Who's reading cornflakegirl (33):
a friend of mine and her husband recently bought a beautiful new home in central new jersey and i went there to meet with a few friends last night. we had a BBQ/housewarming/farewell party for a girl who is moving to GA with her boyfriend. i made a walnut-roasted red pepper dip, and my other friends brought along some salads, appetizers, drinks, desserts. we sat on the deck and drank some wine, ate some cheese, and chatted til the sun set. it was lovely.

i wore a short jeans skirt and tank top and was engaged in a discussion about the middle east conflict when all of a sudden, i felt a light pinch on my upper inner thigh. i investigated and upon close inspection, it didn't appear to be anything more than a red spot. but as the hours passed, it became very itchy and irritated. it also grew in size, and is currently the size of a small golf ball (no kidding). i have a few other welts on my back and have never seen mosquito bites this size. the ones on my back don't bother me as much, but this one on my thigh seems to be getting worse.

my friends have a beautiful backyard that leads into a nature preserve, and i'm wondering if there are some strange, bigger-than-life mosquitos that swarm there. i also know they have a neighbor who hasn't been present for the past 6 months and his lawn is overgrown with grass, weeds, and bushes. who knows what is lurking in there.

has anyone else had run-ins with strange killer mosquitos this summer? also, i don't have any calamine around the apartment (although if this continues i will run out and get some), are there any home remedies i could whip up and apply?

There really are no home remedies that will make mosquito bites tolerable. Prevention is the best medicine.

may sound strange but when i was little we always rubbed our own spit onto the mosquito bite! Believe it or not it temporarily relieved the itching! my grandma told me to lick my finger then rub it on the bite. dont spit on it and get all sloppy or anything! ker yuk. p.s. why would you subscribe to a person and not read the blogs? my # of reads didn't change after you subscribed. just curious...

hi bipolarbear, i read a comment you posted to someone's blog and liked what you had to say but didn't have the time to read through your blogs then. so i subscribed to you, so i wouldn't forget your name. i don't subscribe to every user on soulcast (as i'm sure you've noticed) but had every intention of reading your blogs at my leisure. i still plan on doing it, just need to sit down and go through them! :)

So i know you posted this a while back, but just in case it ever happens again.... hairspray.

Won't necessarily make it go away (try the baking soda paste for that) but it will make it itch alot less.

Central Florida deals with a buttload of mosquitos every year, and I've lived here for roughly 25 years.

    Believe me.. hairspray.

That mosquito bite story was very similar to one told to me by my sister on the telephone and we're in England. That was a barbecue too. The week before she had disturbed a wasps nest and got stung. On this occasion it was mosquiitos and she had an allergic reaction to the bites. Unless, it's a new breed that's invading the world. She's off in a camper now for a couple of weeks - she'll probably get bitten again. I bought her a thing that attracts and electrocutes them! But so far, I haven't seen her to give it to her.
