  I tend to shorten the usernames of most SCers, especially those with particularly long ones and those I interact with regularly (I have nicknames for almost everyone I know IRL - it's one of those not-so-awkward ways to show affection, IMO). I also tend to call people by name when they give it (Kyle, ed, Natalie, etc.).
  
  There are a few SCers I have nicknames for that aren't strictly abbreviations - hotaka is hottie, botoni is bottie, wombat is wombie, ed is all kinds of variations on a silver tracks/fish theme...
  
  I love having nicknames, too - it feels friendlier somehow. There's not much I wouldn't answer to, especially when the person using it is a good friend. I have no idea what the "perfect" pet name for me would be.

  I call you Destiny because I kind of like it. Ginger I call Ginger as I don't get her name right and I think Ginger is Cute. Polar I call Polar rather than Polarcakes. Rupert is Rube now and I could go on and on. Then as I am not a native English speaker and I sometimes shorten names I wonder if I do something wrong. You know saying making some bad name out of the name.
  I really don't think mine can be shortened. Some try a pet name an then lengthen it. lol

  I dont so much mind my name on here being shortened, however once my name on another site was mfgdpos, and everyone would shorten it to mf. and as I would be in a chat room or elsewhere I would be in a good conversation and then someone would call me that, and forgetting it was part of my sn, I would think people were getting mad at me for some reason!

  I guess I never wondered if a nicname I came up with was offensive.  I always figured someone would say something to me if they didn't like it.  I do abbreviate a lot of them.  Bot, SL, SW, BTV, ET, nurse, Destiny to name a few.
   
  I'm considering combining Evil_Twin and nursecutie like they do the hollywood couples.  How about Evilnurse, Evilcutie, nurseTwin or cutieTwin?
   
  I think as long as nicnames are used with affection I'm all for it.  I think it's smart for people to use u-i or unique instead of the whole long thing.

  secret or SL are the ones people use most.
   
  funny, but i'm not as good at shortening others---
  normally i just use the first part of a name- like Alien, or beyond, or ginger, or daily or destiny for you....sometimes i use initials....like CW or TNP...
  it's easier to shorten the name for people you know a little bit- but i'll admit most of the time it's just laziness on my part!

  I don't mind people having nicknames for me. I think the one that most people use, is the one that makes me laugh every time I see it. E_T. Because I can't help but think of the movie ET. It doesn't bother me at all though. But everyone can call me Kyle if they want.
  
  Mostly I abbreviate names here if they're too long. I call you Des all the time because Destinydiva is too long! But it never occurred to me that anyone would care if I shortened or abbreviated their names. I don't have any actual pet names for other Soulcasters though. Except for Nat :-)

  I don't mind it all.
  I do it because I am a terrible typist. Also, for the more difficult names or the ones with odd spellings and/or numerals it's easier to do a shortened nickname.
  Too, I've noticed since being on the Net so much I've gotten to be a lazy writer and/or I write informally. I use a lot of shortened, abbreviated or slang terms.

  I've only been here a short time, but I've got nicknames for just about everyone. Especially Miss Gingery-Soul.

  I enjoy calling people Mr. or Miss or Ms. followed by their user name. I'm strange like that.

  I certainly hope I've offended no one. I like nicknames. They make things seem more personal.

  My favorite nickname I've been given here is a tie between Sexy Boxy and Boxalicious.

  i tend to shorten people's usernames when they're a big long to type, often using initials in some cases (e.g., gingersoul --> GS) whereas with others, a shortened form (e.g., the infernal optimist --> infernal). i don't follow any real rhyme or reason to which names i abbreviate vs which ones i shorten, i don't think, although as a rule i tend to abbreviate rather than shorten.
  
  me, i prefer to go by "ed" since let's face it, it's quicker to type than "silverswhisper" and as short as "SW". :> it also has the merit of you know...being my name. :>

  As for GIVING nicknames, I'm like most. It's usually initials or a shortened version of a moniker that I use to refer to my fellow Soul Casters, however, the only soulcaster I ever called a nickname out of character was GhostBlogger... I welcomed his only post by saying "Welcome, Oh Apparitionous One." He seemed to like that a lot. Said it sounded Regal. ;) LOL.
  
  Other than that, nah, it's just standard moniker crunching for me.

  destinydiva!  I had tried for over a half hour to come up with a name that noone had already had and I was getting frusterated, so I finally said (and I am quite vulgur at times) said out loud to myself. you gd mf pos  (obviously abbreviated for what I REALLY said) and just put them all together and that was my new sn, funny noone else had thought of it! lol
