My neighbor dragged a computer chair out to the curb last night.  I assumed that it was one of those "free" things that people do around here, but I am not sure.  I waited until full dark and then went and "test drove" it.  I didn't see anything wrong with it, except that it had sort of an "air compressed" system with it.  I sat down and was up high one second, then, down low the next.  But, when I was "low" it seemed about right.

Let me tell you that the chair I have had to put up with for over a year has given me a tremendous backache.  I keep meaning to go buy a new one, but never seem to get around to it.  And now there is this beauty, just sitting by the curb saying--try me!  The only thing missing is the "free" sign that should be taped to the seat.

It is dark now, and I am tempted to go snag the chair, just to bring it in and try it out.  If it works, maybe I will take my old one out there and put it in it's place!

But what if the chair is just there for some strange reason that I don't know about?  The people are usually home by now, but are not.  Maybe because it is Friday night and they have gone somewhere.  I don't want to wait and find out the chair was free and I was too scared to go "drag it up my driveway."

Only here in the northeast do people just put stuff outside for you to take.  I saw a brush pile the other day with some good wood for fireplaces by the curb the other day.  They put up a big sign next to it.  It said, "Not Free."   Now, tell me I am not being cautious about being arrested for stealing!

Maybe I will go get it, try it out, then put it back if it hurts my back like this one.  But I will have to wait until tomorrow night after dark!

ROFLMAO.... take the chair.... dare dare dare.... look the worst thing that could happen is the neighbour comes over and asks you where it is??? then you can sit in your computer chair and tell them, well I thought it was free?

dare dare take the chair... hehe

(I'm waiting until the lights go out at their house now!) I think someone is home....

Well, wombie's are known scroungers...and yes, that is exactly what I was doing!
  • wakingharmony said on Sep 21, 2007....
Take it in. Just go get it and protect it. I mean what if someone stole it. You can tell them, you have been keeping an eye on it for them but you got tired of standing in the window, so you brought it in. Then tomorrow go over and tell them that you took the chair in from the weather and to guard it. then they will say Thank-You or oh we put it out hoping someone would take. You know if you put a free sign on it no one will want it.

wakingharmony:  Just go get it, and damn the consequences?  That's what hubby said.  He said if I don't like it, we'll go this weekend and get a new chair.  I am torn between getting a free one and a new one....I do so love just free stuff sitting there for the taking!
  • wakingharmony said on Sep 21, 2007....
Well if you dont like it just take it back you were only protectin it anyway..lol
  • ninjapirate said on Sep 21, 2007....
I say take it, there's not a "not free" sign by it hehe.
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
ninjapirate:  I made it as far as the chair, barefoot in the cold grass, touched it, then turned back. Saw a kitchen light on!  I will just have to see how long the chair stays there, and how long my greed lasts...Ha....

Will I get the chair?  Stay tuned to tomorrow's epsisode.....ha...

  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
Just got that---there's not a "not free" sign by it...Fair game!
  • mobil said on Sep 21, 2007....
Take it and put it half way to your driveway, chain it to a tree to protect your find. This way you can explain if anyone asks that you wanted it but weren't sure. So you protected it for the owners and for yourself and, against any interlopers.
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
mobil:  Good suggestion!  That's how I snagged my husband!
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
wakingharmony:  Have a good night.  Sleep well, and I will continue the saga of the chair.  I am guessing I will be shopping for a new one, not stealing a free one.....but then again, maybe the lights are out next door now.....
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
You did me in:  I stole the chair!  Am I happy? Not sure yet....I am down low.  Please don't tell me I have to take it back before I go to bed!  It is kind of low...like me...And it was heavy getitng up the steps!   If I can't fix the air compressor thing, I am in trouble here!  Somebody help me!

But now I have two chairs!
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
And I am eye level with my computer...Oh my, I forsee another barefoot grass trip to put it back...
  • wombat said on Sep 21, 2007....
I just put it back!  Didn't work for me!  And I am not sure if I put it in the same place where it was!  I dragged it down the steps and across the lawn, and to where I thought I found it.  But I think it is a few feet to the left....Wow, that was fun!  If no one saw me, then they will just think some kids moved it.  They would freak if they knew I took it into my house to sit in for a test run!
  • ninjapirate said on Sep 21, 2007....
lol Glad I don't have to wait till tomorrow to find out now.  To bad it didn't work for you, but was a fun adventure to read about.
  • Actorguy said on Sep 21, 2007....
Guess where I got the chair I'm sitting in right now?  From someone's driveway!  It is common practice here to leave things you don't want by the side of the road so someone will claim them.  Then you don't have to take them to the dump!
  • hotaka said on Sep 22, 2007....
maybe someone said this already (I am just skimming through) but take the chiar and leave a note explaining the situation to your neighbours. Hopefully they didn't leave it for someone else to pick up.
  • quietone said on Sep 22, 2007....
How in the world did I miss this post!! LOL you are too funny.  I am glad you took the chair as if you didn't someone else would have...and chances are it would have ended up in their yard sale for $10 so why not you!   You are right though, lots of stuff beside the road for free around here, especially around a college town, when UVM lets out..you could supply your whole house with the stuff the kids leave behind that mama or pop got them, so it doesn't bother them to leave it!!
  • botoni said on Sep 22, 2007....
Glad you at least got a test run on the chair WOMBIE! Around here when we have articles to clear out we kick them to the curb (for some reason it works best in the alley). I did it with my last partner. I was smart though. I pinned a sign saying "Free....no returns".
  • wombat said on Sep 22, 2007....
Sorry--no time to comment individually.  Had to go get ready for work and now must scoot here in a bit.  The first thing I did when I got up was look in here and see if hubby had come home from work late last night and brought the chair back in!  Thank goodness, no!  (It's still out there, mocking me....ha)

Wish I could stay and play....thanks all for commenting!
  • wakingharmony said on Sep 22, 2007....
{{{{wombat }}}}} You didn't mention stairs before!! That would have been a whole different situation....poor wombat hope you have good day at work.

Roflmaooooo...omg...you had me laughing with tears in my eyes! I had the same vision Lucy did. Picturing the whole thing from beginning to end as you explained had me rolling. Great post! Fantastic lady! You crack me up Wombie. Hugggs

Can we have our chair back, please? We were trying to get something out of that tree.

  • wombat said on Sep 23, 2007....
Gonna go have some tea, then back to answer....lol!
  • wombat said on Sep 23, 2007....
ninjapirate:  Well, I paid for staying up so late, trying to take a chair!  Had to work the next day and just now got rested up.  I think today I will go buy a computer chair--one that works!

Actorguy:  Well, I hope your chair sits better than that one did!  They just don't do this back in the south where I am from.  We like to get out and go for a drive and look.  We got a desk and some other things on our last run!

quietone:  It was a long night, wondering and dealing with a stupid chair!  I bet the neighbor would have a good laugh if she knew what I had done--sneaking the chair in and out of my house late at night!  It went "whoosh!" when I sat in it, and I was sitting too low to the floor.  Felt like I was a two year old trying to type on a keyboard sitting on a high shelf!  So I took it back outside to her curb!

botoni:  I was wondering why there was no "Free" sign on the chair.  Just the temptation to maybe "steal" it!  I like the sign you had--"FREE...no returns!"  but then, I would have been stuck with the bad chair!  Ha!  If it had been a good one that I wanted, hubby suggested that I put MY chair out there in it's place!

wakingharmony:   Yes, the stairs up the deck were the killer!  I didn't realize the chair was so heavy!  I had a busy, but rough day at work.  Came home too tired to be on SC--I slept, but went to bed thinking about how I wanted to be on here and read and answer!

Suddenrain:  Thanks for popping in to tell me I gave you a chuckle!  I am usually good for that, even when I don't mean to!

mOOn platOOn:  Oh!  I have put it back now..So sorry!  I didn't know it was not free for the taking....I just borrowed it to see if I wanted one like it!         That was funny, mOOn platOOn--sorry I wasn't here to answer right away!
  • quietone said on Sep 23, 2007....
I didn't see the "test run" comment you made..I can also see you sneaking out and nabbing that chair..hope it was on wheels...and scooting back...then again LOl  in the middle of the nite
  • wombat said on Sep 23, 2007....
quietone:  It was on wheels...(ha! who's post was that about "On Wheels?")   But, wheels don't roll up the steps!
  • queenparanoia said on Sep 23, 2007....
hahahah take the chair!!! =) funny post wombie... =)
  • wombat said on Sep 23, 2007....
Queen:  I decided the chair was no good--my bad one was better than that.  And we got out today, but still I didn't get a new one.  Guess I will have to wait for someone else to throw one out!
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 24, 2007....
wombat, you clearly don't live in a college town--students woulda nabbed it in hours!
