One of my friends is having issues with her ex-husband.  Apparently the week that her kids are with him, they are fed junk food ... snacks, sugar, McDonalds, etc.  Their son who is in first grade was recently brought in for a routine check-up.  The doctor said that he is "over weight".  This infuriated my friend as she feels her ex, who is overweight himself, is not providing proper nutrition.

We were all at a soccer game this weekend ... our daughters are on the same team.  I arrived first and set up my chair.  My friend's ex showed up next ... it was his week with the kids.  He sat down to my left.  I actually like the man as he seems intelligent, he obviously loves his kids whether he does everything "right" or not, and frankly, he has never done anything to me.  When my friend arrived, she sat on my righthand side.

At one point during the game, she decided to speak to him ... across me.  I wasn't surprised ... he has taken her back to court for additional child support so she is quite bitter, but still, I don't want to be in the middle in any way.

So, she says to him, "You need to talk to your son.  He told me that he is really upset because when he is with you, you tell him he is 'fat'".

Well, the ex neither confirmed nor denied the allegation ... whether guilty or not I'm sure he was trying to avoid a conflict on the soccer field in front of other parents ... don't blame him.

But, awhile later, when I heard a "rrrrrrrrrrrrip" and looked over to see him stand up from his lawn chair because the cloth bottom had entirely ripped out leaving him sitting on the ground, I had to chuckle to myself.  Embarrassed he folded his chair down so no one could see it had ripped, and he walked off to the other end of the field.  Needless to say, my friend thought it was hysterical.  She surprisingly ignored it and did not cause him further embarrassment, but after he was out of ear shot she had a good chuckle ... "He's telling our son that he is fat ... look in the mirror!!!!!"

well I had a somewhat similar issue with my ex husband and our daughter- some background my ex moved 1000 miles away when our kids were young and hadn't exercised his visitation in 3 years.

He was up in my area for a court date, for not paying child support- he demanded to see his kids that day before he left- I had no problem with this, ever.

They agreed to meet at McDonald's for supper.  As soon as my ex saw our daughter his exact words were 'Grandma told me you lost weight- I don't see that!'.. well my daughter cried, she was 12 and the last time he saw her she was 9.. this just crushed her to pieces.

My daughter is now 16 and thin, I mean, rail thin.. and it worries me a lot- when she told me what he said I immediately emailed him and asked him what he was thinking??  Now understand, he and his new wife are extremely overweight.. and certainly have no room to talk- well, he thought what he said was ok, obviously I did not.. and I believe she has a complex now over that one comment-

I don't know what advice I can give.. the mother can only do so much and make sure he's getting proper nutrition at her house- sadly, she can't "make" dad give him only healthy foods- he should want to, but some people are selfish!

Oh, that's so sad about your daughter.  I think it's horrible anyway, but with girls it's even worse ... with all the images of skinny (too skinny) celebrities on t.v. ... I'm sure it gave your poor daughter quite a complex ... what an unsupportive asshole thing for a dad to say!  And after not seeing her for 3 years???  He should have taken her into his arms and told her how beautiful she was and how much he missed her or something!  Anyway, just watch that your daughter doesn't head down the path of anorexia or bulimia ... it's scary.

In my friend's case I have to admit I found it hilarious that we got to witness the fat dad's chair ripping out ... I guess pointing out the "role model" issue when you have gone through a bitter divorce, wouldn't work?!!!  Would be appropriate though!!!
