I was sitting on the floor carving pumpkins for the work Halloween contest last night when I started choking on some candy I was eating.  Nothing serious, but the kind of choking that makes your eyes tear up.  After about 5 minutes of coughing my boyfriend came over and patted my back.  I resumed carving.

About 1/2 hour later the building started shaking.  At first I thought it had finally been hit by one of the huge trucks that drive by all the time.  It kept rocking so the BF and I got up and walked to a doorway.  It lasted a few more seconds and then settled down.  I found out later it was a 5.6 earthquake centered about 20 miles from us.  I went back to carving.

A few minutes later my BF told me to put the pumpkin down.  Usually I'd tell him to blow, but something about his voice sounded different.  He got down on one knee and told me that he didn't want to lose me and he wanted to live with me the rest of his life.  He asked me to marry him and I accepted.  He then said that my choking and the earth shaking were too scary for him and he took mother nature's hint and asked.

I'm very excited and absolutely terrified.  I'm not young and carefree and this marriage will not be like the last.  Mostly I'm happy and looking forward to building the loving and secure future that we both want with each other.

I'll post pictures of the ring he gave me.  It's beautiful!!!  All those times I talked about rings he was really listening.  It's the exact ring that I've always wanted and dreamed about.

    unique- Whoa! Congratulations, girl.

I thought it was really neat that choking and an earthquake tempted him to ask at that moment.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 31, 2007....
Oh my God! Wow! You're engaged now? Congratulations! I didn't even really know you guys were seeing each other again. I mean, I gathered you were because I saw you referencing 'your boyfriend' a lot lately. But I must have missed where you said you were back together. And now this? That's great. I'm so glad you guys worked everything out :-)

As for the earthquake, I was very curious how you were doing with that. I thought about you immediately when I heard about it on the news. I knew you were close to there and I was hoping you were alright. As long as they don't do any damage, earthquakes are kind of cool. But the bad ones? Not so much. I'm glad it wasn't anything major.

    Congratulations again!

BTV - I'm just glad it didn't take a full blown heart attack to prod him into taking the big step. :)

ET - Yeah, I'd kept the BF - wait Fiancee - and I on the down low just in case it didn't work out.  I didn't need an audience to failure, but it ended up turning out okay.  Being a CA native I thought the earthquake was all good fun, only a few jars off the shelfs, etc.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 31, 2007....
I trust the fiance is going to start respecting you and treating you better, right? I hope he's been a good boy lately. He must have been if you said yes! And I agree that earthquakes are pretty fun most of the time. I've been through several, but some of them were really bad. Were you in the Bay Area during that one in 89?

Congratulations U-I!  That is wonderful and I wish you all the very, very best!  What a story to remember--the incidents that led to a proposal.  I am very happy for you!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
ET - My moving out was a wake up call for him.  He knows that I'm determined to set boundries that he's not allowed to cross.  I was in Napa during the '89 quake and felt it too, though at the time I thought it was morning sickness with my son's pregnancy.

wombat - Thank you.  It will be a very memorable event with the earthquake and all.

I was at my boyfriend's in San Francisco last night and felt the quake too.  I have never been out here for a "big one" and only felt tremors one other time ... can't say that I enjoyed it.  That's two in two days (though the one in the East Bay was much smaller and I did not feel it).
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
simply - thanks.  Some of our neighbors were not as happy about the quake.  Parking is under the building, so a few moved their cars "just in case".
  • quietone said on Oct 31, 2007....
Congratulations....I am happy for you too!!  I thought of you when I saw the news this morning about the quake.  Glad you are safe.
  • skald said on Oct 31, 2007....
Congrats getting engaged after an earthquake that is something.

I have experienced earthquakes, twice over 6 on Richter not far from here but no one gave me a ring after that. lol
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
quietone - thank you, this was definately one of the better earthquakes I've been through.

skald - Hmmm, you're onto something.  Perhaps I should let my DH-to-be that I expect some form of jewelry for each earthquake we share. :)
  • Battycat said on Oct 31, 2007....
WOW - Congratulations, when and where will the wedding be? Or are you still getting over the shock :-))
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Battycat - We haven't really talked about a date and/or where.  I'm assuming it will be in the bay area since we both have family here.  Neither of us is willing to rush, since it's the second time for us both.  I'm still kind of in shock at the size of the ring, it's huge!
  • Battycat said on Oct 31, 2007....
Can't wait to see it - get a picture on here soon :-)
  • destinydiva said on Oct 31, 2007....

    really happy for you ((((((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))
    yay!!!!!!  :-)

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Batty - Here's a link with a similar ring.  It's a princess cut (square) diamond (1.5 ct) with marquis shaped sapphires (7x5) in platnum.  I don't want to even think about how much it cost!

destiny - I guess some times a little space is a good thing.  No immediate plans to move back in either.  I suppose we may end up being one of "those" couples that needs a lot of space.
  • Battycat said on Oct 31, 2007....
    It's georgeous, I wish you both all the best {{{{hug}}}}

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Eilan - Thanks, and yes, I'm really pretty crazy about the ring and it's bearer. ;)

tizzy - Thanks, no we haven't even discussed a date.  I've got a couple of dates in mind, but something tells me this will one of those negotiations that goes on for awhile.

SL - Thank you, I'm very lucky to find someone to share my life with.

Mobil - You have no idea.  The good news is that people in my family live a very long time, so he'll have plenty of time to rue the day. (lol)

ginger - It's my belief that good things are contagious and I'm happy to be part of the "disease".

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Fallyn - Thank you.  I'm still sorting out all of the feelings that keep popping up.  It's wonderful but really weird.
  • Fallyn said on Oct 31, 2007....
i hope you feel good about it........that wouldn't be good to not feel good about it.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Fallyn - It is a good feeling.  But there are moments of panic when I realize that I'm 40 something and engaged.  The thought of looking for a wedding dress at my age makes me giggle hysterically.
  • Mr_Box said on Oct 31, 2007....

Miss Ironic.......soon to be Mrs. Ironic.....congratulations. What an amazing moment to pick to pop the question. Did he plan that earthquake?

    Just kidding.

Obviously he knew he was going to do this if he had a ring already. That's great news. I hope you'll be very happy.

  • Fallyn said on Oct 31, 2007....
*GRIN* .....you don't have to do traditional if it makes you uncomfortable.
this is about you...and what will make YOU happy. ....well...and him. :P

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Mr Box - Thank you.  He says that I rock his world, so the earthquake was the nudge he needed.  How sweet, huh?!

Fallyn - I do have thoughts on what I want.  I've already done traditional.  And I suppose I could always ask him ;)
  • gingersoul said on Oct 31, 2007....
Uni.....this is the kind of coincidences i love the most.....imagine if he said "You rock my boat"..... would have bene a flood in Napa Valley?...lol....
  • Fallyn said on Oct 31, 2007....
    *giggling* that's a possibility. :P
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....

ginger - the world will never know. (thankfully)  I'm equally thankful then that he didn't say "you are the world to me". .... lol ....

Fallyn - I said I could, but I think we both know that I'm going to do whatever I think is best.  His job is to be arm candy. ;)

  • Fallyn said on Oct 31, 2007....
yes. we do both know that......a wedding is a girls domain! and he'd better be happy being arm candy. *grin*

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 31, 2007....
Fallyn - *sigh* This one must have been dropped on his head as a baby.  He still thinks he has a say in it all. (insert hysterical laughing)  That's okay, I'll learn him!  If neccesary I'm willing to have wall to wall sex until he's too exhausted to argue with me.  It's a sacrifice ;) but one worth the win.
  • Fallyn said on Oct 31, 2007....
    *giggling*
    such a sacrifice.

oh if only all sacrifices could be so fun.   his head will be spinning.

    uh..hopefully not literally.

u-i:  That's great!  (I had to read one of your sentences a couple of times before I got it... I thought you wrote, "This marriage is not going to be the last," and I thought, "If she already knows that, why is she getting marrried?", but then I realized that you wrote, "This marriage is not going to be like the last.")  And what a great engagement story.  I'm happy for you.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 01, 2007....

Mamie, confuzzled, CW, Zayda, TIO, queen - Thank you.

Fearing - I'm astounded at how stupid my camera is about not focusing on the ring.  It is pretty spectacular, but then I'm predjudiced.

    nurse - I am excited!

botoni - a little "thunk on the head" for the fiancee

vacant - leave it to me to get ahead of myself!

kruuyai - This is uncharted territory for me for sure.  Much different than the last time I found myself with a ring on my finger.

scipio - well, it did make the earth shake under our feet

rupert - I agree a happy marriage is the best thing to happen to a person.
