know if it's all in my mind or what.

    lfb,
    Thanks.  I keep trying.
