I wish I could make my mind up whether I believe in spirit guides or not!  The romantic, trusting  side of me does, but there's always the skeptical  part of me  saying "load of rubbish, you're just being conned"
When I was about twenty I saw a psychic, I'd recently had a dream about a woman who was dressed like a nun, it was one of those very vivid dreams that felt like it meant something.  She was walking down a corridor, looking back at me, and I got the feeling she wanted me to follow her, I woke up, and felt very spooked for the rest of the night, I had to sleep with the light on. The psychic said she was my spirit guide, but surely you shouldn't feel scared of your guide! I've never dreamt about her since.
I have dreamt about animals guides though, whether that's because I have more trust in animals than I do in people I don't know. They don't really "speak" to me, they are just there, and I feel comforted rather than scared.
I did become attuned to Reiki a few years ago, at first I went with it, and I had some very spiritual moments when self healing, and some positive outcomes when I used it on animals. I never did any hands on with people, but I did do some distance healing, and also had some significant moments while doing that. Things changed when the person who attuned me became almost hostile, and cut ties to all her "students". I kind of lost faith at that point, and stopped practicing. It doesn't take much for me to loose faith in people unfortunately :-) Because I lost faith in her, I also lost faith in Reiki itself, which is stupid I know, but that's how it was. I still do some healing on myself, but it isn't often enough and the skeptic in me gets in the way.
I have never been religious as such, but I do have a spiritual side, it's just I can't decide what I  do believe. Anyone else have this problem?

I think a lot of people struggle with this. When you find something that just fits, you'll know it. Many people never develop a firm set of beliefs. They just take bits and pieces from several spiritual pathways and never identify with just one. And I think that's okay. But if you really want to find something you can believe in, you should spend some time reading up on your different options. Eventually something will probably click with you.

    Good luck :-)

e_t - I think that's what I do, I'm not a fan of organised religion for a multitude of reasons, but I do believe there is something out there. I've read LOADS, but i'm sure there's lots more out there - Thanks :-)

batty- I've looked for "the answer" to spirituality all my life and have never found it. I've read tons also- doesn't really help. Reading tells you what helps someone else or tells what they think you should do.

I have a book on the Himalayan masters and there is a story of an older woman who said she felt empty, had nothing to believe in. The master asked her what she loved. She said the only thing she loved was her nephew. He said, then concentrate your love on your nephew.

What this tells me is to find what you find solace in, what do you love, who or what do you want to be with? If its your animal guide, that's one of the things you'll find solace in.

To me, the answer is what gives me relief, what makes me feel special, or where I can go to escape anxiety. I love silence, my dog helped greatly before she died. My wife is instrumental.

I'll never find the true answer to complete spirituality, so I find the things I love.

    What do you love?

You should find a spiritualist church and check it out.  Some of the people there are truly amazing.  I've also witnessed a ghost with a couple of dozen other people.  I'm not psychic, but I've experienced a few weird things that have convinced me there is something existing out there in the spiritual world.

beyond: good advice, I'll see where it takes me :-) - thanks

buckrogers: I've never been to a spiritualist church, I've read a few books on the subject, maybe i'll go someday - thanks

i don't know much about reiki, although a good friend of mine is big into it.

i have a question: in what do you believe? just in general terms: is there more than the simple physics and math of this world and if so, what traits or properties does it possess?

ed - To be honest I really don't know, thats my problem! Its changed over time which I suppose it does for everyone.

I believe there is a higher force or energy, not particularly a God/goddess as such, but something that physics as we know it doesn't comprehend yet.  Two hundred years ago the technology we have today would have seemed like magic, so I imagine if we are still here in two hundred years from now it'll be the same.

I have had experiences in my life that I can't explain that stops me from being an athiest.

I haven't much time at the moment as I'm at work, but hopefully I'll have time to add to this later.

The person who did the reiki was just a person, so don't worry. I thinks it could be something in it. How did Jesus heal? Well I am like you I believe and don't so I say let´s suppose it could be like that. but don't  be too sure. Just let it be I say to my self, sill I dream strange dreams and somehow I feel spiritual. But I think the best thing is just to live my life, do my best and suppose these things could be. Karma, reincarnation. I don't know. They are not  unlikely but anyway I don't really know and I let them just be and still I hope they are. I don't know if you know what I am trying to say.

I think there's reasonable evidence that spiritual beings exist outside our sight but connect with our soul. The question is, are those spiritual forces actually good, or do they distract us from what's really important?

I think it's awesome that you're searching spiritually, battycat.  I believe that Jesus healed with the power of God, and to seek that power means to live you life according to the Creator - God Himself. And it's a life that's so much more than the whole of Christianity demonstrates it to be. People following something faithfully will fall short at different times. What's important about spirituality is that depending upon the strength of what you believe in, you will either pass through life with joy, or become embittered.

One thing that surprises me is that many who don't believe in a God or higher being(s) will cite lack of visible proof that one exists. However, if that being or beings have power that we seek, that puts them above us in some ways, or maybe all ways. Wouldn't we consider that a powerful being that we seek for something would have power or knowledge that we don't? And wouldn't that also include transcending just the physical world that we know and see?

If so, how do we learn about and know a higher being? For me, that's the Bible. Whenever it confuses me or appears to contradict itself, I find that it leads me to an answer I've never heard of.  If it be the Word of God, it truly fits that description, because instead of an answer I would expect, it challenges me to think of our existence as more than just fumbling around, guessing at our purpose, or thinking of people in terms of black and white issues - there is too much gray area to judge or dismiss others by labeling them crudely.

So I really applaud what you've shared in here, batty.  The Bible explains that followers of God are not up against the powers of the world, but up against the powers and principalities and authorities of the heavenly/spiritual realms. God and Satan vying for the hearts and minds of a quite remarkable race that is mankind. To that end, I would caution that not all spiritual powers or forces are good - because they can take us away from God's purposes. But asking God for power - the same power through which Jesus walked on water, turned water to wine, and all that - but more importantly, healed so many people in His time that they couldn't record each one in the Gospels...unless you wanted to read a book thousands of pages long, perhaps :)  I would say that we can't base what we believe on the actions of others who believe the same thing - if they live the RIGHT thing out in the WRONG way, and we let their actions drive us away from the truth, then we're responsible for the belief that we refused... To that end, maybe more of us should give organized religion a try - or another try, or a 20th try :)

I'm not 100% sure of any form of spirituality myself, but one thing I have learned is that the minute I begin to believe in a person I will be disappointed.  No matter how good or pious a person is, they are imperfect.

My current spiritual beliefs encompass christianity, taoism, buddhist, shinto, wiccan, jewish and of course the belief that I am capable of choosing the answers that are right for me.  What a mess!!
  • lidstrom82 said on Sep 28, 2007....
Not a mess, friend...just a work in progress!

Skald - Thanks, yes i think i know what you are saying :-)

lidstrom82 - Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm not a reader of the Bible, but I'm sure there is wisdom in its pages, along with other religous texts. I feel that any faith whose ultimate goal is good is ok with me, but I struggle to understand "blind" fundamentalism, (which I'm not labelling you with). That is mainly why I distrust organised religion. Thankyou again :-)

U-I - Your current beliefs sound a lot like mine,  lol :-)

    Mamie - hi, thanks :-)

battycat - thanks for the perspective and for the sharing. I am wondering, what would you define as "blind" fundamentalism? I find "fundamentalism" spoken with loose lips here and there, and I haven't found a good definition of it yet. What's your perspective on it, guys?
  • Battycat said on Sep 29, 2007....

There are fundamentalists in all religions, what I mean by it is the hatred aimed at others outside that belief, the view that they ( the fundamentalists)  are right and no one elses view has any value.

This is my definition, I'm probably wrong, but that is my perspective :-)

It doesn't matter to me what people believe, as long as no harm is done to anyone else along the way.

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 29, 2007....
lidstrom: heh...well, you know how i define fundamentalism. :D

battycat: i think that perhaps you should definitely consider the matter more.

lidstrom - hope i haven't caused any offence, it was early in the morning after a night shift, so my brain not fully in gear.

ed: point taken, I know what I mean, I just may not have expressed myself very well, I'm very willing to accept I'm no expert, lets just say I've had recent experience of people claiming to be christian and fundamental in their beliefs, and it wasn't very pleasant. :-)
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 29, 2007....
many non-fundamentalists have had similar experiences, i wager. :>

  • lidstrom82 said on Oct 01, 2007....
Thanks for the insight, guys...nothing was offensive, batty, it was all good. I guess what I'm wondering is, what do fundamentalists so that is offensive? Are they called such because they know what they believe in? If so, I would hope that everyone would stand up for their beliefs just as strongly.

But, holding firm in a belief does not mean forcing it down others' throats. It must be fair to say that many Christians, for example, believe their view to be right because God, Jesus, King David, the apostle Paul, the prophets, and the disciples all said so in the Bible - God is our Creator, and belief in Jesus is the only way we get to be with God. In a nutshell, the Bible says as much. So all that goes to say, anyone who is a Christian must stick to what their God actually says, but threatening others who believe differently not only hurts their position, but it goes against what God said - to love one another as we love ourselves, as God loves us, as Jesus loved and died for us.

So, I wonder why it seems that fundamentalist has automatic negative connotations in many ways. Is it staunch belief in their faith, or is it their overbearing way of sharing it?
  • silverwhisper said on Oct 01, 2007....
IMX, some folks are prone to allowing their zeal to override their diplomacy, lidstrom and as a rule, that tends to mean evangelicals, who are more often fundamentalist than not.

I don't know who these people and animals are in your dreams. I feel that we dream for specific reasons that we have not figured out yet. But, I positively feel that dreaming is purposeful and good. Many times, I 've been told that the person in our dreams is really our "self." What what the nun or the animals doing? This may reveal alot about you.
On religion:  I have explored several options in my 37 years of life. I have been in belief of one then in disbelief (which then leads to dispair usually) and then confusion. I have found solace in the present. Sometimes when we stop searching for answers that are not even there we can find the answer sitting in our lap. Sometimes, the "right now" is the best you've got, so savor it (and eat something chocolate).
    My best, ~"Stinker"
