silverwhisper's tags:
i was writing up my last blog entry and doing a little tag research, to see what tags have been used for some key ideas relating to that blog entry (politics, voting, e-voting, diebold) when i realized that i had a possible poll question.

when you write a blog entry, how do you determine what tags you will use? what factors are a part of that decision-making process for you? do you have a set of tags you habitually use and just apply those, do you do something else?

Since my titles and descriptions are sometimes a tad obscure about the actual content, I try to make the tags pretty straightforward: sex, erotica, relationships, etc. I like single-word tags.

I pretty much pick out a few key themes in my post and use those as tags. I usually only list 3of them, even though you can have more. Most of my posts aren't bursting with substance and 3 tags are plenty to describe them.

I have used the site SoulCast referred us to in order to search for the days most viewed tags in different subject areas.  Mostly however, my posts tend to come when I have a lot of stuff stuck in my head and the tags just jump out like my posts.  That's also why some of them are totally not logical.  For instance, I tagged one "lollipop masturbation" and while I might be crazy enough to type that into a search engine, most people wouldn't think to - LOL!!!
  • wombat said on Nov 01, 2007....
I usually use one or two that relate, but also find my existing ones will do just as well!  I think I have a theme going.....

exhibit c: i agree w/ you re: making tags straightforward.

kyle: that's more o less, at least in terms of practice, what exhibit c said, i think. i'm curious why you don't use more tags, and i think that substance is in the mind of the reader. you write about a loving relationship, and that makes for some very compelling content. at the end of the day, isn't love what makes life worth living? IMV, that's some pretty damned substantial stuff.

    don't short yourself, OK?

k-lo: i remember that tag! :D heh...i wonder if that's actually a fetish out there somewhere, like furries or something...

wombat: i always find it helpful to have all those tags handy when you compose a new post, don't you? :>

I try to pick a few words that capture the essence or subject of the blog.  Common words so that it's not too obscure.

i think soulcast made a post about this so make sure that my tags have something to do with the topic of my post.. =)

Okay, I'll give you that...but you get an awful lot of views, dontcha?
Who could resist reading a post tagged "piscatory pugilism"?
It's so intimidating and yet...so deep.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 01, 2007....
well, yeah, although that doesn't make me unique, twyla.

heh..."piscatory pugilism" is an expression i and a few others have used a few times in the past few months so i'm glad i piqued your curiosity. :D

but really, that isn't deep, it's just me using less familiar words to communicate the same idea. to me, that means that, at best, maybe it sounds deep. but it isn't. :>

I do what Expendable does. Only sometimes, I listen to the voices in Ex's head. 0.o

When I first came here (waves to ed) I picked tags that seemed relevant to the post at hand -- kind of a one-word summary.

Now I look at my current tags and see if any apply, otherwise I do the same.

When replying, the software helpfully suggests some tags and I will usually pick one or more of them.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Nov 01, 2007....
I tend to grab a few of my usual tags if I'm in a hurry (and they fit), but I usually try to summarize the content thoroughly (if it's a Pensieve, I try to hit most of the different subjects within, for example) unless I want the content to be a surprise for some reason. It seems a kindness to mark your posts well, so that readers can pass up or choose to look with some degree of accuracy as to what they're going to skip or read.

i do a process kinda like word association....whatever pops into my head after writing it that is associated with what i wrote.
  • CreativeWoman said on Nov 01, 2007....
Most of my posts are about my life, so I use life a lot.  Then I tag a couple of words I've used in the post and what I consider the main theme to be.

ex: [note to self, gain control of ex's voices]

    super z: see above. :p

TS: [waves back] my blog subjects are a bit too diverse to do that, sadly.

infernal: heh...tagging accurately is particularly important if you post erotica and you want to permit people to opt out. :>

fallyn: that's not too dissimilar from what ex does, AFAICT. :>

CW: you know, life is an exceedingly popular tag here--and on a blogging site, what would make more sense?

Ed- Tags don't really mean anything to me. I place a tag because you can't post without one. When commenting on others posts, I usually click on the first I see. I've added a tag once since I've been here.

On my own posts, its the first thing that comes to mind that fits or I do a quick review of the ones I've used.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 02, 2007....
fallyn: nah, not really. question is, are you listening to your voices or hers? :D

beyond: ah, yes, the tagging of comments is a weird business, isn't it? me personally, i always add tags that i think appropriate, which happens more often with political blog entries than other ones.
