I lived on the East Coast during the infamous 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. I may be new to earthquakes, but when my boyfriend's apartment building began shaking last night during "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", there was no mistaking it. Last night's earthquake apparently registered a 5.6 on the Richter Scale, the largest since the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that caused billions of dollars in damages in the San Francisco Bay Area.
My boyfriend is from California and wasn't phased at all. Just the other day though my t.v. show was interupted to announce that a 2.1 or 2.3 quake had just occurred in the East Bay. Why so much activity suddenly? Is a big one on its way? I just sat there wondering what the hell I would do if another quake occurred, a bigger one. I know many of the buildings in the city have been retrofitted but I don't think my boyfriend's apartment building has. I found myself looking at the door frame, thinking go myself, gee, we could stand under it but if the whole building collapses, we're on the top floor going down with it ...
Oh well, I'm over it today but I do hope that all the earthquake fun is over for a long, long time.
