I just finished reading this mediocre murder-mystery. At the beginning of the book, the protagonist was given an ipod from his girlfriend along with a gift certificate for 100 free downloads.  He decided, being the methodical person that he was, that he would first compile a list of the 100 greatest rock songs of all time and he sought the help of his friends and his partner in making the list.  This made for a very entertaining sub-plot that ran through the entire book, as he added and discarded songs from the list.  They'd be in the middle of a shoot-out with some random bad guy, and his partner would say " Otis Redding - Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay....He's gotta be on the list man!"  and he would answer  "Damn....How could I forget Otis?"

Anyway, this got me thinking about my own "top 100" list and what songs would absolutely, positively, have to be on the list.  Here's 5 of them in no particular order.

1. The Rolling Stones........................Honky Tonk Woman
2. The Animals.................................House of the Rising Sun
3. Creedence Clearwater Revival......Down on the Corner
4. Eurythmics....................................Sweet Dreams (are made of this)
5. Blue Rodeo...................................Already Gone

I threw the last one in for Canadian Content.....and to prove that I do like some songs that are less than 20 years old! LOL

So give me some songs that would have to be on your list.  Maybe we can learn something about each other, and maybe we can make our own Soulcast top 100.

Just goes to show that people's tastes are so different.  One person can listen to a song and think it is the greatest, and another person can listen to the same song and think it's the worst, and they are both giving their honest opinions.

If we're defining rock as the harder stuff, that is harder than say Billy Joel or Dusty Springfield, excluding love ballads, I might want to have Sister Christian on my list, with a Springsteen song or two, and I guess some of my favorite Beatle "rockers" would be A Hard Day's Night, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Birthday.  I wouldn't call the classic ballads Hey Jude and Let It Be "rock" exactly, but I used to like them both a lot, and I still like Let It Be, but Hey Jude kind of wore itself out after hearing it the 14 millionth time.  Na na na na......

I'd have to have Hendrix on the list.  Axis Bold As Love, If Six Was Nine, a few others.  And I'd have to have Led Zep's best rocker, Whole Lotta Love.

Artemis: Um...well...I've heard of The Cure :-)
This really is fun, isn't it!
Ifbno7: Okay, I've stretched the definition of "Rock" to include anything that isn't Country or Classical. So anything from Dusty Springfield to 9 Inch Nails is OK with me.
Mamie: You got at least 4 great songs ther!  I didn't know anybody actually liked Elvis Costello! [Actorguy Ducks]  :-)
daily:  Okay, now I really feel old! I agree with Led Zep and Pink Flloyd (of course!) but I'm afraid I've never heard of the rest :-(

    Santana - Black Magic Woman
Gladys Knight & the Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia
America - A Horse with No Name

And just to prove I'm not a total wuss:

Iron Butterfly - Inna Gadda Da Vida

You don't have to be Canadian to be a fan of Rush! My musical tastes range but for me Rush will always be the band. I once heard a DJ say that Rush would be a real cult band if it wasn't for the 20 million fans. :-)
