So One of my coworkers is Muslim. She is observing a holy month in which they are required to fast from dawn to dusk. She explained it to me and it made a lot of sense but that is another tale.

She was explaining this to a roomful of our coworkers in the break room and a discussion began comparing Catholicism to Muslim belief. Then someone said it was inappropriate to talk about religion at work and the fight was on.

Not about the two religions. About the rightness of TALKING about the two religions.

Do you believe that (beyond sex of course) there are topics that should only be discussed in very specific situations? What I mean to say is.... Should only fluffy topics be broached in professional arenas?

Well, there is a lot to be said for avoiding discussions about sex, politics, or religion in the workplace because these topics easily get other people worked up and anytime that happens there's a high risk of someone getting "offended".

I know, blah, blah, blah ... I actually think it's crap and people are just way to sensitive and looking for a fight sometimes!  Just my opinion though ...

Religion, i have alwas felt, was a very big topic that should be avoided... youjust never know who may be listening... it may be ok between you and the person youre talking too, but you never know if that shy person on the other side of the cubicle wall might take offense at something said.

same for some of the other subjects... too many people these days take offense at the simplest of things... or are ready to go to HR for any percieved slight, to make it worthwhile, IMHO.

I don't believe that any topic should be off-limits as long as the participants to the conversation are civil with one another and actually listen. it's when a conversation becomes a forum for one-sided opinionating that it becomes a problem for me.

I've talked sex and religion and politics with office mates in the past - but only with those who I knew could carry on a civil conversation.

I'm with LJ.  Discussion is perfectly fine; trying to convert one's co-workers isn't.

Its one that needs to be aproached with tact, Because folks that believe, BELIEVE, and messing around with folks faith, even in discussion, brings hard feelings to the surface very fast.

If you dont have a bunch of adults that can talk about it at work....then no, it shouldnt. You know what I mean....

given what you've said about your workplace, i'd say that you want to avoid that particular discussion any time it crops up in your workplace, LG. honestly, your descriptions of your workplace suggests that they're 98% mouthbreathers.

i've had such conversations, but i'm always extremely careful about such things.
