I spent most of the past weekend in book stores.  I'm not sure what triggered it, but both days were spent trolling through stacks of books.  Trying to decide which books I could live without, which might make a good Christmas gift, just how many lunches I could skip so that I could afford one more book, etc.  I ended up leaving a whole lot behind but making mental notes (and literal ones) with titles, prices and who the lucky dog is that would get the book.  (me included)

I ended up with a pretty decent stack.  Two gifts, an Anne Rice book for my son and a coffee table book of Birds of Prey for a friend.  One book to try out about the early trappers of the northwest.  If it's good I'll forward it on to my dad who loves these kinds of books.  A book on how to draw dragons and other mythical creatures.  I'm going to use this with my kids, we're working on a book together.  A book on Samurai which has tons of info and most importantly detailed descriptions and names of the pieces of body armour.  I would like to recreate a suit of armour (but not neccesarily authentic materials) in the next year.

The crown jewel in my new stack of books is a very big, thick book on Japanese art prints by the artist that did "The Great Wave".  I'm a big fan of woodblock prints and this book has pictures of dozens of them.  There are also hundreds of other pictures of other pieces.  I put the book down and walked away from it 4 times before I realized that it was coming home with me.  I don't want to admit to how many meals I will have to eat at Taco Bell to recover the cost of the book in my budget.

What is the one thing that draws you in and makes it hard for you to use self discipline when it comes to purchasing items?

you know, i tend to be very, very good about impulse buys--except for as regards food. show me a salumeria and i completely lose control; in a bakery i know at least two things are coming home; at an olive bar, at least 3 containers...

    i love food. :>

u-i: for me, it's books as well. i have to stay away from bookstores when the budget is tight or i would make it even tighter.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 01, 2007....
SW - Italian bakeries are the worst for me, though over the last year I've developed an amazing amount of self discipline with food.

Zayda - I hear ya!  I'm down to top ramen and bean burritos until payday.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 01, 2007....
unique- Books is worst for me too. Tools used to be a big thing, but I'm pretty well stocked there. I also used to be bad about impulse buying.

I'll eat burritos any day for books.

Oh, of all my art books I have nothing on any oriental art. That's something I need to look into.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 01, 2007....
BTV - I've become resigned to the fact that my stomach must pay for my brain's addiction to books.  Look into the woodblock prints when you do look into oriental art.  My favorite right now are the ones that tell the story of the 47 ronin.

I'd like to know the title of the book about the early fur trade in the Northwest Uni, I would guess I  have it.

I have no control and buy whatever I want, really, I am drawn into anything that suits my fancy.......it's awful, but I have allot of stuff haha.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 01, 2007....
mobil - I can't say exactly, and I left the book at home, but it's like "Beauty for Ashes" or "Beauty like Ashes".  Are you a big western type books reader?  I like them, and with my family tree being full of pioneers it's a good fit.
  • lfbno7 said on Oct 01, 2007....
Going way back to my childhood, I'd be awfully tempted to buy a complete set of 1958 baseball cards in any condition at all.  Fortunately for my finances, these sets aren't offered anywhere.  I have the complete set of 1957 cards, and it is worth a lot more than my car.  Then again, I don't exactly have a 2008 Porsche.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 01, 2007....
lfbno7 - LOL I hear you about the car value vs the collectibles!  I would love to be able to own first editions of many books, but I have to settle for a hand full of hard to find ones instead.
  • mobil said on Oct 01, 2007....
Uni yes I have read so much about the fur trade era, anything from the Revolutionary War forward. I can't read fiction or even historical novels, they just confuse me.

I have to say I've not heard of this book title, but I'll check it out. Most of the pioneers here are on my wife's side of the family. Though my family goes back way further to before the Revolutionary War on almost every branch.

Unique.....i have to agree with SW.....any Italian imported products bakery can make serious damage to my wallet.......thats why its a long time i dont go grocery shopping beyond my designed stores..........my last visit has been in March....sigh....

And at exactly the same level ......books.....its ages i dont buy books....but i have my faithful library card and i visit those magical places very often....last time i took with me 7 books....:-)

Ginger - I see we have the same vices.  I'm more successful with the bakery, since it is easier for me to avoid.

holiday decorations do it for me-

i have more than i'll ever need, yet every year you will find me buying more.

i was in Michaels buying craft supplies for a school project for my son.  they had all their halloween stuff out.  and yes, i just HAD to have that cauldron with the hand that grabs for you every time you go for a candy!

SL - There are a few people who have your weakness here at work.  Their desks are stylishly decorated to the current and/or up coming holidays.  I admire it, but can't seem to muster up the energy for holiday cheer these past few years.

    U-I -

Books are definitely a BIG draw for me ... I can totallIy sympathize.  I would much rather eat Taco Bell as long as I have something good to read.

Impulse buys : depends on what I hunger for.......

    L.P'S  & old books definitely

Artemis - I see you work on the same principle that a good book is worth a little sacrifice.

Mamie - oh no, I think there's a 12 step program for that my dear ;)

scipio - impulse buying is a bad habit.  unfortunately I fall into it way too often.

I'm a big bibliophile - I just really love books. And I'll read just about anything - even dictionaries and encyclopedias. I just have no where to keep them *sigh*.  So I'm a big fan of public libraries.

I've also got a stationery fetish - I love school and office supplies. Who doesn't love the smell of a boquet of freshly sharpened pencils?

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 02, 2007....
Expendable - I draw the line on book reading firmly at boring math stuff.  Maybe even law books.  You know, stuff that hurts my brain!
  • Expendable said on Oct 02, 2007....
Stay away from the law books. You won't believe all the really filthy stuff they hide in there.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 02, 2007....
Expendable - Filthy?!  (okay, now my curiosity is peaked)  How much boring do you have to read to reach the filth?
  • kruuyai said on Oct 03, 2007....
For me, it would be used books, used clothes, and new shoes.

Hmm, uniquely, with all your books on Asian Art, I'm hoping you can make a contribution to my post Who Were the Great Classical Composers and Artists in Asia?  Got any info for us?  So far, we pretty much have squat.  So any info you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 03, 2007....

The book I bought was had the work of Hokusai.  He did a lot of landscapes and some portraits.  I also like the work of Kunisada a lot.  The story of the 47 Ronin by Kuniyoshi is also very interesting.  I'm partial to japanese woodblock prints, so I'm sure there are a lot of other artists that I don't know much about.

I have no clue about asian composers.  It's not something I listen to very often.

If you do your research and know case names, not a lot. Transcripts are best for details - if the judge didn't seal everything.

There's a book, Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler you might like. It talks about the 47 Ronin and other stories that touch this inn on the Tokaido Road.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 05, 2007....
Expendable - Thank you!  I'll have to look it up this weekend.

Definitely books, second music but file sharing saves a lot of money however, (sorry to get off the subject) I do support my artists, the ones that deserve support. i.e. Dave Matthews Band, Squarepusher, Incubus etc. I have bought all their albums.
I own about 400 books and counting...... most of them chess books, secondly history.
