This morning as I rushed out the door for work I was a little surprised at how heavy my purse was.  I tend to only switch them out every 2-3 months, so they collect "stuff".  This purse is relatively "fresh" since I swapped out for it about 2-3 weeks ago.

When I got to work I needed to charge my cell phone, so I dug out the charger and got that squared away.  Yes, I carry it with me.  I'm never sure where I'll be, so rather than leave it at home and be forced to go home to charge it, I carry it with me.  I'm still trying to remember to go pick up a mobil charger.

While I was in there I did a quick inventory and this is how it came up.

Wallet
digital camera
keys
breath mints
extra batteries for camera
extra memory stick for camera
vitamins
Unisom pills
misc. receipts
coupons for craft store
bookmark from east west bookstore
tape measure
blank bookmarks for me to embroider on
can opener
short picnic knife with sheath
earrings
CD of wolves howling

This is not a really big purse, maybe 12x12x6.  The thing I was most surprised to find in there is the tape measure.  I had one of those "oh, that's where I put that" moments when I ran across it.

So, ladies, give us a run down on what you carry with you.  Guys, you can chime in to and let us know what surprises you the most about what you've found in your wife's/significant other's/sister's/etc purse.

you know, i never look through my wife's purse, and she doesn't look through my wallet. i'm wondering now if that's unusual.

Since I'm not like my soon to be father in law, I do not carry a man purse. But Natalie just switched purses over the weekend and I was pretty surprised to see all the junk she had stored in the old one. She said she was switching to a smaller purse to discourage her from shoving in useless crap that she'd forget about.

But she had a pair of socks in her purse. She said it was for trying on shoes when she was wearing sandals.  But that was really the only odd thing I saw. The rest of it was like five thousand receipts, gumball machine toys and fake tattoos, empty gum packs, twenty different pens, and a granola bar still in the package that looked like it had been stomped on.

SW - I don't think most married couple go out of their way to look into the others purse/wallet.

ET - Most of the stuff in Nat's purse doesn't surprise me.  I have carried socks in my purse if I expected to change shoes, but never as a stand by.  Her contents suggest that she's a very playful fun person.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 04, 2007....
She is a fun and playful person, so you're right about that! The only thing that was surprising to me was the sheer volume of stuff she managed to shove into a relatively small bag!

wow thats quite a list! Ive a backpack i use when i commute... though i dont carry it around everywhere...

I keep a couple of blank journals to jot my thoughts down on, pens and pencils... a roll of toilet paper (public restroom tp is teh suxxor) now that its winter i keep a coup[le hats, a scarf, and gloves. In the summer i keep a pair of shorts and a shirt in it.

hmmm the digital camera would be a nice addition...

ET - I swear that the purse making fairys put a spell on women's purses that gives them much the same properties as black holes.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 04, 2007....
hidufel - your backpack seems to make more sense than my purse.  You're right about the TP in public restrooms, if it still exists.  I just can't bring myself to carry a roll in the purse though, something about childhood trama of seeing my mom and her "suitcase" purse with embarrassing things.

I used to have what was, for me, a large purse (I am a small person so too large a purse and it looks like I'm heading on vacation!) and tons of junk in the bottom of it.  I've downsized a bit and to be honest, since I'm not working or in school anymore, most of the time I carry this little tiny purse that I made myself, for running errands, that has very little room in it.  Here's the breakdown depending on which one I've got.

    Big purse:
wallet/spare change (only if I'm not wearing pants with pockets)
    insulin pen with extra needles
    glucose monitor kit (sometimes)
    emergency sugar and/or candy
pencil or pen, if I remember
travel hairbrush (one of those fold-out things with the mirror)
    travel deodorant (you never know!)
    hair clip and/or scrunchy
    pack of gum
    pack of Kleenex
extra tampon (if I think I might be "surprised," which is rarely anymore)
    random receipts and movie tickets
    iPod
lip gloss for makeup touch-ups (regular chapstick goes in my pants also)
    travel-size tylenol bottle

    little purse:
    iPod
    pack of Kleenex
    pack of gum
    pencil
grocery list or other papers I need on my errands (like prescriptions)
random mint a client offered me months ago that I didn't want but was too polite to   refuse
insulin pen if I'm going out to eat
emergency sugar if I have the store-bought kind

I would probably carry a lot more junk if it wasn't for the diabetes stuff taking up so much room.  Actually...I might not carry a purse at all if not for needing it for the diabetes stuff.  But now I'm so used to having one to stash stuff in that I couldn't give it up :p  And my husband rents space in my purses ("Honey, do you have a place for my sunglasses?") so that would make it even harder to give up.

Oh, and I don't look in his wallet and he doesn't look in my purse either, unless one of us asks or tells the other to go get something.  It's not so much a privacy issue (I do know what's in his wallet) as it is a personal space issue (no touchy my organization system!)

tizzy - that's impressive for just a 4 day haul!

sadea - he sure has some 'splaining to do!

nytquill - It's interesting to see what gets "down graded" when space is limited.  I have also carried items for a guy in my purse, but never for very long.  It sets a bad presidence for future storage. ;)

unique- My wife's purse has been a joke with us since we've been married. She carries big purses, those full and heavy dudes. I consistently laugh, or shake my head, or roll my eyes every time she goes into it- the search begins. She's not here, or I'd ask her to let me list what's in it. The list would be two feet long.

I don't go near it- I'm afraid of it.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 04, 2007....
BTV - I've been guilty of carrying the "suitcase" purse.  Especially when the kids were younger.  I could have been stranded on an island for a week without suffering with as much stuff as I carried.
  • confuzzledwife said on Oct 04, 2007....
I am looking now- my purse is enormous.
    2 lighters
    2 half packs of matches
red wallet with about 30 credit cards- all pretty much maxed out
    my license
    change
brown wallet with insurance and SS cards
    my son's flashcards
a matchbox car (not sure where that came from)
    band-aids
    Motrin
    folding hairbrush
    travel size hair spray
    coupons that have expired
    coupons that have not expired
    address book
    4 pens
some papers I meant to put in my file cabinet

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 04, 2007....
confuzzled - Don't you love it when stuff like the matchbox turn up in the purse?  it's like, "when did that get in there?!".

uniquely- yes.. I know I didn't put it in there lol
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 04, 2007....
confuzzled - at least it's better to pull that out than say a stray tampon when digging through the purse for a pen or something at a store.

Sometime in the last couple of years, I quit carrying a purse at all.  What doesn't fit in my pockets gets left at home, unless it is in a plastic bag which I leave in my truck.  A few years ago, though, I had a few people laughing at me as I emptied my purse to show them what was in that 5 pound bag of cloth.  I even had a large spoon and a pair of binoculars.  Now I just tote it in my vehicle and use it  if I need it, then tote it back in at night.  (In my plastic bag?  Hair spray, brush, phone, antacids, a book--all sorts of nonsense.....--but I don't carry it into work or stores with me anymore!)

In my pockets?  My driver's liscense, money, small note pad--maybe lip gloss or something.  I drop my keys somewhere around work and hope they are still there when I leave.  It is so freeing to leave the bag behind when I get out and slam the door!

I tend to buy purses with built-in compartments for money and credit cards so I don't have to carry a wallet.  Here's what's in mine:

    Two sets of car keys
    Tampon
    Calculator
    Lip Balm, lipstick, lip gloss
    Compact
Receipts for preschool tuition and dance lessons
Driver's license, credit card, library cards, insurance cards, etc
    Pen and pencil
    Pocket datebook/planner
    Hairbrush
    Checkbook
    Kids' pictures
    Change
    $7.00

I'm too scared to go through my purse!  I only carry a small purse these days as whatever I carry gets filled so I figure this will spare my back at least ... the one thing I can tell you though is that I do not carry a pen - somehow I always lose pens and can't find them.  I know this because when I went to write a check this afternoon, the only writing instrument to be found in my purse was a half melted red crayon!

uniquely-ironic:  I keep that plastic bag handy (as it usually has things in it from the day before)   When I get ready to leave the house, I stuff the essentials into my pockets, and the rest goes into the bag..   It is amazing what might go into the bag--but I usually don't end up needing it at all.  But if I do....well it is in my truck.   Make a note that I have a heavy blanket in my truck also.  A flashlight.  Sometimes a pillow....  These things won't fit into a purse anyway...but I am always prepared.   (In back, oil, windshield wiper fluid, funnel, sometimes a jug of water--lots of good stuff.....)

Was just laughing as I realized I wanted to add this:

I empty my cigarrette pack enough so my lighter will fit inside the pack, and I tuck my sunglasses into my shirt top.   I have been known to tie my keys onto my shoelaces......

    What a fun post!!!

Kyle already said some of the stuff I had in my purse, but that's not all of it! I did have socks in there b/c I was looking for new shoes for work and was wearing sandals. I wanted to know how the shoes felt w/socks and never took the socks out of my bag!

But right now I look in my purse and I find:

    my wallet

    my keys

    lip balm

    gum

    tic tacs

    a credit card holder

    my phone

    my ipod

    toothpicks

    receipts

    pens

    my checkbook

a scented candle someone gave me

    coupons for food

    my makeup bag which has:

    tampons

    powder

    dental floss

    perfume

    3 diff. lip glosses

    mascara

    advil

    travel tooth brush

    hand lotion

Phew!!! That's alot of stuff!! But I like to be prepared :)

nursecutie:  At least you can eliminate the lip balm, as you have 3 different lip glosses (or vice-versa)  and the toothpicks, as you have dental floss...  don't double up!   Ha....

(just having fun with this post--I would carry my microwave in the plastic bag if I saw fit.....)  and the stove in case it blew out....)
  • hotaka said on Oct 04, 2007....

I never look in my girlfriend's purse. I have put things in it like cookies or chocolate but I never look.

Sometimes I go out with a small backpack and put whatever I need for the day in there. Months may go by before I need that backpack again. Often when I check it out I find things I had forgotten about or thought I had misplaced somewhere. Strangely enough, there's never any forgotten food in there.

  • nursecutie said on Oct 04, 2007....

wombat, I like the lip balm b/c it's medicated and good for chapped lips! The lip gloss is just pretty......so I like to have both! LOL And I am a compulsive toothpick stealer! If they offer them at restaurants in the little wrapped packages, I can't resist taking a handful. If I run out of floss, I'll have back ups! LOL @ carrying a microwave in a plastic bag! That would be funny!!

Eilan - your wallet reflects a very organized woman.

simply - I hear you on the disappearing pen.  I lose pens to boyfriends, kids, etc so I keep a big cup of them on my desk and toss a couple in the purse now and then.

wombat - LOL you crack me up.  You are the ultimate "boy scout" and yet manage to do it without the stereotypical suitcase purse.  Bravo!

nurse - toothpicks and the candle had me going, Hmmmmm.  I would guess that you are between "downloads" at the moment.

hotaka - consider yourself lucky that you never find what once was food in a forgotten purse or backpack!  Do you ever find a "spare" $20?  I love finding money that I forgot about.

quietone - now I know who to bug when I get a snagged nail away from home.   I always mean to put a file and/or clipper in the purse, but develop instant amnesia about it 3 minutes later.

minnie - 7 lip glosses!  I'm impressed.  I like the idea of hand sanitizer.  I usually keep mine in the glovebox, but need to rethink that location in favor of the purse.

ginger - you are like secret in that you keep it lean.

sweet - a cloth diaper?  I'll bet that comes in handy though I wouldn't have thought to do it myself.
