The way we dress, the TV we watch, the sports we pick, etc all say something about the person we are.

At work I have two mugs.  One with Albert Einstein on it and the other one says "No Coffee, No Workee".  I suppose the Einstein mug appeals to me because I think brains are sexy.  His hairstyle also never fails to crack me up.  The other one obviously endorses my overblown love of coffee.

At home I have a pretty blue and green Starbucks mug that my daughter bought me for my birthday.  It's very curvy and cheerful looking.  Before she bought me that I had this wildly colored mug with "Oy Vey!" on the side.  Both reflect that my sense of humor and misplaced optimism is alive and well.

You know, I don't usually use traditional coffee mugs. I've got a bunch of those big travel mugs, and my favorite one is just plain silver. But I do have a few mugs people have given me with Far Side cartoons on them. I love those! But I drink so much coffee that if I used those little mugs, I'd be refilling them every five minutes.

ET - You need to buy one of those really supper jumbo sized ceramic mugs.  Just plain silver sounds like you "gave up" trying to express yourself.  I once had a travel mug with a little stir paddle at the bottom of it that you pressed a button on the handle to activate.  Now that's expressing yourself.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 18, 2007....
Maybe I express myself in silver? It means I'm shiny and I keep things warm with my thermal exterior! I honestly never realized my coffee mug choice could say so much about me. But that mug you're describing sounds cool!

Well I just love mugs but I haven't used one in a while, since it's been too damn hot to drink hot coffe BUT my favorite ones at home have to be my Playboy mugs, it cracks me up when I find the bf using the pink one that says playmate!!  Um...and my one with a cute little ducky on it that says "what the duck" I know cheesy oh and the one that says "I'm handing out ass kickins and lollypops and I'm fresh out of lollypops"....I have a couple at work one that says "I was anti-bush before it was cool" and one that says "I'll be nicer if you be smarter".... I have tons of starbucks ones too but that's because that place is an evil magnet for me!!  I like my pretty pink one I got from there at valentines day!  I could go on and on....
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
ET - I've never thought of you as having a thermal exterior, though you probably internalize a lot.  Yeah, that mug was great for hot cocoa, kept the stuff all mixed up.  I think one of my kids swiped it.  Damn kids!

tizzy - I love your mugs! (and I don't mean it that way)  I'd love to get the one about the lollypops.  I know just who could use it.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
Here's a link showing the self stirring coffee mug my kids swiped.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 18, 2007....
unique- I got a good laugh out of the no coffee, no workee. And the self-stirring mug I've got to get for my wife. We use cream and sugar and she runs the spoon around about twice in her mug.

We have a kitchen shelf of coffee mugs. Some are golden retriever and most of the others are Christmas. They both make me happy.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
BTV - I loved my self stirrer before those darn kids got ahold of it.  As for the coffee mug, well, my boss is a smart man and takes that mug seriously.
  • mobil said on Oct 18, 2007....
I don't drink coffee Uni, but on my mug, right under my top lip. I have a mustache
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 18, 2007....
mobil- You have a damned mustache? Great. Now I have to reassess everything about what I thought you looked like.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
mobil - wait!  Are you saying you have a mustache or that your mug has a mustache?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
BTV - I'm picturing him as a crusty ol' fart with a yosemite sam mustache

  • mobil said on Oct 18, 2007....

Many used to refer to the face as your Mug Uni, yes on my face. AND I resent the crusty old fart comment. I have no crust and I am quite young looking.

Beyond, relax, I just grow the mustache for hunting season, put a beard under it beginning real soon too. Hang on to that old image, right after Thanksgiving I'll be returning to those boyish good looks you have ingrained in your mind har har.

How do I express my personality through my mug? Effortlessly!

    What's on my mug?

Ummm... the logo or pattern the vendor's cups or paper cups happen to have on the side? I'm not one for washing dishes any more than necessary at the office! Disposable all the way!

(At home it's Plain Jane white, unbranded coffee mugs, and a few unbranded stainless steel travel mugs.)

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
Passion - unwilling to bear someone's logo at your own expense?  I find the taste of coffee or tea is better in a "real" mug.
  • ninjapirate said on Oct 18, 2007....
My favorite mug is one that's kind of big and curvy all a bright yellow with two big black eyes and a black smile.  It's basically a big yellow smiley face.  I think I actually saw the same mug on Friends once.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
ninja - I've seen them too.  I admit, that much happiness creeps me out, but you must be a very cheerful person.
  • more2methanthat said on Oct 18, 2007....

hmmm...almost all my mugs have some sort of image of TInkerbell on it.  The one at work is tall and thin, with the word COFFEE about Tink.

What does that say about me?  Probably that I am a tad obsessed with that darned pixie!

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
more2me - Me thinks you have a pixie fetish!  Can you spread magic powder on all of us and make us fly?
  • PassionTraveler said on Oct 18, 2007....
Nah, it's not expense, or support of a brand, or any warm fuzzy motivation, it's pure  conservation of effort ... ie... laziness! LOL. I hate washing dishes, so no mugs at the office for me.

    PT
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
PT - so convenience is the motivation.  I have to admit, if my conscience would tolerate it I would eat off of paper and plastic 3 times a day.

I have two fav mugs, one has sunflowers on it and Jenna bought it for me when we went to the Philadelphia Art Museum, and my other has the Plaza Hotel on it from a trip we took to NYC...there was nothing in the gift shop that we wanted, but we wanted a souvenir so voila!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 18, 2007....
bloc - I love penguins!  I'm hoping it doesn't have anything to do with their mating habits though.

Mamie - sunflowers suit you, and I would guess because it's a gift that adds sentimental value to it.
  • Battycat said on Oct 18, 2007....
I have 2 mugs I like, 1 at work and 1 at home.
My home one says "I understand the concept of cooking and cleaning, just not how it relates to me"

My work one says "I try to watch what I eat, I'm just not fast enough"

  • wombat said on Oct 18, 2007....

    No. 1 Mom--that's my favorite.

I like my boss's cup--which says--  "Don't worry, If I bite your head off, I will spit it back out."

  • quietone said on Oct 18, 2007....

mobils "mug" omg...they do that out there for hunting too? geesh.

  • LadyGamer said on Oct 18, 2007....

I have no idea. I used to have a green one that looked like granite. Then I had one with cherries on it. Then I had one that was.... blue? Maybe? I honestly don't know. My children break them faster than I can buy them so I generally just use styrofoam at work when I opt for a warm beverage. Hot chocolate or a nice hot tea.

Not much of a coffee person.

  • botoni said on Oct 18, 2007....
My cupboards were once full of mugs. Everyone in the known world gave me mugs as gifts. Many with awful quotable sayings, none the same size and none matching. I knew the OCD thing kicked in when I could nt decide which fricken mug to use! So they all went to thrift store and now I only use the ones that came with my everyday dishes. Of course having to have all mugs matching and the same size says something about OCD to I think.....lol
  • LadyGamer said on Oct 18, 2007....
Oh! I have the mugs that came with my Fiesta! But we never never touch those my precious. NO!
  • Me-Myself&I said on Oct 19, 2007....

i have another thats just a big coffee house mug, with an italian flair..
but most of the time, i am like PT.... the vendors logo cups...  hey as long as its coffee, its good.... :)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 19, 2007....

Batty - LOL Your mugs would fit in nicely with my collection.

wombat - He really actually uses that at work?  I need to see that one.

Eilan - I take it the price was right for those.  I actually have 2 company mugs, one with each name the company has had since I was hired.

dyingman - I've seen that mug.  It's very cool.

quietone - nothing wrong with the truth ;)

Ladygamer - I sympathize with with the loss of mugs.  I've lost some great ones when my kids were younger. LOL about the "precious"

botoni - do you line up the handles so that they're all the same direction? (I actually do that with my dish set mugs)

MM&I - I take it you like flowers?  Do you garden?

Gypsy - I like the big coffee house mugs.  My Albert mug takes two trips for the same buzz as my Starbucks mug.

  • Zayda said on Oct 19, 2007....
The few coffee mugs that I do have with stuff on them are Virginia Tech mugs: two 1999 Big East Champions with their 11-0 record on it and a VT mug with my name and the VT logo on it.

Oh, and we have a coffee mug with a scene from Disney's Fantasia on it.

The rest of my coffee mugs are plain pottery mugs. My favorite one is a tall mug that is blue and brown. And then there are the coffee cups that came with my Fiestaware as well as the large cappuccino mugs (that double as soup mugs some days) that came with my Fiestaware as well. Those are simply the color of my Fiestaware. (I purposely have 8 place settings of Fiestaware all in different colors--red, green, orange, yellow so I have a coffee cup and a cappuccino mug in each of those colors.)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 19, 2007....
Zayda - you have no shortage of mugs, that's for sure.  Do you like the tall one because it holds a lot or just because it looks good?
  • Eilan said on Oct 19, 2007....
u-i: Yeah, the price was right for most of the flying wheel stuff we own. I think we received the mugs I use as gifts when my husband retired, come to think of it.
  • Alyss said on Oct 19, 2007....
I have several that have been given to me by children I have taught and the one I have at work says 'I ate spellinz' which, whilst could be annoying, is special because of who it was given by.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 19, 2007....

Eilan - When my company moved about 2 years ago they were giving away the stuff that had built up in the PR closet.  I saw people walk out the door with cases of mugs and glasses, polo shirts, jackets, duffel bags, etc.  I don't think I'd want that many reminders of work at home.

Alyss - sentimental value is definately a consideration when you're choosing your mugs.

  • wombat said on Oct 19, 2007....
uniquely-ironic:   My boss is a she, and yes, she uses the cup.  It has a cartoon drawing of something familiar,(woman in an office setting)  but I can't place it...

    wombat - priceless!!
  • botoni said on Oct 19, 2007....
OH for pity sake! Of course the handles all face the same direction!
  • Zayda said on Oct 19, 2007....
U-I: I like the tall one because it holds more beverage plus it just looks good!

And yes, I have no shortage of mugs. In fact, I'm not sure I listed all the mugs we have, plus I didn't mention the silver travel mugs like e_t is fond of. I also have a Japanese tea set, but that is packed away as we don't use it much right now.
