"WASHINGTON — Chiquita Brands International, the Cincinnati-based company famous for its banana brand, on Monday made the first $5 million installment on a $25 million fine that it's agreed to pay as part of a guilty plea to charges that it supported a right-wing terrorist group in Colombia." source

It's amazing how hypocritical our society can be. Will we hold Chiquita to the same standards to which we hold other terrorist supporters?

I don't think it is appropriate to just fine Chiquita.  I think the decision makers at Chiquita, the very top executives and owners, must be sent to prison for at least 10 years, and I don't mean a prison where they play golf.  Otherwise the punishment is a joke.

holy banana republics, batman--is chiquita publicly traded? b/c if so, they won't be for long!

Ed, I lay odds that the market takes this in stride. Chiquita will be seen as having "paid their debt to society" with this miniscule fine and life will go on unchanged.

you know what would make me happy? if the bush administration started cracking down on chiquita officers for supporting terrorists.

I'm waiting to see of the wingnuts demand that we bomb chiquita's facilities. I'm waiting to see if they believe that chiquita is evil. I'm waiting to see if they understand that their black and white ideology is nonsensical  :/

Yes it was. I think, though, that it would be unwise to hold one's breath for the wingnuts to see the inherent hypocrisy of failing to adequately punish the decision makers in the Chiquita case or until they see that their black-and-white position on terrorism is ultimately foolish.

You remember that TV commercial that says, "If you buy drugs, you support terrorism"?

Turns out it was all bananas...

Chiquita banana lady hides grenades in that hat.
