Recently, my brother shared an embarrassing picture of me with someone I know and it was from when I was 12 years old. And my hair was really bad. Like super bad. And I believe the comment that was made was that my hair looked like lesbian PE teacher hair. That really made me feel good! And for the record, my hair is NOT like that anymore. I've got good hair. But back then? Wow. It was bad.

But that hairstyle wasn't the worst one. In my efforts to retaliate against this embarrassing picture attack, I decided to look through a photo album. And I found an interesting picture of Jack making a really dumb face. But I realized I couldn't use this picture because I was in it too. And my hair! What the hell was I thinking? It was dyed black. But that's not the bad part. The bad part was that I actually had some sort of bleached stripe on the side of my head.

I truly do not remember wearing my hair like that. It must have been a quick phase. I vaguely recall bleaching my hair so I could put blue in it. But not this skunk style. This was just wrong on so many levels. And unfortunately it's been preserved for all of time in a photograph.

I also had a phase where I wanted to be a rock star, and I grew my hair out long. Not good. Although, I thought it was pretty cool at the time. In fact, I'm quite certain that all of my bad hairstyles seemed cool at the time. That's why I did it. But looking back, I just can't understand what I was doing. Or if I owned a mirror.

I know I can't be alone with stories like this. What sort of horrible hairstyles have you sported over the years? Mullets? Feathered Farrah Fawcett hair? Crazy haircolors? Getting a bad haircut sucks, but I want to hear about the styles you actually wanted on purpose.

Two words- rat tail. You know short hair all the way around except for in the middle of the back of the net. Used to have one a quarter of the way down my back. Good thing all the pictures from then were taken from the front.

Oh boy. I'm sure I still have a picture somewhere of each of them, but my first awful hairstyle was a really tight curly (spiral) perm - I brushed it once and it looked like I had a lion's mane (my hair seriously bushed out in a foot-thick halo - it was horrible). Most of the time I just looked stupid with it, but that was a whole new shade of ick.

And then there was the haircut that was...a wee bit shorter than I intended, the summer before my sophomore year of college. (Not a great time to go experimenting!) I went from pretty long hair to "it might be an inch and a half in the longest places." The stylist had taken my concept and gone hog-wild, and I didn't realize she was going way shorter than I meant until I saw some seriously scary chunks of hair falling past me to the floor. What was I going to do at that point? Wear hair of varying chopped-off lengths?

It was easy to care for, but I think I'm the only one who even eventually thought it was decent. My brother laughed every time he saw me that summer.

decayedmind--I had a friend who had a rat tail. I agree with you. That was a really bad fashion choice! But there was a time when it was cool. I'm not sure why though!

infernal--The fluffy lion hair sounds like my hair if I grow it long! It's not a good look on anyone, is it? And it's always bad if they make your hair too short. Especially if you're a girl. I would just wear a hat :-P

silver--I guess you're gonna make me imagine it, huh? It was probably a mullet, right? :-P

That picture was really funny, Kyle. Lesbian PE teacher hair!! LOL! Awww......poor you. I thought you looked cute though :)

My worst hairstyles.........hmmm......when I was in jr. high I had a perm. But some of it didn't take, so my bangs were really curly and the rest was only wavy. So I looked like I had a poodle tail on my forehead! LOL!

In high school I would sometimes dye my hair different colors. I think I've been every haircolor they make!! LOL But I always went back to blonde........I had my hair super short in a pixie cut once. I thought it was super cute but when I see the pictures, I looked like a lesbian PE teacher! LOL!

But you are right. Your hair is good now :) I love your hair!

ET....You ve created an awful debate for me. Was it the ducktail or the afro that was the most frightening? Looking like Mr. Clean is, if nothing else, neat. Solves the hair problem completely.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Oct 24, 2007....
Bottie, you just reminded me that my dad once had an afro - I saw his high school yearbook, so he can't deny it! :-D

I'm gonna guess that ed had a bowl cut or...oo, I know! A mohawk! :-D

My hair has always been cool. What can I say? I'm awesome like that.

    Okay. So I'm lying.

I might keep lying if no one knew me here. But I am quite sure you'd set everyone straight, Kyle.

I've had some really stupid hairstyles. Bleached blonde for instance. That was short lived.

I also had some form of that black hair with the bleach stripe. Maybe this was some sort family hair crisis we had? Did mom do that to us? Nah. I doubt that. She hated it when we'd mess with our hair. I guess we were both just stupid.

I'm glad you finally wrote something, dude. I was getting bored.

When I was in high school I had a huge afro.  I was tall and very skinny......6'4, 160lbs.......I looked like a toilet brush!
  • Twylarants said on Oct 25, 2007....
Aww, and here I thought I looked good with my Farrah-do in the 70s!
When I started going gray in the late eighties, I thought it would be cool to dye everything red except a gray streak from the hairline above my right eye back.
I looked like a lopsided, sunburned skunk.

Yay!  A post Kyle good job!  OK so bad hair.....well my Mom used to cut my hair like a boy when I was really really young.....My sister and I had an intervention with her about that when I was probably in the 2nd grade.  We wanted to be girls lol!  Um  I had one hair cut I cried about, it was really bad!!  But luckily a few days later I found a hairdresser that fixed it!  Another time I tried to dye my hair with kool aid.  I have no idea why.....my best friend and I heard that it would be really cool....but it was just a horrid sticky mess!  I think I pulled more hair out than I really wanted to....and apparently you can't wash it or the color comes out so you have this sticky goo and you just have to keep brushing it until it resembles hair again....that sucked......I'm sure I've had more horrible hair but I always had the attitude of "it'll grow out" so I never really focused on it!  Oh and hey....sorry about the lesbian PE teacher thing....but it's true!  I can show you a picture of her!  As for the bad face picture....you could always just cut yourself out and show a certain someone the bad face!!!
  • gingersoul said on Oct 25, 2007....

Kyle......i think i never had extremely bad hair.......well, beside the infamous bowl-on-the-head cut that my mom used to inflict to me and my sister until middle school......you know.......she just put a bowl on our heada and cut any hair that would stick out.....let me tell you....i looked like a Vietnamese girl escaped from a refugee camp....LOL..

I think my  mistakes have been more color wise ......i went almost orange one year...and eggplant-ish another one....one year i got the most thick perm of my life.....it looked like an afro....simply horrible...i dont know how many shampoos i did to loose it up......

Bad hair.  There should be a law requiring you to get the approval of at least two sane people before you do stupid shit to your hair.

I think perms were my worst enemy.  My mom would do the home perm thing in Jr High and sometimes I looked like the wicked witch of the west afterward.  Had one that was so tight I could NOT get a comb through it.

Color, I apparently have no good sense.  A week before high school graduation I decided to go blond, at home, which of course led to bright orange hair since I'm naturally a very deep brunette.  I had to put dark color rinses in it for months until the damage grew out.  I've done jet black to dark blond since.

Styles, well I've done from getting hair cut so short I looked like a brunette Sandy Duncan to middle of the back long.  I did the Farrah look complete with pencil thin eyebrows and the asymetrical hair cuts that make you look like a weed wacker attacked you.

Now I stick with a shade that could be my real color, no perms and mid length.

I have the ability to forget anything I didnt like!!  lol so if I had a dodgy haircut I dont remember it :-)
ha I did have at one time a streak though that looked awful, and my mum has the photograph to preserve the memory forever!! :-) xx

Yup - the mullet had to be the worst, or maybe the lopsided cut (where one side was longer than the other). I loved 80's big hair - - Jersey style - - Lots of Aqua Net!!
  • Twylarants said on Oct 25, 2007....
Oh yeah...Aqua Net!  We Jersey girls did more than our share of ozone layer destroying spraying.
  • Tink11464 said on Oct 25, 2007....
I'm in PA - but boy did I envy the Jersey girls - - no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get my hair as High - - - ahhhhh - the good ole days...

cutie--I would love to see the poodle tail! You need to get some pictures from your mom so I'm not the only one who's embarrassed :-P I'm glad you thought I looked cute though! I bet I'd think you were cute too, even if you did have lesbian PE teacher hair!

botoni--I'm gonna have to say that the afro was probably worse! At least you don't have to worry about hair issues anymore :-P

infernal--Yeah, Ed with a mowhawk! I like that image.

Mr Box--I'm sorry you've been bored. I'll do my best to entertain you in the future. As for bad hair of yours, do you remember when you used to streak your hair black with a Sharpie pen? That was funny!

silver--You were too cool for the mullet, eh? Then you must have had a mowhawk like Infernal suggested!

actorguy--I'm still cracking up over 'toilet brush'. Someone said I looked that once too! Curly hair is a curse!

twyla--A lopsided, sunburned skunk? That's hilarious! I've seen women with the gray stripe before and it always reminds me of the Bride of Frankenstein.

tizzy--I knew someone who dyed their hair with blue Kool Aid! I didn't actually watch them do it, so I have no idea how messy it was. But it did work. For a day anyway. Then it washed out. You're forgiven for the PE teacher comment because you weren't wrong! And I don't know about the other picture yet. I could crop myself out of it. That would save me from being called skunk boy at least!

ginger--Perms and bad color are probably the worst, and the easiest to mess up!

tara--I remember the girls with the really big hair! Or the bangs that stood straight up in air. I remember thinking they looked okay back then, but now it's just funny!

alls--It's never a good idea to do something weird to your hair before picture day! Dark brown hair always turns orange when you bleach it. I don't know how the professional people do it, but I guess they have secrets!

uniquely--It really should require approval before you do stupid shit to your hair. But it doesn't help when your friends all look worse than you do! I think that was my problem back in the day.

destiny--Lucky you! No bad hair that you remember? I'm sure your mom has lots of pictures that you forgot about!

tink--I remember girls with their Aqua Net cans. It was a staple!
  • CreativeWoman said on Oct 25, 2007....
I had the Farrah do, but I sort of liked it back then.  What I really cringe at when I look at pictures are my perms on medium length hair.  I curled my bangs and pulled the sides up.  The rest was kinky/curly. It's just NOT a good look on me.

    Yuck.

Okay. Let me first say that I have very think, naturally curly hair. TIGHT curls. My mom took me to get a hair cut a week before picture day and I wanted the most popular hairstyle for girls AND boys that year...the bowl cut. I swear on everything it looked like an atomic bomb blew up on my head and all that was left was the mushroom cloud. I thought it was going to be cool....boy was I wrong. I have never been mistaken for a boy so much in my life.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 25, 2007....
CW--I think every woman has had a bad perm, haven't they? It's so funny what we used to think looked good on us!

boogiebear--I can just imagine what that looked like! Curly hair has a mind of it's own. And if you're a girl, it never looks good short. I can totally envision the mushroom cloud!
