short version: perennial attention whore fred phelps, who made headlines as a jackass of epic proportions for protesting at the funeral of matthew shepard, has begun protesting at the funerals of soldiers killed in iraq. i mention all of this b/c the perennial attention whore lost a civil suit in damages for doing so last year. long version here.

commentary: honestly, i just detest phelps so much that i am joyful in anything that goes badly for him. long-time readers of me know how i feel about attention whores. it's even worse for homophobic shithead attention whores. :>

silver - I don't know who Fred Phelps is but must say that I have ZERO respect for a man that would show such inexcusable disrespect at any funeral.

Ed- If asked who in the world today could most likely make my stomach turn, it would be this man (even more than you-know-who).

If I'm not mistaken, most of those church members are family. He must have some kind of a hold over them. They are all totally disgusting.

I had mercifully never heard of that mouth-breathing oxygen thief until he showed up on the campus of my university. He almost made me regret that I'm a pacifist. The funeral protests are redefining low - and the sad thing is, I'm not even surprised. Horrified, yes. Surprised, not so much.

I wonder if we can hold out hope that he'll someday compete for a Darwin Award. :-p

I hate Fred Phelps too!  That is exactly what he is doing.  Everything he does it to get his name out there, and for what, I can't figure out? His wife and daughters to a better job of selling his beliefs than he does, and no one I know of is buying any of their crap either.  As far as protesting Iraq's fallen, he has done that ever since the war began.  To the point, that most cities now are adopting regulations for protestors or anyone for that matter.  They have to stay several feet back away from the procession at all times.  Now, I didn't read your article, just getting ready to go to bed.  So, they might have mentioned all of this in the article.  Sorry, if I am just repeating, but when I saw your title, I had to jump and put my agreement in to.
  • crybabylu said on Oct 31, 2007....
Oh Please, don't get me started on Phelps, he's just plain nuts!  Either that or, he's downright mean!  But, I have to agree with you about him wanting attention, and he picked the Iraq war of all things, to make his views be known.
Ever since casualties have been coming home, they have been on a horrible, lacking any correct word for it, to the families.  Not only have they protested at the funerals, they have sent emails and letters asking the families, what it felt like to know their loved one had died in vain?   Serving one's country is the highest thing a person can do for their country.  It makes me plum mad, and I am still reeling over it!
  • crybabylu said on Oct 31, 2007....
What is it with SC tonite?  They keep eating up our posts.  Anyhow to be brief, I agree with everything that has been said.about Phelps.   No one can say enough bad stuff about that Phelps.  How dare he treat our soldiers families like that!

rupe: you're unfamiliar with fred phelps? that's for the best, really--he's a world-class attention whore, really. time was, he used to be a civil rights lawyer and evidently quite good as one, but he founded a radical church that used to protest at the funerals of gays with signs that said "fags will burn in hell" and other such charming crap. however, since the US deployed troops in iraq, he's begun pulling the same crap at the funerals of soldiers killed in iraq. my referring to him as an attention whore is consistent w/ what i consider the best theory about his behavior: he wants attention so badly he will do things like this.

beyond: you're correct, most church members are indeed his family. and yes, i agree that they're disgusting.

infernal: on that day, i will throw a party. it isn't nice, but then again, sometimes, neither am i. and i've made peace with that. :>

pd: yeah, some of it's in the article but no big. :>

dee: i like how infernal put it, "mouth-breathing oxygen thief". :D

Infernal--this guy doesn't even deserve a darwin award, that would just give him more attention...But, I did learn something here, today.

Ed--  I had no idea he used to be a civil rights lawyer.  On which side of the equation?  If he was supporting civil rights, then he is either now, senile, or back then he was a big fat liar!  and If that is the case, yu know the saying about a lepard not being able to change its spots.

that info almost makes me madder!  Becasue that means he knows better!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 01, 2007....
dee: yep, he was on the good side, but i think that just goes to show that sometimes, even a broken clock is right twice/day, you know?

i am in agreement, except for in one particular: people need to know that scum like him exists, lest people think that idiocy has somehow been eliminated. :>
