Today was my first day of my new job and I wanted to let everyone know how it went…….so far so good! I really think I am going to like it there. Everything is so much more laid back than what I’m used to. There are no emergencies to attend to. And very little surprises. We know who is coming in and when and what they are having done. It’s very nice to have an actual schedule!
My first task was to get the surgery patients prepped for their procedures. And I tagged along with another nurse and she has this practiced speech she gives everyone about what to expect from the anesthesia. Most people are concerned they won’t wake up, or that they’ll be sick when they wake up. And they worry about the IV hurting too. So she tells them this speech while she’s hooking them up to the monitors about how the IV doesn’t hurt because we numb it. And that with the mixture of medications we use, people rarely get sick after. And they always wake up.
She told me it would be good of me to remember what she said and try to tell the patients the same sort of thing. So when it was my turn to do this later on by myself, I just recycled most of what she said. And when I got the part where I told my patient that no one ever really gets sick from this, some guy in the curtain next to us started barfing his guts up……LOL! Perfect timing! He was ruining my speech!! The patient sort of looked at me and I just laughed and said that no one gets sick except that guy. She’d be fine. What else could I tell her?? It was funny though and she had a good sense of humor about it. (and she didn’t get sick later either so I wasn’t a liar)
I enjoyed working in the recovery a lot because there were not too many patients, and each of us only had one to take care of most of the time. You can give much better care that way and I like that.
In the late afternoon, all of my recovery patients were gone. And it was time for me to go help Dr. Clooney with consultations. That was even easier because all I really had to do was stand there and listen. I learned more about boob jobs though! And I had to help with measurements and things like that while the doctor took pictures. I’m really excited to see how these surgeries turn out too! A few of the women who came in for the consultations didn’t look to me like they needed any help. But some of the others will probably be soooo much happier when they get this done. To see their faces when they would look at the computer model, you could tell they would feel much better about themselves and be more confident.
All in all, I really enjoyed my first day. Everyone seems really nice and I had lunch with my friend too. That was fun! Usually at my other job I would just eat by myself in the break room. Very boring. So I’m already much happier and it’s only the first day! I hope it will stay like this. I’m so glad I got the job!
