I saw a brief buried on page 13 of my sports section today about the NBA deciding to lessen their rules on gambling because "more than half of the NBA's 56 referees violated league rules against casino gambling."
The article went on to say that the rules are being changed because Commissioner David Stern feels the rules are "outdated."
When I read this, I thought of three things:
1. Someone should have told this to Tim Donaghy earlier. You remember, Donaghy, don't you? He's the ref that got in trouble betting on games that he worked. (Stern also said that they will review his case.)
2. You can't fire half the refs, so change the rules.
3. The rumors may be true: The NBA is considering putting a franchise in Las Vegas and don't want any messy rules to get in the way.
I bet you (get it?) that the Kings would be the team to move. Heck, the owners may their money in Vegas so it would be easier to have all their assets there.
In my opinion, though, that would be a mistake. I've been to a Kings game. The fans there love their Kings and are very loyal. The team plays in an out-dated facility...but that's another blog for another time.
The NBA in Vegas...what are the odds?
