I quit smoking about a week and a half ago.

So far, so good. I almost went and got some cigarettes, but I've been able to stick with it.

Next, I'll have to reduce my alcohol consumption and my compulsive internet use.

And then maybe even set some achievable goals, but lets not get too crazy here.

Congrats man. Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it about five hundred times. It's sticking with it that's the hard part. I wish you much success with that.

But like you said, don't get too crazy here. One addiction at a time.

Otherwise you'll end up in the nuthouse with a cigarette in one hand, a beer in the other, and a computer in your lap.

    Baby steps.

Oh, man. That's too close to the way I've been living for the past several months. Except that I would smoke outside, but yeah, you got the gist of it.

In fact, I've got the computer on my lap and a beer in my hand right now even though I'm trying to watch a movie.

And yes, I've quit smoking several times before. I can't even guarantee that this will be the last time, but hopefully.

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm forced to smoke outside too. You would think that would deter me more than it does. Maybe if I lived someplace colder?

I'm sure I'll quit again soon and maybe this time it will stick? Did you hear about that new drug they've got to help you stop?

Of course it's like an acid trip and makes you hallucinate all over the place and see dancing monkey's in your living room. But you wouldn't be smoking at least.

I think I'll just try the patch again. It's safer.

TS--Well, congratulations on quitting. Now, here's to staying quit. :)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 22, 2007....
Way to go!!!  Stick with it.  The first few weeks are the hardest.

As far as your other addictions, well, one thing at a time.  I think there'd be blood shed if someone tried to make me stop all of my favorite addictions at once.

Had that  habt, aint it a doozie? alcohol too, way back n my 20's, but now i wish i could go lighter on the coffee (Jo), no wht i mean?
  • TinSoldier said on Oct 22, 2007....
    Thanks for the comments.

At this point, I actually think that smoking is/was the easiest one to quit. Of the other two, I don't know which one will be more difficult.
  • silverwhisper said on Oct 22, 2007....
that's great, TS! but hey, easy on the cutting out internet, huh? :D

seriously, though: is this a willpower/cold turkey thing you're doing here re: smoking?

    ed
  • TinSoldier said on Oct 23, 2007....
Yup. I've been eating cold turkey for almost two weeks now.

The final push was the fact that my wife needed to have some teeth pulled and she wasn't supposed to smoke for 4-7 days afterwards.

Well, she only smoked because I did anyway and we knew it wouldn't work very well if only one of us quit so we both did.

    Thursday will be two weeks.

Heh -- cutting internet. If I could just cut back from my current online time to just 2-4 hours a day I would be doing well. I need to pick up reading books again.

Man, I tell you though, it can be as bad as a physical addiction. No joke.
  • silverwhisper said on Oct 23, 2007....
do you seriously think this is new information to me, TS? :>

    Nope. ;-)

TS well done for quitting. Hope you can stick it out.

Well, I thought I would check in with you since it has been several days now since you quit smoking and ask you how you are doing?  How's it going?  Are you still quit?  Glad you are addicted to online, though, because we sure would miss you.
  • TinSoldier said on Oct 29, 2007....
So far so good, thanks for asking.

Two and a half weeks so far. The cravings are still there but they are now just minor pangs; and at least the idea in my head is that if I started up again now then I would have thrown away a lot of hard work over the past couple of weeks.

I'll tell you how I quit, it may help.  I smoked for 10 years, I got to the point the only time I actually enjoyed a cigarette was right after I ate.  So I started smoking only after I ate.  I did this for about 2 years.  One day I decided this was ridiculous, if I could limit myself to just 3 or 4 a day I could surely quit.  So I did.  That was June of 1984.  I'll give you another tip, when you really want to quit you will, not a second before.
  • crybabylu said on Nov 05, 2007....
so, how are you doing not smoking, are yo still ok?
  • TinSoldier said on Nov 06, 2007....
Still okay. I almost broke this weekend but my wife, my rock, helped me through again.

    Thanks for asking!
  • crybabylu said on Nov 16, 2007....
time to check back in and see if you have stayed quit.  It has been 10 days since your last update, so, how goes it?.....lol,dee.
  • TinSoldier said on Nov 16, 2007....
I'm doing great! I still want one occasionally.

Now I just need to figure out how to handle my other addictions instead of letting them handle me.

But that's a different story and probably more difficult to deal with.

How about you, crybabylu? How are you doing with whatever bad habits that you may have? ;-)
  • crybabylu said on Nov 16, 2007....
one day at a time, ha! I'm fine, thanks for asking....lol,dee.
