Let me give a scenario to ask a simple question. You are, for whatever reason, exiled on a tiny island and given the only house to live in. You can walk one end to the other in an hour, your only company are birds that fly in from the sea.

Your basic needs are taken care of by one person who delivers them once a month. There is no tv, no radio, no telephone, no contact with the outside world.

You will be supplied one form of entertainment for the five years you will be there.

This is the list:

novels- Access to all novels ever written.

newspapers & magazines- Your choice, both up to date & past issues.

science- All writings on any science, up to date & past.

religious-
Any bibles or religious writings.

artistic & craft supplies-Anything you can do by hand.

movies- You have a large screen & player. Not everything on tv, just movies.

music- Take your pick, you have a terrific music system.

You are at the landing ready walk to your new home for the next five years,

they are waiting for an answer. What do you choose?

C'mon Beyond, what kind of list is that, five years? I could stand on my head on the Island for five years, but not with that list.

You just gotta throw sex in that entertainment list Buddy, even if it's with the girl bringing the supplies. Make it twenty years and throw in the sex and I am a registered voter on that island Beyond. Give me multiple sexy partners and they can bury me there.

    BeyBey......LOL.......laughing for Mob's comment...

I am torn between Newspaper/magazines and Movies......i want be in touch whit what is happening in the world and magazines often have a literature section so i can easily found something to read .....Movies have great music sometimes and they talk of such a wide variety of topics so i will find in them religion and science and other stuff to ponder about ....Art and craft..i dont need them...i am sure i will find material on the island....

So let's do 2 years and half supply of Newspaper/magazine and 2 years and half supply of movies.....

BUT i want my delivery guy to be gorgeous and sexy and allowed to stay with me at least for one week end at month......at least......lol...

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 16, 2007....
    Novels.  Hands down.

You can improve crafts, TV is just a babysitter for the mind, music I can make myself, magazines and stuff just discuss what's trendy and not what's relevant, so novels are my choice.
  • Battycat said on Oct 16, 2007....
I can't decide between newspapers and movies, probably newspapers, I'd want to know what was going on in the world :-)
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 16, 2007....
mobil- Geez, nobody is exiled with beautiful women. That's not exile, that's ecstasy. However, magazines are available, I'm sure you could find women there.

ginsoul- Geez, again. You can't have two! But I do like your description of why you'd want the ones you chose. By the way, the delivery guy is a 78 year old grumpy and obnoxious fisherman that smells like his work. mobil will be thrilled about that also.

unique- hmmm... make music by yourself, I hadn't thought of that. I knew novels would come up, just didn't know when. They are on my short list, I haven't decided yet.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 16, 2007....
batty- Ah, another decision between newspapers and movies. I thought about being kept up to date, but I don't really keep up to date now. Between these, I'd choose movies. I'm just not a news junky.
  • queenparanoia said on Oct 16, 2007....
ohhhh so hard to decide!!!!!!!!!! but i'll go to movies...

Wow - an actual island all to myself?

There's just one problem. I like to read, but I also like to write. If I say novels, does that mean the guy won't give me paper or pens or a manual typewriter and ribbons?
  • Expendable said on Oct 16, 2007....
Does reference books count as artistic supplies? What about a laptop and printer?
  • ninjapirate said on Oct 16, 2007....
Music hands down.  My second would probably be novels, but music ah can't live without that.  It can uplift you and help you feel things you have only memories about.  I suppose a book can do something simliar, but music is better at it for me.
  • Me-Myself&I said on Oct 16, 2007....

ok.....all i need for my 5 years on this tiny island (hope not too tiny) is my artistic and craft

supplies. *smile*  i bet you that after 5 years- i could open a chain of stores with the things

that my hands had made. the person dropping off my basic needs would need to bring coffee,

sugar and milk as a must needed thing too. see ya

  • CreativeWoman said on Oct 16, 2007....
It would be a hard choice.  I think I would go with movies though.  I love to read, but I think movies would keep me better entertained over that time span.

  • wild-ting said on Oct 16, 2007....
Definitely music. But it would have to be selections from the past and choices from current/new. Just like the offerings for science and newspapers & magazines.

Why was religious italicize in the list? Was that an attempt at a subliminal message, or to lead the reader to think more about religion?

Every novel ever written?  Novels, definitely.  I wouldn't complain if some non-fiction found its way into the delivery, I actually prefer non-fiction over most current fiction.

  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 16, 2007....
queen- It looks like a lot are going to the movies.

quiet- Movies fill a good portion of my life too.

hillbilly- We can't have entertainment on the boat too!

expendable- Paper, pens and manual typewriter fall under arts & crafts. I don't know about the laptop though.

ninja- I wondered when music would come up. Its good for a lot of people.

memyself- Arts & crafts I would put some thought into also. I've done a few and really like this. Coffee (with cream & sugar) is a must.

CW- Tough decision. Movies are more of a lively entertainment.

secret- You know, I agree. That little island sounds better the more I think about it. (I had a feeling you would pick books).

wild-thing- All the new and old you can handle. Religion was italicized by hitting the wrong button on the computer. I noticed but forgot to change it- no messages.

mylove- ha ha, you won't be there! Very funny. I'm here now and don't care much about the so called news we get.
  • Expendable said on Oct 16, 2007....
unless there's internet on the island I don't see how a laptop is any different from letting someone watch movies on a tv.

If I decide to write, can some of what's sent with me be reference books? Dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, How to write Mysteries, etc?
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Oct 16, 2007....
I choose science. If I could view my isolation as a five-year study period, I could survive pretty easily, I think.

My second choice would be novels, third music, fourth newspapers/mags. Creating doesn't require being able to craft/write down what my mind conjures, as I could do that later on (and I'm sure I could write in the margins of the science texts if I found anything with which to make ink - birds could provide the quills).

  • TinSoldier said on Oct 16, 2007....
    Newspapers and magazines, hands down.

And paper and pens/pencils to make my own media. If I can't have both, then I would take the newspapers and magazines and recycle them to make my own.

Although I could have done this several years ago, nowadays without SoulCast and my forums then it would be pure torture ;-) !
  • wombat said on Oct 16, 2007....
Novels--no question about it.  I can pack tonight if I can go there in the morning....
  • wombat said on Oct 16, 2007....
Oh, I can't pack anything?  Nevermind, if everything else is taken care of, then the novels will do just fine!
  • OldSoul said on Oct 16, 2007....
Without question, it would be novels. I have enough on my to read list now to last five years, and I already own most of them. I just can't see to find the time. But, hey, let's talk about the important stuff...can I bring my vibrator and a five year supply of batteries?
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 16, 2007....
expendable- Movies aren't watched on tv, they get a player and a screen. But ok, reference books allowed for writing. (you're a wheeler-dealer, aren't you?)

infernal- You're certainly the resourceful one (quills from the birds). You could get a science book that tells how to make ink. Can you make ink from the coals of a fire?

tin- If you know how to make pens/pencils and ink from newspapers, you need to let me and infernal know how. I'd miss SC and a few other things also, but the longer I think about this, the better it sounds.

wombat- The way you, secret, and I are talking there may be a group there. But then that would ruin the atmosphere of being alone, wouldn't it?

oldsoul- ha ha, vibrator- cool- that's so funny I'd have to let it through.

wild-ting- I misread your username, sorry, won't happen again.

ha!!!.... i choose 2 years of magazines and newspapers, 2 years of artistic and crafts supplies then 1 year worth of novels!!! well that would be enough for me to keep me busy for 5 years... oh by the way are you sure i cant bring Fudge with me?
  • hotaka said on Oct 17, 2007....
It's a tough choice because I love music and reading science books. But ultimately I think I would want to document my explorations of my tiny island and the weather. Therefore I would choose my cameras and enough film as well as computer access for the smaller digital camera.

But honestly I don't think it's enough to keep me occupied for five years. I need a bigger island with a mountain in the middle.
  • destinydiva said on Oct 17, 2007....
what a cool question...but I am struggling to decide!!
So I am gonna work by elimination.....
I would want to spend the time reflecting... so wouldnt choose movies
I read a lot in real life so I wouldnt choose novels
I would see the 5 years as an escape so I wouldnt want to keep up with the outside world so defo not magazines and newspapers,

now heres my struggle..music or art supplies???

see 5 years all to myself I could create some mighty good stuff :-)
But 5 years without music???   hmmmmmm
can I have two?? please??  :-)
    music and craft

There will be songs in them and I will be visually satisfied too. Lol! I love multi tasking and am quite demanding too ;)

Newspapers and magazines because I can cover most of the subjects you list with newspapers and magazines.  I rarely watch movies and as much as I love music, I forgo it for newspapers and magazines.  Besides, I can cut a flute from wood and possibly, depending on natural resources, perhaps even carve and string a guitar or violin and make my own music.  I could probably make my own craft and art supplies with resources on the Island.  Newspapers and magazines by far give the widest range of options.
  • crybabylu said on Oct 17, 2007....

I would definitely choose Arts & Crafts.

  • GypsyRoseII said on Oct 17, 2007....
haha, good post...really got the brain thinking this early... thank God for coffee :-)

well let's see, although the list is pretty unappealing, but if i were in that situation and those were my choices....

I wouldn't  choose novels- too much fantasy, id go crazy....

Newspapers & magazines- id be happy to be away from the bad news, but i'd know what to expect on my return and i'd be mad if i couldn't go shopping for the new flirty fashions

Science- although i could be the inventor of a cure for all those incurable diseases and what not, i don't have the brains and would be in constant need of tutoring

Religious writings- well, i would have lots of time to spend with God in prayer and probably at some point we'd sit together by the fire and talk..haha plus, i can always pray that time goes bye really fast, that a man get sent to me for company, that dish network discovers my island and gives me free satellite service for life with the brand new big screen TV , or  i could pray that its all a bad dream and i wake up..... the possibilities are endless... haha

Artistic & Craft supplies - this is good as i would probably create amazing paintings or i can ask for tires, a lawn mower motor, a piece of plywood, and a steering wheel and create my own little go cart to race the lions once in a while....

Movies - again it would just be a painful reminder of the world im not going to have access to for five years... too painful  Id miss everything so much...

Music - thats already provided with all the wild things in the jungle that make music on their own, i just gotta put words to them and walaaaaa!!!  Music hall here we come

So i guess i would choose Religious writings, I mean God says in his word if you have faith as a mustard seed you would say to the mountain move from here and get over there and it would move.... so maybe if i build my faith enough i could tell the island to move closer to my home and it would...haha

i know, i know... im just too crazy

sweet- Oh dear, I forgot about Fudge. I forgot about my own dogs. Why didn't I put pets as one of the options? This is something to give thought to. But sorry, you can only have one.

hotaka- Photography could fall under the arts & crafts. But that's a lot of picture taking. If I were you, I'd go for the music. A mountain would change everything, wouldn't it? I love my mountains also.

des- I like the way you worked that out. But honestly, between the two you are left with, the arts & crafts would fill more of my time. At least its activity.

desert- Hey, that's a thought, you could act with the movies. And with all the music in movies you could sing along. In a couple years you could be a star, at least to the birds on the island.

pickers & lady- Two more for novels. If you're a serious reader, this would be hard to give up.

galileo- I was wondering when someone would mention musical instruments. Although I don't play one, arts & crafts made me think I'd like to build a guitar also. Do you really think you could build one from the island itself?

crybabylu- I'm definitely leaning toward arts & crafts myself.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 17, 2007....
gypsy- That's a good choice if it would keep you occupied. But I have serious doubts about moving the island close to home. A go cart, there's an idea. But I couldn't build an engine, I'd have to pedal it.
  • silverwhisper said on Oct 17, 2007....

Hey, beyond. It's also a lot of sitting and contemplating wave movement, seasonal change, the passage of clouds, clear starry nights, and twilight skies. It means exploring the bark of trees, what grows on fallen logs, what lies between the rocks on the shore and the vein patterns of leaves. It means watching how the light sparkles in the ripples, flickers through the leaves and branches and dances on the waves at sunset or sunrise. I would definately be occupied. But as I said, room to move and to get up high would be more interesting.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 18, 2007....
hotaka- I've always been interested in hiking, camping, exploring (caves is a big one), and just seeing what was out there in general. Regardless of what I chose and arts & crafts seems to be the one, I'd be doing a lot of what you described. You bring up a good point.

beyond -- i don't need 5 seconds to make my decision on this... :-) easily, i'd choose newspapers and magazines. if allowed a second source of entertainment, i'd probably ask for lots and lots of unruled notebooks and pens -- write my own books, movie scripts, music, and sketch like there was no tomorrow. add ginger into the brew, and i won't even think of leaving after the five years are up...lol.

  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 19, 2007....
moon- You fooled me! I would have bet my arm up to here you would choose arts & crafts for drawing and painting. And if ginger or kruuyai was there, I'd probably die before the time was up chasing them around the island.
  • moonriver said on Oct 19, 2007....
beyond -- look at it this way, my friend. for me, these past years have been an impossible swirl of high mobility, high tech, and info glut. so in real life, the outdoors, art, music and poetry would be my perfect escape hatch.

but if i were confined for 5 yrs in an isolated island, my escape would be the exact opposite: keeping track of the world at large. and athletics to keep myself fit. the chasing might be a good limbering-up exercise hahaha.
