Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in Canada.  We re going to do it up right at my house.  The turkey went into its brine this morning.  Right now its soaking in a wonderful saline concoction infused with herbs and spices.  In the morning it ll get thoroughly rinsed a number of times before its laid to rest breast down on a bed of onions, celery and carrots.  It ll roast for an hour at 450 F then it ll finish for a few hours at 300 F.  It ll be pulled to rest in foil tent, the veggie bed will be discarded and a luscious gravy will be produced from the drippings that will be enriched with poultry broth.

Apples, onions, celery are already chopped for the dressing.  The dried bread has been crumbled and mixed with sage, poultry seasoning, rosemary, tyme and garlic.  In the morning they ll be mixed together with sausage meat, bacon drippings, oysters, eggs and milk to be baked in the other oven.  The sticky gooey pumpkin cake has filled the house with the wonderous aromas of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice.  Its crispy cashew nut topping is baked to a mouth watering golden brown.  Its waiting for the rum seasoned whipped cream to top it.

The potatoes are peeled and diced, sitting in salt water waiting for their turn to cook.  The yams have been pared and chopped.  They ll be boiled and mashed in the morning.  Then they ll be casseroled and topped with brown sugar and chopped walnuts before a brief sojourn under the broiler.  The lettuce, radishes, carrots and green onions are waiting in the crisper.  Grammas sourcream/vinegar/sugar dressing will dress them once they re prepped at the last minute.  Fluffy freshly baked buns are golden capped and ready to serve.  A gallon jug of new apple cider is chilling.  Newly made pickles are ready to be served and there ll be a bowl of hot banana pepper pickles waiting for those who crave a turkey bun later in the day.

My daughter Erin and her husband Dave will join Allan, Dexter and I around 1 pm.  We ll have our traditional meal as we share around the table all the things we have to be thankful for and about.   Erin will be thankful that their brand new baby will arrive anyday.  Dave will be thankful that he had obtained a wonderful new job today.  Allan will express his gratefullness for having two loving dogs to adore him.  Dexter will be greatful that he has a new outlook on life because he has learned to control some of his OCD issues.  And I will be thankful for these things......

Botbabes, that sounds wonderful. . .you should post us a pic!  YUM!  I wish you a very happy thanksgiving.  In the countries I have lived in there has not been Thanksgiving as a set celebration, and so I've never partaken in one, I have only ever seen it on TV.  Thank you that I can be there with you in spirit today :-))

    Blessings! Polar

Happy Thanksgiving.  Your gathering sounds lovely.  I see that you have much to be thankful for.  You are indeed blessed.

You have my thanks as well.  For allowing me a peek into this gathering, filled with so much love and warmth.  Also, it was about time I stopped my myopic navel gazing and looked at things greater than myself.  I guess I needed another reminder.

Hope you enjoy and cherish the new memories you make...

OMG, is it already Thanksgiving!? It is still sooooooo freakin hot and humid over here, in Israel, it is hard to place myself in that cool thanksgiving mood.

But yeah, you've made that turkey sound extremely unkosher, which lets me assume that it must be delisious. Unfortunatelly, I could never have pork, or sea food, especially not milk and meat cooked together. But I do understand the mix of these tastes and aromas. I can imagine the smells filling up your home, I can imagine the table of celebration too.

I wish you a happy Thanksgiving, my dear! I wish I could invite you over to my home once, when back in the States, to a Jewish style Thanksgiving, so we could enjoy this holiday together. But till than, I'm glad you have such excellent writting skills, so I was able to "experience" your joy.

We'll be here to welcome you back waiting for stories from the holiday!

Since I'm still kind of new (4 days, I think), I have been surfing the blogs, and thought I would still comment on this one, even tho the last one says 11 days ago....What a lovely family you have, and that you still get together for family traditions...We do to, but that is more of a credit to my daughters than to me...They each take turns having the family at their house...Don't know what is planned on our "Turkey" day in November, but if it is half as much as yours...It will be truly wonderful...LOL, Dee
