In another post a few days back, I mentioned that I need socks, and that I have so few because I don't wear them for most of the year. It's pretty warm here, and I'm just not a sock person in general. (Yes, I'm barefooted right now.)

I don't like socks because they tend to make me warmer (which I realize is supposed to happen :-p but I tend to get overwarm easily) and they're generally pretty fugly. I mean, not that feet are necessarily pretty, but socks are just so...sock-y and bland-looking. There's just no personality in a pair of white tube socks.

When I do wear socks, I'm pretty picky about what sort they are. Plain white socks make me feel boring and invisible. What's the point of a wardrobe that's "you" if you complete it with dull socks and whatever shoes you happen to have?

Ankle socks drive me crazy because my shoes tend to try to eat them anyway, and if they're already just at my ankles, it feels like I constantly need to pull them up. (No, I don't walk around with socks up to my knees - I'd fold them over to a few inches above my ankle before I'd do that.) Also, in general I don't want you to see my legs, so there'd better not be any skin between pant hem and socks, even if I'm sitting down with my legs crossed or whatever - not being short, I sometimes have issues with pant length, which already bugs me. Short socks make it worse.

I think the worst sock trend I've ever seen (IMO) is the dreadful toe sock thing. Have you seen them? They're gloves for your feet. While I approve of the funky colors and interesting designs on most of them, I utterly fail to understand why anyone would want to wear them. I don't want my toes all individually shoved into mini-socks of their own. I had a pair of these awful things and gave up on them after one day. Maybe I have weird feet - that wouldn't surprise me. :-D

Mr._Box informed me that they even have scented socks. Wow! I don't think I want any of those. DH's dirty socks have plenty of scent, thanks. :-D

So what do I like when it comes to socks?

Fuzzy (they must be fuzzy!), colorful, comfortable slipper socks! They're cozy on days that even I will admit are cold, they stand out, and they make my inner child grin. I have a pair (somewhere) that make me look like I switched feet with Cookie Monster. I have matching gloves. See? I'm grinning already, just thinking about them. :)

It's too bad that socks tend to lose their mates so easily and so often. You know what song that brings to mind:

"Where do my socks go
When I put 'em in the dryer
Do they escape down some black hole
Or get zapped in cosmic fire?
Do they escape? Do they turn to lint?
I don't want 'em back
I just wanna know where they went!
Tell me, where do my socks go
When I put 'em in the dryer?"
(Ray Stevens)

What about you? What sort of socks do you wear (and what kinds do you prefer/dislike, in case what you wear is neither of those)?

Oh good, I was afraid I was just crazy on that one.

Wait...you agreeing doesn't really change that, does it? :-D

    The much anticipated sock post.

Truthfully I really only wear white or black socks. Cotton. Polyester dress socks make my feet smell like cheese.

I prefer to be barefoot though. I never wear socks around the house unless it happens to be incredibly cold. Which is rare around here.

Those socks with the toes are an abomination. My wife bought some just to see what they were like and she decided her toes were not made to be separated by material. It was uncomfortable. And looked ridiculous too.

I wear Medi Peds to work because they have no seam at the toe to irritate the skin.  At home I don't wear socks, just slippers because the tile is cold.
My husband wears black socks, never white, and never sneakers. He's such an old man!
So if you see a tall guy walking past your house with a Yankee cap, black guinea tee (I think they call them "wife beaters" now...horrible name!), jeans shorts, black socks, and dress shoes, please don't call the police.  It's just my husband, getting his exercise.

a roomate i had at one point was writing a childrens story...

about the monster in the dryer that stole socks, unraveled them and knitted them into extra pairs of underwear.

we convinced her not to....cause we didn't think it was an appropriate for children version of where an extra pair of underwear may have come from.

I like bright, chunky-topped colored socks with tennis shoes and shorts, but in general I just wear the plain white ones.

I hate the sock-eating monster!  I lay the "left-overs" on top of the dryer and wait for their mates to re-appear. They never all show up at the same time...  (most of the time, they are tucked into fitted sheet corners when I make the bed--but sometimes they are hiding in the sheets with other articles of clothing before laundry day...ha...)

    Mr_Box: Did I do ok? :)

You and your wife are smart people, sock-wise.

Twyla: Aww, he just sounds likeable. :) (I hate the term "wife beaters" too, but I guess they forgot to ask us!)

Fallyn: At first I was thinking "But then the kids will be afraid of the dryer monster!" and then I read the rest of your comment and -- yeah. Not appropriate on a whole other level. ;-)

wombat: I do that too! (Laying the socks out, hoping the mates will turn up...) It never seems to work.

I have a dating service in mind for unmatched socks.   I actually have a basket in the laundry closet that is constantly holding a meet-and-greet for newcomers.

Oh Infernal.  You will think I'm boring.  I like the white athletic socks.  I even wear them to bed in the winter.  I very rarely go barefoot.

    I feel the same way

infernal....no kidding....i think the whole thing was inspired by a pair of mens underwear we found left over from the dryer and not a clue where it came from...both our guys wore boxers. ....kinda scary. :P

I have a drawer full of odd sox! None of them match with anything! Tell me - how does that happen?

I'm pretty boring and basic when it comes to socks. I usually just buy white sport socks. Not the really long ones that go to your knee, but not the ankle kind either. The middle length kind. And I never actually pull them all the way up.

I've seen those weird feet gloves before and I always thought they were a joke! I never realized someone would actually buy them and wear them. I think they'd be really annoying. And I too, hate when socks disappear in the dryer. It never fails!

Well I always need socks. It not so warm here that you go without them and about when it is very warm I need them in my shoes or sandals otherwise I feel like I am sticking to the shoes and I don't like that.

I have done a lot of research into socks.  My daughter has a syndrome that makes it difficult for her to wear clothes.  She is less able to block out the sensation of clothes against her skin like we normally do.  It's like having an itch, all the time.  At one point she broke into hives when I made her wear sweat pants with elastic at the ankles.  All in the mind, but it manifested into hives she was so distressed about it.  It is getting better with age, but she still has an incredibly hard time finding clothes of all kinds.  So, can you imagine buying socks for such a creature?!!

I did find her some very soft seamless socks that she wears when it's very very cold.  Otherwise it's flip flops year round.  For myself I wear basic black above the ankle socks to work and fluffy sock slippers at home when it's cold.  I did buy a pair of tabi socks recently (only the toe is seperated) that I like to wear with my flip flops so that I can wear them longer throughout the year.  I avoid "spare sock syndrom" by buying multiple pairs of each sock so that if one goes on a walkabout that I can pair it up with another of the sets.

socks drive me crazy!!!   that poem is soooo true!!  always always always socks go missing....  ya know how bad it is (or maybe this just says how sad I am!! lol )  but if I do a load of washing and dont have an odd sock....(rare)  I GET EXCITED!!
seriously there is more chance of winning the lottery than all the socks still paired up after a wash!!!  :-)
I wear any socks, usually odd ones!!
    :-) xx
