Here, thanks to blogger georgia10, is the single best explanation for what's wrong with political discourse in this country right now:

"On the merits, the GOP knows full well that it has lost its audience.  Poll after poll shows that when it comes to issues, Americans overwhelmingly support the Democratic agenda.  Political survival then depends on misdirection from this fact.  At any cost.

The most common form of misdirection employed by the idea-barren Republican Party is to avoid talking about ideas altogether.  And the most common method used to accomplish this goal? Deflecting attention from the policy to the personal.

And oh, what masters of deflection Republicans have become.  A debate about whether to invade Iraq becomes a debate about whether Joe Wilson's undercover CIA wife hooked him up with a sweet junket overseas.  A debate on stem cell research becomes a debate about whether Michael J. Fox exaggerates his symptoms.  A debate about the right to privacy becomes a debate about whether Terri's blinks were voluntary.  A debate on Iraq policy becomes a debate about how mean people are to General Petraeus.  A debate about health care becomes a full-blown investigation into the lifestyles of 12 year old Graeme Frost and 2 year old Bethany Wilkerson.  A debate about curbing global climate change becomes a debate about how many compact fluorescent light bulbs Al Gore has in his house.  A debate about the shameful level of poverty in this country becomes a debate about how much money John Edwards spent on a haircut.  A debate about who's qualified to be president becomes a debate about who does or does not wear a lapel pin. A debate about executive accountability becomes a debate about whether Representative Stark hurt Mr. Bush's feelings.

Knowing that they cannot emerge victoriously out of a battle of ideas, Republicans latch on to individuals instead.  Public figures and private citizens alike are fair game as the right-wing noise machine turns its cacophony-creating media apparatus in non-discriminating fashion upon any individual, any prey that can serve to distract even for one minute from the utter vapidity of the Republican platform today."

Does anyone else here agree with me that this sums up the situation almost perfectly?

Nope. It seems like the original blogger has had a failure of critical thinking and thinks that pointing out hypocrisy is a bad thing.

Although pointing out hypocrisy is a tactic used by both sides.

But I suppose that if everyone was a Democrat and agreed on which problems should be solved by national government and how those problems should be fixed that no one would be complaining about a lack of ideas.

Now that my snark is out of the way, though, I agree that the Republicans have been light on ideas lately. When they swept in in 1994, and also with Reagan in 1980, they had lots of ideas. Lately they've been in defensive mode though. The last big idea that I remember is Social Security reform and no one wanted to even discuss that.

Not that the Dems have had any good ideas lately either.

Sorry to double post, but here's my thought, and it's not limited to Republicans alone:

Ad-hominem attacks are de rigeur in politics, and always have been. I don't really see any solution for this problem except for better education of voters.

Admittedly, "they do it too" is a pretty weak argument. But I'm not sure what else to say or do about it.

On Television, the other night, watching the Republican debate was somewhat confusing, because instead of answering any tough questions, they each seem to keep refering to their own record on how they voted and when, and what stand they are taking now.
  • bloc said on Oct 21, 2007....
The republican debates can be summed up as; "I'll torture twice as many people as Bush. Oh, and i'll lower taxes even further while we're spending massive amounts of money on war. Oh, and I'll invade Iran."

This is what they do when they aren't making it personal. They talk down to americans because that's all their base can understand.
  • lioneljay said on Oct 22, 2007....
Bloc, I'm willing to give the Republican base a little more credit. It's not that they can't understand more challenging explanations than they get from their candidates. It's that the Republicans have figured out that many Americans simply don't have the attention span for anything more than sound-bite quality language.

Democrats, on the other hand, seem to want to insist on taking more attention than is available.

TS, I think you missed the point. Take a close look at the paragraph that begins, "And oh, what masters..." and you'll see that this is an excellent summary of how each of these topics has been dealt with lately. Example: right after the testimony of General Petraeus, the Republicans avoided discussion of his testimony on the merits by switching the subject to the MoveOn.org ad that appeared in the New York Times. That's the kind of distraction that they use when the more honest thing to do would be to stand up and discuss the issue on its merits.

LJ......I think you need to check the rhetoric coming out of both houses from the Dem's, you say the Repub's don't have any ideas that offer any solutions for this country. You may be right, but the Dem's answer to everything is throw more money at the problem. Take from the Rich-(which I might add includes many small businesses) & give to the less Rich. One of the major problems we are facing in this country is the lack of attempt by the left to work with the right-(compromise). Do you really think it works in anybody's favor for people to spew remarks about their oppoents that are so full of hate.
It's like everything else I've heard from people on the left, you referred to the Republican debate in a total negative way, yet, you make the Dem's sound like their debates are so robust. May I point out that Hilary is the best the Dem's have to offer & I don't know about you, but I sure would like a straight answer on what she would really do about the middle East, not just a bunch of sound bites. Be honest, do you really think a Democrat cares what a Republican thinks or says. I mean when Obama said he would be willing to go into our allies terrority-(invade) Pakistan, without their permission. Did anyone on the Republican side get up before a news camera & denounce him for being Naive & stupid? I mean if Dem's can call Bush a lier, a coward & many other names. I think it only fitting that the Republicans do the same. Maybe you could tell me which party uses the Hollywood crowd to make some of the most outrageous remarks about Bush & the Repubilicans? You do realize that among voters, well over 40% voted for Bush, Not once but twice? What do you think made them vote for Bush the second time? BST

"You do realize that among voters, well over 40% voted for Bush, Not once but twice? What do you think made them vote for Bush the second time?"

You may not want to use this sort of logic because Bush currently has one of the lowest approval ratings ever. It's lower than Nixon!!! In our country war time Presidents have always been reelected. Maybe that is why they voted for him the second time? That and because Kerry was totally uninspiring.

" One of the major problems we are facing in this country is the lack of attempt by the left to work with the right-(compromise)"

Come on bst. The Bush admin is the least compromising and most stubborn administration we've had in a very long time. You can't reasonable act as if the dems refuse to compromise while Bush is continuously offering an olive branch. The dems have a lot of shortcomings, but the republicans of late are simply terrible. You mention the dems throwing money at problems, why didn't you mention that fact that the Republicans threw more money at stuff than the democrats?

I can certainly understand the confusion we voters have.  We have some telling us bold-faced LIES!   Then we have to investigate and sort out the
truth from the half-truths, and their are others lacking the backbone to tell us the bold-faced truth.  If we voters don't get it right this time---then SHAME on us!

Andrew Sullivan had a good post on this subject today.

"It was an almost perfect line for the culture war [McCain] is still, alas, a part of. And it's a sign of some desperation. He wants to malign the Democrats as Woodstock hippies - still working after three decades! - while touting the torture "enhanced interrogation" he endured as a Viet Cong captive as an emblem of his patriotism. But notice how a politician still gets traction in our culture: not by addressing actual policies or even engaging current cultural arguments. He gets it by electro-charging up the ancient cultural divide that has prevailed since Vietnam and that still drives the boomers and those drawn into their orbit (i.e. the rest of us). This culture war is something we need to move beyond if we are to tackle the threats from abroad and make concrete, pragmatic reforms at home. And yet it's still indispensable in provoking the kind of emotional response that campaigns need to gain oxygen."

I couldn't agree more, but I'm also guilty as charged. Reading our comments here yields numerous examples of this problem.

    First, me
"They talk down to americans because that's all their base can understand."

Now, bst (I could have used most of his comment)
" but the Dem's answer to everything is throw more money at the problem. Take from the Rich-(which I might add includes many small businesses) & give to the less Rich."

Bloc......I don't know whether to laugh or scream at the walls. Now let's see!! Bush & Cheney are cowards, not because they ran to Canada, but because they recieved either deferrments or went into the National Guard. Oh! lets not forget how the Left made Congressmem Jack Muirda-sp or Senator Kerry above reproach because their status as War Heros. So as far as your concerned, its ok for the Dem's to parade out their war heros but lets demonize the Republicans for theirs. Your right about Bush's ratings being in the 30% range but did you happen to notice the Congress is in the low 20's. Bush can offer the Budget but it's Congress who controls the Purse Strings. Didn't the Gov't come to a tempory stand still during Clinton's watch because the Congress wouldn't give him a budget to sign? Where has all the extra spending gone under Bush? What I don't understand is you knocking McCain, he is aganist Torture, just like you. I gotta run again, I'll get to you latter. BST

"Bush's ratings being in the 30% range but did you happen to notice the Congress is in the low 20's"

I have, but did you notice that the Republicans in congress have a lower rating that the dems in congress?

"So as far as your concerned, its ok for the Dem's to parade out their war heros but lets demonize the Republicans for theirs."

I have no idea what your talking about. I think you are projecting ideas onto me that I don't have and have never articulated.

"What I don't understand is you knocking McCain, he is aganist Torture"

It depends on how you define "knocking" ;) I certainly take fault with some things McCain has done or said, but I'll wager that I've criticized hillary more than McCain here at SC. I'm not really sure what point you are making regarding McCain. Do you believe that I shouldn't criticize anything about anyone that has the same position as me on torture?

The problem I have with McCain, which is the same problem with most politicians, is that I don't know where he stands on most issues. In 2000 he called people like Jerry Falwell "agents of intolerance" and I couldn't agree more. During that campaign he said a lot of things I agree with. This campaign he is backtracking on many of those things. Many believe that he is doing this to win the Republican primary, but I'm left to wonder which are his true beliefs. I want a politician that says what they believe and McCain is showing that he isn't that person.

LJ: while i think the quoted section is overstated, i think the general sentiment, that the flurry of ad hominem nonsense we're seeing from the reds is indicative of a desire to avoid talking about ideas, is largely correct. frankly, i think that it's also b/c they realize that bush is an embarrassment in their hearts so the only way to get around that particular political millstone around their necks is to go into attack mode.

TS: heh..."they do it, too" is indeed weak tea. :D

Crisis averted! Or at least I hope so!
I think that McCain will win in November, now that he has chosen Sarah Palin as his VP running mate.......yeah it was a political maneuver....everyone knows that....
Opps more to the GOP BLUNDER: Sarah Palin's Teenage daughter is Pregnant. Yes. Preggers and we are suppose to possibly entrust the country to this woman should geezer McCain for any reason have to step aside, die,or unable to complete his term? She can't...

Does a president have to follow a specific curriculum to qualify? Should you have to be a career politician to be President? What other jobs or professions might build good credentials to lead politically?

It's a horrible form of government...
