I know I have some comments on other posts I need to respond to, but I wanted to post about tonight first. :)
If I had been home alone with the kids (since DH works second shift), I probably would've just stayed put and handed out candy. Instead, my best friend took little one by the hand (and in his arms several times :)) and I scooped up linebacker baby, and we went trick-or-treating.
Little one had never been, and we were worried at first that we set out too early. We ran across another family (heavily pregnant mom, five-year-old daughter, and daddy too) and joined up. It felt nicer than I'd have expected to finally make another connection with neighbors here, even if a just for-the-night one.
We trekked all through the complex. It was funny to watch little one follow the older girl's example. At first, she didn't understand that she was supposed to put the candy in her basket, and she looked confused as to why random people were handing things to her. Even though she didn't have any of the accessories/finishing touches to her costume (she wouldn't wear the hat and refused to let me wrap her hair or strap on an eye patch or anything like that), people kept commenting on how cute she was. She at least remembered to say "Tanks you" to most of them. :)
Linebacker baby fell asleep in my arms in his costume about halfway around. Sixteen pounds of baby + unwieldy costume means mommy hits the shower and Motrin big-time upon returning home, by the way. Ouch! We were out for less than two hours, but my arms told me they'd like to move to Siberia without me. I guess I'm not in good shape (hey, round is...yeah). :-D
When we got home, little one proudly poured her small stash (we stopped as soon as her little bucket was full) onto the kiddie table and proceeded to hoard it (think dragons and gold) until I pried her away for bath time. (She only ate one piece - of my choosing, since some of it isn't stuff she can have yet - so no worries.)
I'm so glad we went. :)
Pictures - the pirate princess and our pumpkin baby - oh, and a super-crappy one of our pumpkins (the bottom right one is mine, was supposed to be a gryphon and didn't come out all that well).
