I was just interested.

For example, I know I'm Filipino because I was born in the Philippines to Filipino parents. I know I'm Filipino because I eat balut, isaw, dinuguan, and bagoong alamang. I know I'm Filipino because I'm a fan of "Barangay Ginebra". I know I'm Filipino because I call people "kuya", "ate", "tito", "tita", "lolo", "lola" even though I am not related to them. I know I'm Filipino because I'm addicted to text messaging. I know I'm Filipino because I can speak two languages (English and Filipino) and three dialects (Hiligaynon, Cebuano and Kiniray-a (four if you count 'deep Tagalog')).

I know I'm an Ilongga because my national food is La Paz batchoy (yumyum!). I know I'm an Ilongga because I speak Hiligaynon and Kiniray-a. I know I'm an Ilongga because I'm usually malambing but I can be a warfreak when I get mad (watch out HH2B!).

And I know I'm a Mindanaoan because I use a malong instead of a blanket when I sleep.

How about you?

interesting indicators. i need to write a whole blog to explain why i can't define my national identity here at soulcast... :-)

anyway, i've done some substantial studies on austronesian languages and origins, and my reference books tell me that hiligaynon, sugbuhanon and kinaray-a are not mere dialects, but full languages in their own right. you are so lucky that you can actually speak five languages!

moonriver: Wow. They're already languages? We just consider them dialects *lol*. We are so regional-minded (sort of like clannishness) that some Luzonians (especially Manilenyos) actually discriminate against Visayans and Mindanaoans, so having an ear for languages saves me a lot of grief (I speak 'deep Tagalog' like a native, thanks to my SO). Anyway, I'm just trying to see how people define their identity. More of that regional-mindedness again, I suppose... like here, Manilenyos are supposed to be 'refined', Ilokanos are so thrifty they're stingy (kuripot), Cebuanos are loudmouths, Ilonggas are sweet, those belonging to the Muslim tribes are warlike, and all those tribal stereotypes. But we do have some things in common, like what I've already mentioned above. So what do the people in your country have in common?

i think people in most asian countries are regionalistic too, because of the great diversity of peoples, cultures, languages and environments. and also because many of the colonial and post-colonial states tried to forcibly bind diverse peoples into just one national identity. that includes the big countries like china, india and indonesia. in that sense, i think regionalism is good, not bad, so long as it doesn't deeply undermine national identities.

re my own country, it's best that i answer your question indirectly, with a blog i wrote last december.
