keyboard

I was doing a little desktop cleaning yesterday and started giggling when I got to my keyboard.  No, I haven't become completely unhinged, I was looking at my A and E key on the keyboard.  I have so diligently typed my way to the point where my E looks like an F and my A looks like a forward slash.  Good thing I type by memory. (no hunt and peck for me or I'd be toast)

This all made me think of the old tootsie pop commercials where the owl, wearing a graduation cap, so smartly conducts his own experiment on how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop.  Apparently the wise and scientific conclussion is 3, since that's how many times you lick it before you just bite into the candy to get to the chocolate center.  So, now I have been pondering how many keystrokes I make a day and how many key strokes it takes to wear the letters off your keyboard.

On a practical note, I may have to find a way to convince the IT people that a new keyboard is a good idea.  God forbid I should have to wear all of the letters off my keyboard.

unique- Since I type with my index fingers, mine should last a very long time- except for the food it collects. Speaking of food, do I see the trailings of chips on yours?

BTV - I could probably feed a small third world nation on what falls into my keyboard.  I'm bad about keeping food and drinks at my desk.

uniquely ~ ( hehe beyond) -  ha...there ya go, your cheap eats!  LOL couldn't help myseslf again!  anyway, just in this post, you musta worn another mile off the "e" and "a".  must be the most popular vowels we use?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 11, 2007....
quietone - Good one!!!  Yes, I've tried sucking the crumbs off the keyboard, but it makes my bosses look funny at me.  I'd guess that A and E are the most popular, but I'm curious as to why there are no constanents (sp?) as worn.  Seems like S or T should be wearing as well.

That's funny! Actually my PC keyboard at home is pretty destroyed. I'm missing letters too, but I can't remember which ones off hand. I'll have to look at it when I get home. My laptop seems to have heartier keys that don't wear off as fast! But my regular keyboard is trashed. I've got crumbs and sticky stuff and who knows what else lurking in there. I'm glad I'm not the only one who admits to having a gross keyboard!

ET - I'd be curious to know which keys you wear out too.  I think more people than will admit to it are guilty of "crummy keyboard" syndrom.

hey, does anyone else have the problem of wearing away a spot in the spacebar from just the one thumb hitting it all the time? :>

SW - guilty!  Its the slick, shiny spot from my right thumb

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 11, 2007....
My left side shift key is also got a wear spot on it

I'm completely missing the letters off my d, e, c, i, l and n keys. The m and s are about half worn off, and I have a shiny spot on the space bar.  The v, b and o are in pretty bad shape, too.   I have to laugh when guests want to use  my computer to check their email.  It's amazing how many people never learned how to type!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 11, 2007....
kruuyai - You have my total respect.  You are a true keyboard warrior!!  Typing by touch is becoming a lost art, one that I value more now than when learning it in high school.
  • kruuyai said on Oct 11, 2007....
uniquely:  I sure hope it's not becoming a lost art. Not considering how dependent we are on the keyboard these days compared to back then. I don't think I could survive if I didn't touch type.  I don't know how anyone does.

i'm surprised that there's apparently a decline in typing skill--indeed, i'd have thought the reserve was true given how prevalent e-mail and other forms of keyboard-based writing are!

kruuyai - Well, if my children's schools are any indication, it is not much of a priority these days.  Both kids can type a passable 20 words per minute, which is horrible in my eyes.  But, I'm a dinosaur who learned to type on a manual type writer and *gasp* even used carbon paper and correction fluid.

The bigger question is, can they eat off the keyboard like their mother? :)
  • exhibit_c said on Oct 11, 2007....
I've got a shiny spot on the spacebar. Also a buildup of grapham cracker crumbs beneath the keys.

Most keyboards are very inexpensive these days. Well, "cheap" may be the better word.

SW - You would think that having "lightening fingers" would be encouraged, but I'm not seeing any training beyond really basic skills.

exhibit - Another fan of the keyboard and food combo!  Yes, keyboards are cheap and I have talked to the IT guy.  Apparently my computer is so ancient that the keyboard uses an uncommon connection at the back of the computer.
  • kruuyai said on Oct 11, 2007....
That is just so illogical that kids aren't being trained to type.  I almost don't know how to write longhand anymore... lol.  Uniquely, I learned on a manual, too.  I remember we thought it was so cool when the IBM's came out with those little balls where you could change the fonts and even had a correction tape key.  We thought the future had arrived.  If we only knew!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 11, 2007....
kruuyai - Yes! I remember those.  My class was about 12 people big and we only had 2 of the electric typewriters, so we would rotate them every day.  I do think my skills are better for having to use a manual typewriter.  I know my piano playing skills benefited from the extra strength I got from pounding those keys.

I've only had this keyboard in the 6-12 month range, but my L is gone, and O, C, V, B, S, the >. key, _ and both shifts are wearing badly. Left CTRL is starting to go, and the 2 on the number pad. I also have two shiny spots on my spacebar, and a few crumbs between the keys. :-D

TIO - Another keyboard warrior!!!!  (the crowds go wild, victory dance in progress)  I must admit I'm relieved that I'm not the only one who mangles keyboards.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 11, 2007....
Okay so I'm home now. And my keyboard is just so trashed. Luckily I don't need to see the keys to type because most of my letters are rubbed off. I'm missing most of the letters A, S, D, E, T, O, and L. And like others, I've got that pretty shiny spot on my space bar too. And I'm missing one of my alt keys because I pried it off. My hand kept resting on it when I'd type and it would open all these shortcuts and screw everything up. So I popped it off! My keyboard looks like I got it out of the trash, but I'm not parting with it yet! My hands are used to typing on it and I don't want a new one unless I have to :-P

    a-ha! unintentional keyboard shortcutter! :D

ET - I would never have thought of prying off a key to keep from accidentally shortcutting, but I imagine it works.  I understand the familiarity, it's like jeans that are all broken in.
