A Fox news poll shows that a majority of Americans think we should "Throw the bums out" but interestingly enough when posed the same question about their own representative, their opinions change.

This is the problem with the average American today....we expect everyone else to make the sacrifice....to pay the bill....etc.

I have had a "throw the bums out" attitude for some time....last election I voted against both of my representatives, one democrat, one republican......both stayed in unfortunately.

How can you send a message to our political leaders, if you are not willing to make that sacrifice?

I guess I should pose the same questions to soulcasters.

    1. Do you think that we need to get rid of all or most of our current representatives?

    2. What about your representatives....should they be replaced?

Well we all like to think that we voted for the person who is best for the job.  I don't know about the rest of you but I stopped voting for inferior Sally because Timmy called me a name last week sometime in grade school.  So of course we expect "others" to make the sacrifice.

    1. I doubt most people know enough about most representives to make any sort of educated statement.

    2. Yeah.

I've seen elsewhere that the retention rate for incumbents in Congress is something like 90% or better. I guess that just speaks for the power of incumbency and the name recognition that comes with it. Most people pay very little attention to political news and so when it comes time to vote - if they vote at all - people often make their decision based on very flimsy grounds.

I have voted against my current representative every election including the one in which he was voted into office. Yes, he's a Republican and I don't care for his politics, but more importantly he has shown that he just doesn't have much respect for common people.

Lionel....just one rep.....I'm talking house and senate
  • lioneljay said on Nov 05, 2007....
D6, last I heard it's illegal for me to vote against your congress critters. All I can do is try to get rid of my own.
  • D6fer said on Nov 05, 2007....
    huh? :/
  • lioneljay said on Nov 06, 2007....
Ah, I think I get your drift now, D6. I rather like one of my senators (Obama) but have been a little disappointed lately by Durbin. We'll have to see what his opposition looks like when he next runs for reelection.

As for how we could incite a national throw-the-bums-out campaign, it could start with bloggers (and I can tell you that a lot of the folks who blog at Daily Kos are steaming about the lousy performance of the Dems right now).
  • crybabylu said on Nov 06, 2007....
I think their terms should be limited.
  • D6fer said on Nov 06, 2007....

Lioneljay....would you give up Obama to get rid of the rest though?

Crybabylu.....I agree to the extent that we should limit their terms for them....by voting them out!

  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 06, 2007....
Assuming you like Obama what good comes of giving him up to get rid of the rest?  I mean maybe if you could somehow garuntee that the next batch would be good but I don't see how that is possible (if it was all the bad ones would be gone by now and only the good ones would be left)

So what you are asking is if we would throw the baby out with the bathwater.
  • D6fer said on Nov 06, 2007....
I think that a complete shake up would send a message to all politicians....the more that get booted the better....I personally voted against both my representatives....one of each party...one I liked, the other I didn't.
  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 06, 2007....
But what is the point?  I mean if the good politicians who are doing their jobs and looking out for you and staying away from corruption get booted why is the next batch going to do a good job.

It's bad enough that there is already a perception that all politicans are corrupt, if you punish however many are good you'll pretty much be garunteeing that no good people ever get in ever again
  • D6fer said on Nov 07, 2007....
good politicians?....do we have some of them? ;p
  • lioneljay said on Nov 08, 2007....
D6, no, I would not give up Obama in order to rid the Congress of the corrupt and the infirm. However, that is my big concern right now: the infirm. We, as a country, clearly sent a message with the 2006 elections that we wanted to do things differently. But it just hasn't happened. The Dems have held a number of inquiries but haven't actually punished anyone for the administration's various misdeeds. They have capitulated over every issue up to date, and there is no sign that this will stop.
  • D6fer said on Nov 08, 2007....
I agree.....now we have to send another message....and flip flop the congress again.....2 or three elections in a row, and maybe they will get the picture.

Whenever I come across these incidents in American history, I have continued to wonder if they were just mere coincidence or...
Science and propaganda merge in global warming "debate."...

And no one even seems to care.

Even Chris Mathews at MSNBC is starting to question Obama.
