Ok gang! I m finally going to give up the struggle and stop pretending my hearing is 100%. Really it never has been. As a very small child I had an exceptionally high fever that managed to cook my hearing abilities. My right ear has managed to get to a state that I would consider profoundly deaf. My left ear hears with a fairly large percentage of loss.
What I d like to know is any information that anyone can pass on to me. Bear in mind I m vain and dont want anything dangling on my ear that resembles a tractor part. I wear glasses so I likely have to consider something that hooks up with them. Anybody used the ones that fit into the ear canal without all the over the ear stuff? Anyone found particular sucess with a certain brand or a particular model? Anybody know what to look for and what the pitfalls are when purchasing them?

POOR BOT! (SEE, I'M TYPING REAL LOUD SO YOU CAN HEAR)

The type of hearing aid will depend on the type of deafness you have.  I don't know the specifics, but having worked for an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor we often referred people to have them fitted for a hearing aid.  I've seen very small ones, so when you're going through the process keep telling them you would like the least visible and obtrusive model that will work for you.

    Happy hearing!

Botoni I've never seen a damn hearing aid that fits inside the ear do the wearer and good. They are always out of adjustment and when in adjustment they just don't do the job.

I couple years ago, I bought my mother in law a good hearing device that you wear on your belt out of Cabalas catalog. Some hunters use them to increase their ability to hear sound. Damn there is a name for them and I can't think of it now.

Anyway, she wears it all the time, I got a good one, don't get the cheap ones, but if you are so vain you probably wouldn't wear one of them anyhow haha. You just turn the volume up on them and they inhance the sounds to you. Good luck with this.

My father has been wearing hearing aids for several years and they have gotten progressively smaller in size. I hardly notice that they are in his ear now. But I couldn't tell you what kind they are to save my own skin.

LOL at unique...  such a silly girl...

We've tried for years to get my dad to use a hearing aid, but he's a stubborn old coot.  I'm glad you're not, Botty...

UNIQUE..............Thanks for using your loud voice for my benefit! LOL! I ll keep repeating....small, inobtrusive, small, smaller, etc.
MOBIL......I m actually lying about the vain part. If it helps I m about ready to get one of those horn things they used in Victorian times.
SWEETS......As much as I like the idea of nothing at all visible I dislike letting them hack away at me with a knife. So your suggestion is out. Thanks for mentioning it though.
ZAYDA.....Thanks a lot! LOL! Very helpful!.....Actually the 'getting smaller year by year' is encouraging.
    MISSMIMI............I AM SO!

    Are not!  :D

Oh, alright!  If you insist...  I officially dub thee  Official Stubborn Old Coot of SoulCast.  Bet Mobil fights ya for it.  But let's keep that to ourselves...  Oh. Uh, you mean he can see this?  Uh oh...

oh botoni i hope you could hear me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway i had a friend once who was using a hearing age. he's young but he has some hearing troubles.

he has a hearing aid. that it's kinda invisible because the color is the same as his skin color. so maybe find a hearing aide the same as your skin tone!

i hope you could hear me now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

I hope you find one that suits, I've seen some advertised that are almost unseen, but I've no idea if they are any good. Good luck with the search - let me know if you find a good one, my left ear is pretty poor now :-)

Botty--I'm pretty sure that my father's hearing aids are Mircale-Ear hearing aids. You can check out the various kinds/styles they have here.  I do know that they are so small that the battery seems minuscule, and he has this tiny suction cup tool to help hold the battery while putting it in the hearing aid itself.  And the hearing aids have these little clear plastic "threads" (for lack of a better term) that stick slightly outside his ear (they can't be seen unless you are seriously invading his personal space) that are meant to help pull the hearing aid out when it's necessary to take them out.

Oh, my edit timer ran out.

If his hearing aids aren't Miracle-Ear, in terms of the brand, they are pretty darn close in design to the smallest style of Miracle-Ear hearing aid displayed on their site. In fact, my dad's look a bit smaller, so it could be they are a different brand. But I know that Miracle-Ear is a pretty widely used brand of hearing aid here in the States, so that's why I am leaning toward his being a Miracle-Ear.

botoni ~ I don't know much about them, but I do see a lot of info on the web.  They do make very small ones these days I do know that.  good luck

hey Bot,  don't know the first thing about these, but can tell you that my dad has had the same experience as mentioned above, over the years they have gotten smaller and smaller. His latest check up will get him a new gadget to play with, he is hoping it is smaller yet again, but then he says that the batteries are already so small he can't see them...how funny is that? good luck!! mamie

botoni:  I have two promising prospects for you.  The first would be to grow your hair long, so it doesn't matter how big the hearing aid is..  In the event that that doesn't work, you'll just have to spend more time on soulcast, where you won't need to hear anything, and everybody loves you.  :)
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 28, 2007....
i'm sorry to hear about the state of your hearing, botoni. :<

oddly enough, my father used to be an ENT guy. will ask him.

Hearing aids shmearings aids!  You just need an original large old horn to hold to the ear like in the old days :-)  WHAT'D YA SAY?????

No seriously, Botbabes, I think you will be much happier when you can hear properly. . .a whole world of sounds to be rediscovered :-)))
  • botoni said on Sep 28, 2007....
    MissMimi....Thanks for the dub!
Mobil.....I went to Cabalas catalogue. Now you went and created a whole new place for me to shop. Lots of fascinating stuff. I didnt find the system that parks on ones belt but I found lots of stuff to help me hear moose and deer. That is if I decide to take a hankering for deer.
    Queen.....loud and queer....oops ...clear.
Batty....Once I ve settled on something I ll let you know.
Zayda....I ve reached that stage in life when hair grows out my ears anyway. I ll have to be sure not to have the aids in when I trim.....LOL.
Quiet....I ve been surfing through them on the web. Wow! There are a lot of options.
Mamie.....I m picturing myself talking with other old folks and bragging 'Mine is smaller than yours.'
Silver....I ll be interested in what your father has to say.
Frozen Ticker.....I m thinking one of those horn things would be a great conversation piece. I m sure I could get lots of added attention carting one of those around. Sort of a conversation piece. If I can just hear what we re conversing.
  • quietone said on Sep 29, 2007....
botoni ~ while surfing did you see the one that looked like a small ufo with a little antena sticking out of the top?  it was a blue space ship looking thing....can you imagine!!  here  but then again, who knows, it may just be the "cats pajamas"!  I liked polars idea with the big horn..and capt. underwear using it!!
  • botoni said on Sep 29, 2007....
Quietone! OMG....they do look like space ships. If I want louder would I be able to say 'Beam me up Scotty'?
  • kruuyai said on Sep 29, 2007....
botoni:  Hey!  Stop ignoring me!  Didn't you hear what I said?  ^
  • botoni said on Sep 29, 2007....
OMG....KRUU! I apologize for ignoring you. I meant to respond but my mind is gone along with my hearing apparently. All righty, I ll grow my hair long....I presume you mean the ones growing out of my ears.
  • skald said on Oct 01, 2007....
These new hearing aids are supposed to be very good. No need to tune them or anything I've heard. And they don't show. Sorry I can't give you any information. I also don't know how the system is over there if the insurances pay a part of it as they would do here.

My dad did not hear well and when he was in the 40´s he would not admit it . It was kind of funny because some people would think he was stuck up because he did not hear and therefor did not answer. He later had hearing aids and they were big and in his last years he would be tuning them and sometimes you would hear an awful peeping sound.  Once his hearing aid got out of his ear and on to the conveyor belt where he was getting his suit cases at the airport. He had humor and we would laugh about this. The good thing is when he did not want to listen any more he could turn off his hearing aid.

SKALD......I ll keep that trick in mind!
