When Mr Polar was a young lad he went on a school camp "veld skool", litteraly meaning "field school". . .like a nature / life skills experience for teenagers.  Something that they did, which has struck me as so great, is that they buried their "can'ts".

They were encouraged to write down all the things that they felt they cannot do on a small piece of paper.  Then they had to dig a deep hole, place the piece of paper inside and cover it up with earth again.  The act was to settle in their minds that there is nothing they cannot do.

I have always felt inspired by this story, because through our marriage when I have asked Mr Polar whether he "can't do something?" he would retort with "I buried my can'ts".  Now for me that is a key to victorious living! :-)

I like this post.  What a great idea.  I'll need a bulldozer in my backyard for the hole I'm gonna need.

polar ~ wow what a cool idea!  This should be a part of every childs growing.  Next time I have my oldest grandson, I am going to do that with him!  I don't have any can'ts today (other than the usual can't remember) LOL

Yeah... Umm... No... I think I know my only real reason for lack of success is lack of effort. Oh, sure there's bad timing and "someone better was chosen" but that's all part of it. Consistant effort will pay off.

I heard it explained like this: Anything you attempt is like a science experiment. If you don't succeed at first it is not that you failed but that you missed some points in preparing for success. You make adjustments and try again. Each unsuccessful attempt is a stepping stone to success. It's not exactly trial and error because you don't fail, you just need to do things a little better.

Of course there are many things I can't do but I believe if it was important enough to me I could do them.

POLAR BABES! We all need to pick up on this. Just imagine what a wonderful life each of us could have when we bury our 'cants'!

that is a very cool exercise, polar!

i try to frame "can't" in terms of what is physically possible, myself, b/c everything else is about weighing costs/benefit, at least to me.

That was very cool and insightful of the group leader.

When at my last dojo we had a similar policy of not allowing using the words "can't" and "can not" in the building.  If you did use them you had to do pushups.  One night, when I first joined, I did over a hundred push ups.  I didn't realize how frequently I was saying that.

I like Hottie's philosophy.....mine problem is lack of focus therefore lack of  preparation therefore the sensation that "I cant'"...

But usually any time i said 'I can't" i ended up discovering that indeed 'I could"..

Its like the story of the little train that was always saying 'I wish i could, i wish i could" and then started to say "I think i can, I think i can" and it did climb on top of the hill....

I always loved that children story...

Pollie......you know what.."I think you can, i think you can"....:-)

    Dont be afraid of making mistakes.....usually they are so big only in our eyes..{{hugs}}

I used to say, in the dance classes  I taught for teens,
    "Never say can't!"
    and they'd say, "Well, I can't!"
    and I'd say,
"You just haven't tried hard enough yet!"

I think it was Yoda who said, "Do or do not. There is no try." Substitute try with can't and you have almost the same.

there does come  a point where there are certain things that just aren't possible....and even if they ARE possible....doesn't mean you HAVE to get there.

my ex expected me to be able to control my body temperature, and we'd get into 4 hour long arguments about it.......

the yoda quote reminded me....cause he used to quote that at me.
