if you go to google's homepage today, you'll see they did a custom google icon as they periodically will do from time to time.

there's one today in honor of google's 9th birthday

rarely has a company come along and so quickly utterly dominated in their field so quickly. indeed a number of soulcasters first came here due to the "get paid to blog" tagline in the e-mails about soulcast--i'm one, i admit it--and without that and the google adsense program w/ which it was to be fueled, i'd have missed out on something truly beautiful and several friendships without which my life would be less.

happy birthday, google!

and now, the poll: of the various services that google offers, to you what is the single most useful? is it still searching, or has something else supplanted it for you? or are you one of those who dislikes google for their omnipresence?

I love their custom Google logos for holidays and stuff! It's just fun to see those.

I still use it for searching all the time, but I'd have to put Gmail at the top of my list - it has a built-in chat feature and scads of storage; what's not to like?

Gmail uber alles.......i can write and read emails and i can chat with 3 people all at the same time. Plus i can have more than one account and i can use my photo tool for sending my pics. Lots of storage too and an archive for info about my people.

I might found it a littel cludgy here and there but i can live with it...

Google is the only search engine I use. I love it! And I also use Gmail and spend quite a long time using the Google chat feature. Not the best chat program I've ever seen, but it gets the job done. I'm a fan!

Didja know you can create pdf files with google! That's really cool. I like that. But, other than searching and gmail, I most often use the language tools, translating mostly from Spanish.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 27, 2007....
infernal: good point re: gmail. i think i use that far more than anything else, although google maps, google earth and google directions are also services i use.

GS: yeah, it's hard to beat that storage, isn't it? you find it kludgy? are you using it as webmail or do you have it going directly into an e-mail application like outlook?

e_t: you know, i should some day install a chat app!

windrider: whoa--no, i didn't know that! and i wasn't aware that google offered translation tools. i've been using babelfish for my translations needs and am not exactly thrilled with it--where do i find that?!

  • WindRider said on Sep 27, 2007....
It used to be a link right on the search page, but they kinda hid it and I'm not sure why.  It used to be a Language Tools link right next to the main search box, but its no longer there and its not even under the "more" links. I don't know why they have hidden it!

If you go to the "Google Classic Home" link, you'll see it.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Sep 27, 2007....
ed: Google directions > MapQuest? And yes, you should install a chat app. ;-)

    windrider: ah, thank you!

infernal: i dunno, my experiences w/ google directions hasn't been very extensive just yet, will have to use it more to say. me, i like e-mail. :p

Ed..... i have it as e-mail application......and it happens to be kludgy only when i am writing an e-mail....in chat mode is fine and becomes slow only due to a change in internet connection speed...

I love Google Earth too and Mapquest is my Bible...lol.....

  • bloc said on Sep 27, 2007....
this is a toss up. gmail is the best mail app I've ever used and i do a lot of emailing (mail.app on the mac is second best). However, google maps by far the best mapping and directions program. I could live without gmail since mail.app is almost as good, but I'd cry if I had to use map quest these days. But, gmail is a bigger part of my daily life so ...

I use google for searching, I have a googlemail account but I dont use it, oh and I use it as a spell checker too!!  if I dont know how to spell something I just search and it says ...did you mean!!!  :-) see now that at one time really botherd me!! I found it very rude and patronising!! now I don't mind cus I can say yeah, I did mean that thankyouuuuuuuuu   lol :-) xx
  • destinydiva said on Sep 27, 2007....
oh yeah and google earth!!!  love that!!  and google maps!!  hmmm dont think I ever really appreciated google till I realize how much I do actually use it!!
  • Trinov said on Sep 27, 2007....
Hi, most of the features I've never used. Using it as spellcheck --I'll try that-- I have no English spellcheck for some strange reason, only Hebrew. I use Google as a search engine basically, but sometimes yahoo is better. Hard to know until I try. What I like is Google earth, it is fascinating. Maybe someday when there is peace in the world it could be with realtime videos and not just photographs, but it gives an picture of this world's surface that nothing else can match, at least nothing else that exists for us regular people..

Google who? Haha.. Happy 9th birthday google.

I use it for searching. The results are often specific and generally, I am satisfied.

google search, gmail with chat, google earth... oh, and google ads too :-)

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 28, 2007....
GS: ah, that explains it. heh...if mapquest is your bible, that could make for some very interesting commandments! :D

bloc: i'd be curious to know what criteria are important to you re: mail apps.

    skald: heh...i was surprised, too!

destiny: you know, you're the second person i know who's mentioned using it that way! and google earth is pretty darned cool, i agree.

trinov: that's surprising that you don't have a spell check feature in english. do you use windows?

queen: really? i never google for images so i've never had that experience.

ms star: i have to say, i think gmail is the best free service there is.

    lioness: [trout-smack!] :D

    moon: heh...another adsense user, i see. :>

    @sw
good ways to organize and find mail. That's it, nothing complicated, but the simple goals are the hard ones to achieve :)
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 28, 2007....
i would imagine that the way in which people organize their mail doesn't really lend itself to ready categorization, which would in turn give rise to a daunting range of possible methods to support.

for example: i use outlook (yes, i'm a redmond slave). i've been ever since i had e-mail, and hence i think in terms of (nested) folders. for me, i have to nest folders b/c otherwise, i would have to maximize the app in order to use it, but of course that in turns means i've eliminated the rest of my screen when i shouldn't have to.

but a new method of organizing mail (google's search?) would enable me to avoid having to use folders. if i could "tag" e-mails and/or whole threads, that would be a lot more convenient--if deployed in conjunction w/ a reasonably efficient search function. why MS outlook's search engine runs like a damned box sort, i'll never know...

yup, with gmail i use labels and search to organize and find email. It's similar in mail.app on the mac. I prefer gmail because I use a lot of different computers and I don't have to sync gmail since it's on the web :)
  • bloc said on Sep 28, 2007....
Oh, have you used itunes before? Itunes has "smart" playlists where you can specify certain rules that will automatically fill your play list and update it. mail.app has a similar thing for emails which I use heavily.

For example, i have this regular email I send out once a quarter and I make sure a certain phrase is in the subject. All correspondence that contains that phrase in the subject shows up in my smart mailbox even sent emails.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 28, 2007....
you know, b/c i use gmail over POP3, i don't get to use labels. ?

i'm afraid i don't use itunes, but that does sound like a really smart feature.

I just love google, pictures, maps, gmail, they all come in useful depending on what I'm using google for, somedays I just use it to check spellings, other days I'm finding pictures of places to annotate for my coursework.
    I love Google!!
plus I've just realised that if I type my name into it, not only did I find a birth certificate thing, which was pretty awesome, but some of my achivements have been publicised on there too!
but sometimes, you do have to go on www.ask.com coz google doesnt quite find the right thing!!

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 30, 2007....
interesting, i've never used ask.com. i'll have to check it out. :>

I believe that ask.com used to be called Ask Geeves or something like that. I remember using it a lot at the time.
