it's always fun to watch an old movie or TV show and suddenly recognize someone who's big now, but was just starting out then. elsewhere i was involved in a discussion along those lines, when someone mentioned seeing adam baldwin, who i know primarily from firefly but has done a bit of work prior, esp in independence day as a surly (who knew?) officer.

so this of course gave me an idea for a...

[wait for it!]

poll! :D

what was the most entertaining such discovery you had recently?

I tend to have after-the-fact "duh" moments. My most recent one was finally putting two-and-two together and realizing that Lisa Loeb (you probably know her for at least this song) is the voice I vaguely recognized in one of the kiddie channel songs we (little one and I) like a lot.

I can't believe it took me so long to figure that out - that's worse than not immediately recognizing Jeremy Irons as the voice of Scar in The Lion King, and he's in my top five!

I was actually watching part of Independence Day recently and I didn't know Adam Baldwin was in it until then. Funny you should mention it. He seems to pop up quite a lot, but he does play almost the same character in everything I've ever seen him do!

But while I was flipping through channels, I saw some of the movie Hot Shots with Charlie Sheen. And I realized that Jon Cryer was also in that movie. I had no idea the two of them had acted together before Two and a Half Men.

    Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, got nothing.
I'm totally clueless.  It was only recently that I figured out that Mr. Rogers did all the voices in the land of make believe.
    I'm sloooooooooooooooooow.

Ed- I enjoyed watching Kirstie Alley punch the Enterprise into warp seven on Star Trek- Next Generation.

Ashley Judd was on next generation also.

infernal: i know a little bit about lisa loeb but haven't had any reason to watch kids' shows. but that's really funny about jeremy irons--he's such a good bad guy, isn't he?

e_t: man, i'd forgotten cryer was in that! i of course always liked him since pretty in pink. that's freaky about ID4, though--weird! and yeah, have you seen him in NBC's new show chuck? he's surly there, too, although not quite the "i'll be in my bunk" guy he was as jayne...

pickers: aw, c'mon, surely you noticed stuff like that before? there must've been one occasion, no?

queen: mm...emma thompson is yummy but more importantly, incredibly talented, no question!

beyond: i know exactly which TNG episode you mean. was kirstie alley in TNG? i knew she was in wrath of khan...

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were both in Field of Dreams--they were basically extras for a few shots in the film. They were part of the crowd at the baseball stadium where they filmed the scenes with Costner and James Earl Jones.

Recently I watched the movie Coma, which I had seen before but never realized that an early patient who has about 2 lines and then dies, is a pre-Magnum PI Tom Selleck.  Apparently Selleck was also a contestant on The Dating Game before he got famous.

quietone: I am a huge Jack Nicholson fan. I think his first role was in Little Shop of Horrors in the early 60's but I remember him very well from Easy Rider (1969?). In fact, I think he was in the Easy Rider poster I had on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager!

Oh wow, beyond - you said that about Ashley Judd and I just went "OMG, I remember now - I never put her name with her face in TNG before!"

How about "Hey I didn't know "she" was in that?" :P

Nichelle Nichols, perhaps best known as Lieutenant Uhura from Star Trek, played Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s Mother in Snow Dogs. She currently has a part in Heros.

actorguy ~ yes I think that was the one I saw...easy rider. thanks.

beyond: yeah, i'll cheerfully confess i'm a great big geek. :>

super z: oddly, i've never seen field of dreams so i'll have to keep that in mind should i ever do so. and drats, you've discovered my secret--i'm actually a misogynist! :p that's cool to know about nichelle nichols--i know that george takei also appears in heros. heh...maybe they can work in other surviving original ST cast members? :>

actorguy: a surprising number of celebrities have appeared on the dating game, including steve martin.

infernal: funny thing, that, isn't it? did you know that liz taylor appeared in an episode of the original star trek?

    Okay, I thought of one.
I love musicals and always wanted to see this live because I've heard it's amazing.
But, it was not to be, so I rented the movie.  This movie was actually made before it was turned into a musical and guess who was in it?

That's from The Little Shop of Horrors, by the way.
I think Jack's even creepier than he was in The Shining.

There is a movie that I watched that has a ton of people who were on Buffy at one time or another. It's called Can't Hardly Wait. It has Seth Green in it. But it takes place at a party, and many of the partygoers were characters on Buffy. Like Amber Benson playing a stoner. And whoever that girl was that played the invisible girl Marcy. I can't even remember them all. But for a Buffy fan, the movie has lots of little cameos of people you'd recognize.

pickers: it's weird to see some of his early work, isn't it?

e_t: i heard about that movie but never knew that. i'll have to add it to the queue. :>

I know it's happened to me, but I'm not recalling much at the moment.

As an aside to the topic, my dad will think he recognizes actors "when they were young" in movies.  He is usually wrong, but you'll never convince him otherwise. :-)

can i just say how great a boon imdb.com is at settling those kinds of disputes? my wife & i were disagreeing about whether an actor in a bit part from an 80s movie was someone we recognized from elsewhere: she thought it was one person, i thought it was another.

thanks to imdb, we now know: we were both wrong! :>

oddly enough, the mrs just reminded me that this actor, paul winfield, appeared both in babylon 5 as well as the wrath of khan.

I went to the video store looking for films to buy, but they were all chick flix. Are all of the good movies from the past?
I ended up buying that old movie MASH which was fun, but very old. Donald Sotherland is always good, but I want something new...
