A mOOn platOOn Special Edition

Being a user of SoulCast, I’m interested in tracking the number of views to my blog and my posts. And being me, I like to keep track of these tracks.

Not only have I been tracking my own blog, but a couple of others for the sake of comparison and verification. In particular, I’ve been watching the spectacular climb of The Naked Professor’s most notorious post since I wrote about it http://www.soulcast.com/post/show/85506/Everybody-On-The-SoulCast-Block%3A-WAS-DANCIN%E2%80%99-TO-THE-JAILHOUSE-COCK%21

I have been copying these stats straight off the pages of SoulCast, having captured the numbers on September 5, 11, 19, 22, 25 and October 3…

Twenty-six views wiped out??? How can the count be 1403 views on September 19, but only 1377 on September 22? Which is exactly what they were on September 11 – 1377!

In the next example, 15 views are obliterated over four readings…

And so on September 19 there are 597 views, but three days later there are only 584 views! What happened to those views?

A closer look showed me that almost all of TNP’s posts had been artificially “retarded” between September 19 and September 22. Compare these readings from September 19…

Why are these posts “losing” views? Are you tracking your posts?

Why is The Naked Professor being stripped of views? Is someone sabotaging the accuracy of the SoulCast tabulators? Is there a critical flaw in the software? Is TNP being clipped? Is Google Adsense at fault somehow, and is this why no one is getting paid?

As someone who works hard to publish an interesting blog, I want to know that accurate accounts are being made of the visitors to that site. I am no longer confident that that is the case.

    you know, it's possible that if comments were deleted the views att'd with the user whose comment was deleted might explain it, but that assumes that SC connects the page view with a given user ID and i don't think that's at all wise to assume.

    What are you implying? That someone is deliberately going on TNP's blog a whittling off 10 or 20 views for malicious purposes? What would be the point? Sounds like a software flaw or self-adjustment to me.

    If I hadn't been doing this, I probably wouldn't have noticed.
     
    Why are some posts taken down by 3 or 5 views while others suffer a loss of 20 hits or more?

    Very observant, Moon Platoon! This behavior is intended. The number of page views is an approximation.

    Previously, our servers would carefully tabulate the number of views every time a post was displayed. This activity was tying up our database and slowing the entire site. We decided to cache the number of views in memory and only periodically write the value to disk. This resulted in an immediate performance benefit across the entire site.

    The drops that you have observed occur when that cache expires. That can happen when a post is left idle for several days or when we perform server maintenance. The next time you see the number of views after an expiration, our software looks up the last value written to disk, which can be slightly smaller than the actual value.

    These approximations have no impact on your Google AdSense revenue.
